14.01.2022 A foals' perspective.... what right do Victorian Parks have to wipe out the entire population of Alpine Brumbies.. The numbers presented are so much less now af...ter the fires raged through taking many horses due to the veracity and speed. (I have just finished crying... and now this.. WARNING..YOU WILL NEED TISSUES OR A HANDKERCHIEF) (Thanks Angel Jade Tanner) <3 U CUZ... "The first snow has fallen, my mother moves us down into the warmer valleys, the grass crisp and heavy with morning dew. The sun creeps above my beloved mountains, its warm glow glorious. The leaves that fell threw autumn crunch under hoof. The grass is sweet and we stretch out soaking up the warm rays of sun. We explore, we hear the frogs by the creek and chase butteries in the fields, echidna pricked my nose as I followed her too closely. At the foot of the valley the ground has been flattened, salt laid out. We lick and taste the enriched minerals, vitamins for our bodies to endure the coming winter, we go there daily, today is different. Steel panels surround the salt pad, cautiously we enter, for we now crave the salt and minerals, they're addictive to us equine mob. I push my way in with the other youngsters for my fill. A sound rings out, and panic sets in. We are trapped. I call and call for my mother. The larger horses blind with panic step on us little ones, they bash their bodies into the steel trying to escape. Manoo a mare tries to jump, she is down, broken leg, I hear her scream in pain. The sound echoes for a second before creating even more panic. My mother, outside the trap is calling me to follow her as she sprints away. She pauses and calls to me again. I cannot follow. I see her retreat to the treeline, still calling to me. I try to squeeze my tiny body through the rails, big horse my father pushes behind me, my leg, neck and shoulder through, he pushes more, I'm stuck, I'm squealing. I cant fit through and can't go back. As darkness falls the herd huddle tight together in the middle of the trap, I'm cold, I'm stuck, my voice lost from calling my mother, my legs numb and blood trickles from my nose. The cold night comes and goes. Three dead in the trap with me and I'm barely breathing. New noise. Rattling, clanking, motors humming... the men have come. Panic starts again as they surround the steel trap. They're so close. Hooves thrashing, bodies trampled, my rump keeps getting hit every time the big horse my father rushes past, one bumps me through, I'm free and I fall to the ground, I try to regain my legs but the lack of blood flow makes every attempt sting beyond belief. I try to run, I try to call for mother, to tell her I'm coming. The men laugh at me falling down, laugh at me in pain.... then a noise rings out, so deafeningly loud, a thump in my chest, I hit the ground, my ears ring still with the noise and I taste my own blood. My little legs running for all their might, every ounce of fight I have left... but I'm grounded. Breathing hurts and blood gurgles with each attempt. My small hooves have worn tracks into the ground where my body lays. I hear the loud bang again and again and again and again, it echoes over my mountain, through the trees I call home. I lift my head one last time, I see my herd. Dead, in the steel trap that held us. Some are still, some are struggling... a man comes to me now, still I try to run, I try to get away but my legs don't work, I try to call mother and blood pours from my mouth, the man raises the silver tube to my head..... he looks in my eyes... and pulls the trigger." WE HAVE FIVE DAYS TO MAKE A LAST DITCH EFFORT TO SAVE OUR HERITAGE HORSES!
