18.01.2022 UPDATE: Thankyou for your support and concern. The damage is almost repaired and the lights will be operational again on Thursday night. Sorry for any inconvenience, but we must make sure everything is safe and secure for when you go to enjoy the lights. CCTV cameras are being installed and extra security has been arranged. THE VANDALS WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS ... Griffith Mayor, Councillor John Dal Broi has today expressed his disappointment as two of the City’s Christmas attractions are switched off. Sometime after 11.30pm last night, vandals severely damaged the two electricity boxes which operate the bauble and archway in Memorial Park, this was not only an extremely dangerous act, but has resulted in the closure of these two popular attractions, said Councillor Dal Broi. To say we are disappointed is a gross understatement Council invested heavily in time and money to be able to provide Christmas cheer for this community, and it has taken less than a week for vandals to ruin it for everyone else. Until electricians can attend the site and repair the electricity boxes, we have to keep the arch and bauble switched off to ensure public safety, he added. Council will be installing CCTV cameras in Memorial Park due to the ongoing issues with vandalism. Following the Glow2680 launch last week, the archway was damaged with lights broken. Later that evening, a group of teens took it upon themselves to attempt to push over the bauble thankfully a staff member was present to stop this from occurring, said Councillor Dal Broi. We didn’t believe it was necessary to install CCTV to protect the City’s decorations, however following these incidences it is clear that we need to take steps to protect community property. Council is working to repair the damage to the electrical boxes, however it is unknown how long the decorations will be out of commission. If you have any information relating to the vandalism, please contact the Police on 6969 4299 or Council on 1300 176 077. Council has a policy in place (GC-CP-314) which is there to encourage the public to play a role in safeguarding the assets of the community. Under this policy, Council will pay a reward of up to $2,000 to members of the public for information resulting in the conviction against persons damaging Council property information received will be treated confidentially.

13.01.2022 PATERSON'S CURSE PREVALENT THIS SPRING The Griffith area has seen an explosion of purple this spring as Paterson’s Curse makes a return to the region. Griffith City Council’s Biosecurity Weeds Officer, Peter McGrath said, there are a number of reasons for the increase.... Primarily, we have been coming out of drought that has left plant ground cover depleted and plant competition with weeds reduced. This has provided opportunity for Paterson’s Curse, also known as 'Riverina Bluebell', to make a come-back and ‘curse’ us yet again, he said. In previous years there has been success with biological control agents working to help eradicate the weed. These are insects that consume the Paterson’s Curse and have been responsible for successful Paterson’s curse control over the last decade or so. Another reason we are seeing more Paterson’s Curse this year is also because of drought conditions, depleting the biological control agents and now good rain is germinating seed store that has been in the seed bank for many years. Many Riverina council areas have been affected by Paterson’s Curse this season, including Griffith, Narrandera, Leeton, Coolamon, Junee, Temora, Snowy Valleys, Hilltops, Murrumbidgee, Bland, Lockhart, Hay, Carrathool, Wagga and Cootamundra Gundagai. Land managers can contact Council’s Biosecurity Weed Officer on 1300 176 077 or agricultural resellers for specific chemical details and information on where to access pest plants biocontrol. 13.01.2022 Several projects are underway across Griffith, making 2020/21 a busy time for Griffith City Council. Griffith Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre - 50m Pool The 50m pool construction is on schedule with the formwork and reo being installed for the tiered seating, north and south concourses. Concreting is to take place this week, including the third step to the tiered seating and two sections of the south concourse, the two sections of the east concourse and the two re...maining south concourse sections and the last tiered seating step. Sunday will see the closure of the entire complex as contractors will be installing the main switchboard and gas meter change over. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Westend Stadium The design phase for the Stadium is nearing completion and the DA has been lodged. Council has completed the Expression of Interest process to identify a suitable pool of construction contractors who were invited to tender, with tenders opening earlier this month. Tenderers will be presented to Council in December/January 2021 and a contractor appointed, with construction expected to commence early 2021. It is anticipated the facility will be completed by the end of 2021. Yambil Street Upgrade Stage 3 of the Yambil Street redevelopment is now underway in Griffith with B&C Plumbing being the successful Tenderer for Stages 3 and 4. As part of the Stage 3 works, Yambil Street between Ulong Street and Daines Street will be closed from Tuesday 1 December 2020 until September 2021. The northern side of Yambil Street (Cater & Blumer side) will be upgraded first and the southern side will be open for traffic for the first half of the upgrade. Community Centre The construction of the new Community Centre is fully funded with the NSW Government funding $3.65M and Griffith City Council and Country Universities Centre - Western Riverina each contributing $440K, following years of lobbying by Griffith City Council and Griffith Community Centre Inc. Contractors are on-site installing storm water and plumbing works in the building pad before constructing the slab. It is anticipated that the project will be finalised by the end of July 2021, ready for occupation.

10.01.2022 It’s been one of the best harvests in years and that means once dormant rail lines in our region are now being used to move grain both day and night. For your safety and the safety of others comply with signs and signals at level crossings. Do not approach rail crossings with complacency. Always stop, look and listen for trains and only cross the line when safe to do so.
