25.01.2022 On 20 August 1890, the Carrington Centennial Hospital for Convalescents and Incurables was opened. It was the first of its kind to be built in NSW, and its Grasmere location was praised for its lovely view and balmy health giving air. The 89-bed hospital was designed in the Late Victorian Queen Anne Revival style, and was intended to provide respite away from the bustle of the city. 24.01.2022 Many residents would know the name Thomas Donovan. In fact, one of our parks is named in his honour. He donated land to the Marist Brothers in the 1920s, which then became St Gregory’s College Farm. In so doing, he gave thousands of young men career opportunities on the land. Her marriage to Keith Whiteman represented the union of two of Camdens prominent families; the Whitemans were retailers and the McIntoshes were dairy farmers at Denbigh, Cobbitty. 10.01.2022 This month we mark 225 years since the naming of the 'Cow Pasture Plains', an historic event that shaped the early colony of New South Wales and led to the discovery of our local area. After their arrival in Farm Cove, four cows and two bulls disappeared. Some seven years later, in 1795, word got back to Governor Hunter that an Aboriginal had told a convict hunter about the whereabouts of the runaway cattle. Governor Hunter sent a group led by an old seafarer, Henry Hacking..., to verify the story. He was so impressed by their recounts that he set out to see the land and the cattle himself, arriving in November 1795 in the Camden region to the sight of more than forty cattle.
