20.01.2022 Today we respectfully mark the 142nd anniversary of the deaths of the three Policeman killed at Stringybark Creek, near Mansfield. On the 26th of October, 1878, Sergeant Michael Kennedy, Constable Thomas Lonigan and Constable Michael Scanlan were killed by what would then become known as ‘The Kelly Gang’. Ned & Dan Kelly, Joe Byrne & Steve Hart. ... As the world knows, this event ultimately led to the Glenrowan Siege. Ned would be be tried and hanged for the murder of Constable Lonigan. The three police officers all migrated to Australia from Ireland. Sergeant Kennedy was a father to five young children. Constable Thomas Lonigan was a father to four young children. Constable Michael Scanlan had no family in Australia at the time of his death. He did have a beloved retriever that he gave to a friend should he not return. These three men gave their lives in the service of their duty. Our thoughts and prayers are with their descendants. Today is a day to remember the loss suffered by the families of those men It is not a time to debate the rights or wrongs, the loss of a family member is tragic, even more so when it is at another’s hands. There is no time for goodbye. The loss is felt for generations. We also remember Constable Thomas McIntyre, the only survivor, whose family also suffered. All of the families across the whole story are united in their respect for the loss and grief felt. #respect #remember

18.01.2022 This year we are unable to celebrate ANZAC Day the way usually would. We cannot attend either the Dawn Service or the March in local towns. What we can do is participate in the Driveway at Dawn Service, which I know a lot of you plan to do. You can also participate here, on this page. ... In 2015 we brought to completion a four year project to commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC. We created ‘The Gathering Place’, with a memorial wall, rock and plaque. We recreated the districts los Honour Boards. We opened the final stage and dedicated the wall and Board on 15 October 2020. 56 names appear on the Honour Board- all with a direct connection to the Greta Hansonville district. The men saw active service through all the major Campaigns and across all Battlefields. They distinguished themselves, with many earning commendations and awards. Thirteen men paid the Supreme Sacrifice and they lie forever in Australia, Egypt, Turkey, France and Belgium. I have visited nearly all and managed to place a poppy on their grave. Please feel free to share your family member here, whether they be from Greta or not. Tell us about them. I am still gathering information and will put it into a publication. If you’ve never spoken to me about your family member I’d love to hear from you. If you haven’t seen our webpage... follow this link. There’s plenty more to be added. http://www.gretaheritagegroup.com.au/anzac/ Noeleen Lloyd

14.01.2022 Our good friend and supporter Aidan Phelan has just released his debut novel. GLENROWAN- A novel, is historic fiction and weaves the true, known facts of the days and events before the Glenrowan Siege skilfully with an interpretation of ‘what might have been’. The Kelly Story is layered and complex. ... Aidan has given voice not just to Ned and Dan Kelly, Joe Byrne and Steve Hart - but all those who came into contact with them during those fateful weeks before, and the hours during the Siege. This is not a romanticism of characters- everyone is shown with the flaws of the real people they were. The hopes, dreams and fears. The bad decisions. The consequences. It’s does not demonise either. We get a glimpse of why someone does bad things, yet can still be a loved family member. That they can be grieved. Aidan makes no excuses for any behaviour in this novel. It’s exactly what it says, a novel. However, Aidan has written a piece of work that weaves known events from factual accounts, seamlessly with imagined conversations and ‘Windows’. Windows that allow the reader to imagine that the conversations, emotions and actions could have happened. To hear fear, anger, uncertainty. Love. Regret. Do we actually know? Not totally. But this novel allows us to imagine that it could have been so. It’s a great read. To purchase a copy please see the details below. Aidan Phelan, Glenrowan - a novel A Guide to Australian Bushranging
13.01.2022 On this day, the anniversary of Armistice, we remember the 56 men of the Greta Hansonville district who enlisted for WW1. One, Jack Jeffrey, would die in training before he could be sent overseas. Fourteen others would make the Supreme Sacrifice in active duty, and their bodies lie forever in Egypt, Turkey, and France. ... Many would be wounded in body and spirit. We remember all of their sacrifice. We remember the men and women from all other conflicts after WW1. Lest We Forget

07.01.2022 In a major boost for tourism, and as a result of the Ned Kelly Alive Study, Glenrowan is to receive $4 million to enable a major upgrade to amenities and surrounding areas. Excitingly it will enable the development of a viewing tower and siege site experience. Full details are yet to be released, but this confirms huge interest in the Kelly story, and coupled with the announcement earlier this week of $1million for the Beechworth courthouse this is an enormous achievement ...for the North East. Glenrowan is about to get the injection of funds it needs to develop a world class and up to date experience. One that will benefit the town and the region. We are excited for them, and can’t wait to see what happens next. Congratulations to everybody who worked on the submission.
