23.01.2022 All of us at Griffin are shocked and saddened to hear the news that writer and director Aidan Fennessy has passed away. A writer of national and international renown, Aidan's remarkable playssuch as 'Chilling and Killing My Annabel Lee', 'National Interest', and 'The Architect'included 'The House on the Lake', which was part of our 2015 season. He also won the Griffin Award in 2010 for his play 'Brutopia'. Artistic Director, Declan Greene, said: "The loss of Aidan will be d...eeply felt by artists and audiences across Australia. He was a master craftsman of words and images. But he was also a truly kind person, which you can feel when you watch his plays. His keen political mind was always paired with a compassion for people in all their frailty and magnificence. Our thoughts are with Aidan's family, and to all of those in theatre who have been blessed with his friendship over the course of an exceptional career." See more

23.01.2022 Check out this fabulous playwriting initiative! On Wednesday 30 September, at 7:30pm, the fourth and final volume of Critical Stages Touring’s COME TO WHERE I AM AUSTRALIA will launch with a livestream premiere event on Facebook. The program, in partnership with the UK’s Paines Plough, commissioned 16 writers from around the country to craft all-new stories inspired by the places we call home. Volume Four is the last in a series of new works created by the exciting playwrit...ing and performance program that has seen thousands of Australians tune in via social media, YouTube and the Critical Stages Screening Room to experience stories of connection, belonging, and community. Filmed by playwrights Merlynn Tong, Mary Anne Butler, Ian Michael and Ross Mueller, in the place they are writing about, this is a uniquely entertaining way to travel across Australia at a time when so many of us can’t. 'Dogged' has been in development for almost a decade, and Andrea and Catherine used their friendship and their individual creative voices to create a piece of mythic proportions about dingoes, bounties, and the cold, endless bush of Gunaikurnai countr...y, Victoria's alpine region. 09.01.2022 This #50YearsFriday we’re celebrating ‘The Falls’ by Hilary Bell, a cracking Victorian melodrama, ghost tale, and love story full of curious and captivating characters that played at the Stables in 2000. In a bit of a family affair, Hilary's sister Lucy Bell performed in the play, and their father, John Bell, directed it! John said: ’The Falls’ is deliberately crafted in the form of a melodramaa genre that can be richly rewarding when played with utter sincerity... The pla...y is so full of secrets, lies and coverups that it was fascinating for the cast and me to spend the rehearsal time digging into all that subtext to decide what it was that drove these people to make such bizarre decisions... As for the comedy, it plays itself, and doesn’t need to be pushed by the actors. Hilary remembers the tiny dressing room, intimate enough for two actors but in the case of ‘The Falls’, we squeezed into it a cast of six, three of them in crinolines and one in a bath-chair. Oh, and also a musician with an accordion. In fact, space was so limited that Barry Otto was forced to put on his makeup and costume in the toilet. The original production at the Stables was directed by John Bell, and featured an all-star Aussie cast of Lucy Bell, Peter Cousens, Jennifer Hagan, Angus King, Barry Otto, Jacki Weaver. Did you see 'The Falls'? Do you have your own memories to share of this larger-than-life melodrama? Let us know in the comments! 50 YEARS OF THE STABLES Learn more: http://bit.ly/50YearsoftheStables #50YearsoftheStables

09.01.2022 A huge thank you to everyone who came out for our 50 Years of the Stables play reading of ‘The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table’ by Wesley Enoch last Sunday, and to the wonderful cast who brought this powerful script to life: Marlene Cummins, Wesley Patten, Angeline Penrith, and Guy Simon. A big thanks to director Shari Sebbens, our curator and host John McCallum, and none other than Wesley Enoch himself, who generously shared his thoughts in the Q&A. While we weren’t ...in the Stables Theatre itself, we still had the privilege of sharing this powerful Australian story on Gadigal country at the Seymour Centre. Showcasing some incredible 80s style, this excerpt from the ABC TV program 'Review' in 1989 centres around the historic 'D Week' development program that gave us a range of iconic Stables plays, including Gordon Graham’s legendary 'The Boys'. 04.01.2022 "It’s kind of been a bit unprecedented obviously that’s the word everyone’s using, but it’s weirdly set a new precedent, in the fact that as a designer you’re meant to be present in the process of rehearsal, but obviously, this process has been quite different." 03.01.2022 Today marks 191 days since we last had a live audience watch a Griffin productionbut tonight, this will all change as we welcome our first group of theatre lovers into the Seymour Centre to watch the first preview of Mark Rogers's 'Superheroes'. 02.01.2022 Happy #50YearsFriday, and a huge chookas to the cast and crew of 'Wicked Sisters' by Alma De Groen, which begins previews TONIGHT! In the meantime, check out these fantastic photos of the legendary street party supplied by our neighbour Diane Powell. As you heard in our recent podcast episode, the Stables Theatre was put up for sale in 1985 and Griffin Theatre Company was at risk of losing its stage to hungry Sydney developers. The passionate team of Griffs made a lot of nois...e in the media and around town, including holding a beach party on Nimrod Street in a campaign to 'Save the Stables'. Dr Rodney Seaborn read about the plight of the theatremakers, including that of influential stage and screen star and Griffin founding member Penny Cook. Dr Seaborn approached Griffin, saying, I’d like to buy the theatre. It goes to show what can be achieved with a little help from a community of theatremakers, tightrope-walkers, local supporters and generous philanthropists. Thanks to the The Seaborn, Broughton & Walford Foundation, the SBW Stables Theatre remains the home of new Australian writing to this day. And our bar is named in memory of the wonderful Penny Cook. Were you at the street party in 1985? We'd love to hear your memories in the comments! #50YearsFriday #50YearsOfTheStables

01.01.2022 The reviews are in for 'Wicked Sisters' and they're full of praise for Alma De Groen's knife-sharp concepts as well as the four incisive performances by the play's wonderful cast. Here's just a few of our favourites: "It's these touches that make the play so taut... The ideas are just slipped in among the gossip, jocularity, cattiness and confessions, like spiking already strong drinks." John Shand, The Sydney Morning Herald "Alma de Groen’s 'Wicked Sisters' is, more accurate...ly, a play of big ideas: the fraying of the social contract; the singular economic plight of older, single women; the docile acceptance of social Darwinism as a governing principle." Jason Blake, Audrey Journal "This modern, subtle and knotted production of Alma de Groen’s 2002 play is both comic in observation of the way friends are with friends and irrational, biting and hurtful, in the way we can be with friends when wounded." Judith Greenaway, Reviews by Judith - and Friends If you like your plays tackling ideas of substance in a way that is supremely entertaining, then 'Wicked Sisters' is for you. Tickets are selling quickly, but there are still handfuls available on our website!
