19.01.2022 These otherworldly floral images are a result of Ultraviolet-Induced Visible Fluorescence (UVIVF); a type of photography where wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation are absorbed by a material’s molecules to cause substances to fluoresce. The process used means that all of the light in the photograph is radiating from the subject itself. Take a moment out of your Friday to marvel at these plant photographs featured in National Geographic.
17.01.2022 No, it's not a giant asparagus, but the Giant Spear Lily (Doryanthes palmeri)! This large native plant from Northern NSW and SEQ grows on campus at Griffith. Once pollinated by honeyeaters their flower head, which is several meters in length, forms massive seed pots. When Mike the Head Gardener on Gold Coast campus trimmed some recently, the School of Environment and Science thought it was a great chance to get in some weights work
17.01.2022 Have you ever heard of a bioblitz? Do you know what a Cascade Tree-frog looks like? Join Dr Clare Morrison in this episode of Back from the Brink and learn how vital citizen science can be in collecting data that could help save animals from extinction. The tiny Cascade Tree-frog is one such animal. #BiodiversityMonth
14.01.2022 Researchers at the Environmental Futures Research Institute at Griffith University, Alexander Braczkowski and Dr Duan Biggs, have co-authored a piece in Africa Geographic about the importance of having accurate counts of lions for their conservation. Some methods currently used can present inaccurate numbers.
14.01.2022 Baby (carpet) shark doo doo doo doo doo doo Lizzy shared this photo of her assisting in a research project on the effect of thermal stress on bioelectric field in neonatal grey carpet sharks last year. Many species of sharks, such as hammerheads, use bioelectric fields to hunt prey and to sense when a predator is close by. The research was investigating how sharks are being effected by a warming ocean and ocean acidification caused by climate change.... @lizzycapp Have a cool uni photo to share?
