Glue ear, also known as Otitis Media, is caused when fluid builds up in the middle ear cavity and becomes infected. Older children will complain of pain such as an earache, headache or sometimes neck pain when infected. Children who are too young to express themselves verbally might cry a lot, pull or rub their ears, or have issues sleeping. A recent study found that 1 in 4 Indigenous children experience otitis media, and the infection is more likely to become chronic and detrimental to their hearing, which can impact the child's learning and language development. If your child shows any of these signs, or tells you they are in pain, it's important to visit your GP as soon as possible. The shorter the period between diagnosis and treatment the better.
