23.01.2022 It's with heavy hearts that we share the news below Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and there family at this time.

23.01.2022 Are you or someone you know interested in learning a new skill, getting outside in the summer sun and earning some money along the way? We are running introduct...ory gridiron officials courses across the latter part of September and into October that will certify attendees as Level 0 community officials. The theory component of the course will be delivered online in a short Zoom session after which we will be visiting each region to deliver the on-field practical component. The relevant dates are below: Online component - any one of 28, 29 or 30 September (evening) Hobart practical - Sunday 4 October Burnie practical - Saturday 10 October Devonport practical - Sunday 11 October Launceston practical - Thursday (evening) 15 October Gridiron officiating is a paid position and is open to anyone high-school age or older. A knowledge of gridiron is desirable but certainly not essential as we will introduce you to all the aspects of the sport as we go along. Games are held across all three regions of the state however if you do not wish to travel outside your own region and would prefer to officiate only local games then that's no problem at all. If you think this is for you, or you think you know someone who might be interested then please don't hesitate to send us a message here or shoot us an email at [email protected] Gridiron Tasmania TASkeno Knights Gridiron Club University Devils - American Football Club Wiseguise Northwest Raiders Gridiron Club Sporties Gorillas Gridiron Club

23.01.2022 The Sportie's Gorillas Gridiron Club would like to congratulate and welcome Matt "MC" Cameron as Head Coach for the 2020/21 campaign. MC began his gridiron career at 16 years old with the Launceston Eagles in the 'old league'. When the Eagles folded he moved to the Glenorchy Raiders. The he relocated to WA where he played for the Claremont Jets, winning a championship in 2000. When returning to a Tasmania with no gridiron, he set about developing a new league. He was the foun...ding member of the Gridiron Tasmania that we play in today, and a life member in recognition. MC has been a Gorillas club leader as Head Coach, Team Captain and all round font of knowledge and inspiration for the players. MC leads by example as running back, full back, and has played just about all positions including QB & MLB. And lastly, MC has been part of two Tigerbowl winning campaigns in the past 6 years, and will endeavor to make that three out of 7! 18.01.2022 A short Hudl recap of the Gorillas last game of 2020, vs the UTAS Devils. Once again the Gorillas took to the field missing critical players, and had re-shuffled the remaining players on both Offense and Defense. QB Tyler James had his first start, but with an Offense developed for other QB's! His day was going to be a tough one, and he showed his character when he stepped up. The Gorillas Defense had an outstanding day, limiting the Devils to only 1 score which was late in t...he 3rd quarter. This was an achievement especially considering that the Devils had plenty of time with the ball. Having LB's Nathan Wynder and Jono Tunks back on the squad returned some experience and stability to the D. The Gorillas first possession started poorly from the snaps, which were sometimes sprayed by veteran Pete Winn, recovering from torn ligaments in a finger. And the O'Line were missing starters Jaxson Stone and Payden Davis. Although G and T were admirably filled by Mitchel "Frosty" Frost and Peter Dallow respectively, the O'Line was unsettled against the Devils aggressive 4 man front. In the hands of QB Tyler James, the Gorillas O sustained several strong drives and were within scoring range a few times. The O showed moments of brilliance once again, but small mistakes at critical times pulled them up short from a score. Several 3rd down, and even 4th down conversions were not completed. The gusting cross wind made the air game difficult, and the run game was reduced to 3.6 yards per attempt. Once again, the Gorillas can be complimented on the game in so many ways, regardless of the score. They remain on the precipice of pulling together a strong 2020/21 season. The entire Gorillas family would like to wish everyone a safe, fun and merry Christmas and New Year! See you in 2021. 17.01.2022 Receivers and their opposite number, the Cornerback, need to be light, fast and agile. Receivers obviously need to be able to catch, and Cornerbacks to prevent. Both need to fight for the ball like there's 10 sec left in the Superbowl. The battle out wide and deep is one of strategy, timing and perfect route running - not just speed. And the team needs to trust you to catch a pass while running full tilt and looking over your shoulder - every time! The pressure is on, but the...n glory could be at the end of each reception. All of this will be taught at training. (And don't tell the receivers, but it is only by the effort of the Offensive Line that they have any chance of looking good!) August pre-season training; Sun Aug 16th, 23rd & 30th 2pm - 4pm @ Royal Park, Launceston No experience necessary - just bring boots and water

16.01.2022 Gridiron Tasmania is wanting your help to name the a state team. We here at the gorillas are excited by the news that Tasmania will finally have a state team to compete in the Australian Gridiron League. If you love the sport as much as we do you should get behind this. You never know it may be your design that wins.

16.01.2022 Linebackers prowl the field as the 2nd line of defense. They need to be a mix of body types and skills as the job is varied. Middle Linebackers (MLB) are traditional run-stuffers who will drive their shoulder into the hips of a 150kg rampaging fullback in a head-on collision, giving an on-field example of several of Einstein’s theories in physics. The Outside Linebackers (OLB) need to be quick thinking and fast on their feet they may need to chase down a receiver or support... inside in a gang tackle that the Gorillas are famous for. Linebackers more than most need to have heart and trust in their teammates. Heart will drive them into the middle of the battle, and trust that they will be supported by 10 other players. Short and stocky, or tall and lean if you have heart you can be a Linebacker. All of these skills will be taught at training; August pre-season training Sun Aug 16th, 23rd and 30th 2pm 4pm @ Royal Park, Launceston

15.01.2022 A Safety is another member of the defensive secondary in gridiron. Safety's are the last line of defense with the goal line at their back. They have to watch everyone who can advance the ball - so there are 6 offensive players in their sights! On the plus side, Safety's have time to line up an open field tackle, or close in on an interception! A good Safety has to be a smart athlete, making decisions and committing to action. A great Safety can change the way an opposition ca...n play! Training September & October Wednesday night 6.30pm - 8.30pm Royal Park, Launceston All new players welcome. Any and All body types, heights, weight and fitness levels are encouraged to train. Come along and learn the skills and gain the fitness you need to play. And remember - we love our big boys. If you weigh in at 120+kg, don't think about it, just come along. Covid-safe event. Bring your own water bottle. Sanitiser etc provided.

15.01.2022 Wanna get to know more about our Football code. Join this group.

14.01.2022 Not many of us were going for the Bucs but see if you can guess who is? Thanks to Sporties Hotel for putting on a great morning of burgers, wings and beers. And a reminder - there’s plenty of space on the deck and in the beer garden at Sporties!

13.01.2022 The Tight End is a bigger receiver on the Offensive team. Generally considered to be a short yardage possession type receiver, is still able to be a team game changer. Think of Rob Gronkowski and you get the picture, but players like Jason Witten are less famous but still critical players. Tight Ends need to be big enough to block a Defensive Lineman, agile enough to take out a Linebacker, tall enough to catch a pass over the middle and tough enough to take a hit. If you are ...an AFL Centre Half-Forward looking for an off-season sport, come and try gridiron. Tight End will be a challenge for you! Registered Covid-safe event. Bring your own water bottle. Sanitiser etc provided.

12.01.2022 A Cornerback is a member of the defensive secondary in gridiron. Cornerbacks cover Wide Receivers most of the time, but also blitz and defend against any offensive running plays that come their way. They disrupt the opposing offense and create turnovers through hard tackles, interceptions, and batting down passes. Cornerback favorite phrases; From the Ref - "Incomplete" From the D Captain - "Corner Blitz"!... From the Stat Sheet - "Pick 6" Training September & October Wednesday night 6.30pm - 8.30pm Royal Park, Launceston All new players welcome.

11.01.2022 When a team absolutely needs a 3 yard gain, the team turns to the Fullback (FB)! Normally heavier and maybe slower than a Running Back (RB), it takes a couple of committed defenders to stop him. Then he muscles another yard. Then falls forward for another! A Fullback fights for every inch, every time. A Fullback will also need to lead block for a RB, running through a gap and taking on the 1st defender he sees. His job is to put that defender on his back, then look for a 2nd!... And the best Fullbacks will be able to fake a run, then turn to receive a pass! A Fullback will have dreams of an open field run against a ‘skinny’, a Cornerback, whom he will destroy on his way to the endzone. All of these skills will be taught at training; August pre-season training Sun Aug 16th, 23rd and 30th 2pm 4pm @ Royal Park, Launceston (Training continues in September, season starts November)

10.01.2022 Running backs (RB) need to be versatile, and fast. The most common job will be to receive a handoff from the Quarterback (QB) and run through a hole made by the Offensive Line (OL). You will have to run at the back of a big boy and trust that a gap, what we call ‘daylight’, will appear at just the right time. You will be running as part of a strategy, but as we all know, the best strategy only survives until the snap the best RB’s can react and make something out of nothing... when that gap closes early! Running backs also have to run receiving routes, going out wide or on fake runs, then turning and receiving a pass. Or you may need to ‘stay at home’ to protect the QB from Linebackers. Any way the job goes, it is a very physical position either being tackled, initiating a hit or making a block. If you love a physical contest, welcome to the offensive backfield! All of these skills will be taught at training; August pre-season training Sun Aug 16th (tomorrow), 23rd and 30th 2pm 4pm @ Royal Park, Launceston (Training continues in September, season starts November)

10.01.2022 The Quarterback is the person who distributes the ball by either passing to a receiver or handing off to a running player. He is the General of the Offensive team. He has the toughest mental job on the field, having to look at the defense and decide which of his available options will work the best. He has to be able to ‘read’ the defense the depth and/or leverage of the individual defenders, the attitude of linebackers, where is the grass, look for a blitz or deep coverage.... The QB usually takes credit for wins, and is assigned blame for the losses. But it is a little known fact that the QB is at the mercy of his team mates! If the Center does not snap the ball properly, or if his Offensive Line lets the defense through, or if his Receivers run poor routes, then there’s not much the QB can do. Gridiron is the truest of team sports where every single player and Coach needs to work in unison to get the job done. There is no player who can take it easy, and no player that can carry a team alone. But the best of QB’s can pull that team together, calm them down and set them to work. The QB will know his teams strengths and weaknesses, work his magic, and pull apart a defense no matter what they do. All of these skills will be taught at training; August pre-season training Sun Aug 16th, 23rd and 30th 2pm 4pm @ Royal Park, Launceston No experience necessary - just bring boots and water!

09.01.2022 The official GT roster for this season. Our home field is Royal Park, Knights at the showgrounds main oval, the Devils return to UTAS for the rest of the season, and the Raiders are at Burnie Sports Centre.

08.01.2022 And the Gorillas travel to Tigerbowl VII next Saturday

05.01.2022 The Offensive Line is the most important player group on the gridiron field. The Center has control of the ball and gets it to the Quarterback, then the 5 man team either protects the Quarterback or makes a hole for the Running back to carry the ball upfield. These Offensive Linemen (OL) need to be big boys with explosive power. The OL does not need to run very far, but does need to have fitness and endurance to go with the power and sheer weight. You will get the required fi...tness and skills at training. Against the OL is the Defensive Linemen! The DL are usually a little lighter and faster than the OL, and they need to be able to either get to the Quarterback or get hold of the running back coming past them. The OL vs DL battle is fought hard each and every snap of the ball and is it's own battle within a battle. It is up close and personal and you will develop an incredible camaraderie with your own team mates, and the opposition! There are many sport in Australia, but only gridiron properly appreciates the big bloke! Pre-season training: Sun August 16th, 23rd & 30th 2pm - 4pm, Royal Park, Launceston All are welcome - no experience, no fitness level required. Bring boots and a water bottle!

02.01.2022 Round 03 - Dec 5th 2020 Once again a depleted Sporties Gorillas unit hit the road, this time North West to take on the Wiseguise Raiders. Neither team had yet secured a win for this season, and both teams were determined to overcome. The Gorillas lost the toss and the Raiders elected to have the ball first, and seemed ready to overwhelm the Gorillas D as they sorted new players into the D systems. Aaron de Bear was tasked with organising the D without crucial LB's Nate Wynder...Continue reading

02.01.2022 Below is a lighthearted take on the NFL as we Gorillas approach our do-or-die weekend. On Sunday 14th at 2.00pm at Royal Park in Launceston, our home ground, we take on the Northwest Raiders. The winning team moves on to the elimination final against the UTAS Devils, and the loser gets to watch. Your home team have struck Offensive form in recent weeks, culminating in a solid win over the minor premiers, the Taskeno Knights, until then undefeated this season. With experience...d triple threat Taz Little at the helm, the Gorillas were settled and the O systems started working with consistency. The Gorillas Defense continues to excel, and continues to improve. There has been no resting on laurels for these boys - training has been intense and intelligent, and the improvement in technique and execution is great to see. We are looking forward to playing the game, and hope to see you all there to watch. https://youtu.be/GxdaYxunZXg
