25.01.2022 Inspiration is everywhere, Age is not a barrier to learning karate.

25.01.2022 Whilst I am off training and teaching due to injury, until February 2020. It has given me time to consider the many aspects of what it means to be a karateka(One who practiced karate). 48 years ago I started karate not only for fitness and self defence but because there was something that draw me to a deeper aspects of commitment and endeavour. Karate teaches you to understand yourself, recognise your limits whilst striving to improve and increase knowledge.... A great master, once told me that there is no place for ego in karate. Only the desire to learn and share. For that I will always remember him. Thank you! I have been fortunate to have trained with many great teachers. I have experienced training in both Australia and overseas. Life experiences are both positive and negative. These are learning tools. Take note of these and learn to apply the best of them in your training and understanding. At my stage of life, I have no desire to be the best or the fastest. My desire is to train for a greater understanding and to past on what I know to others. Be willing to be open to new ideas and approaches. A karateka will always have, deep in their spirit, the desire to train no matter what age or physical condition. They will always find a way to be involved in training. Don’t leave your enthusiasm to a part of your history that you will always look back on. Get involved, no matter how much you can train or commit to. Your understanding and knowledge is an example to younger , newer karateka. Being a karateka, once experienced correctly is for life! This is my option only, though it is true for me. Thank you for reading this. OOSS Sensei Wayne

24.01.2022 Note to parents with regard to having children learn Karate. Learning Karate Techniques Part 1 By Krassimir Doynov, Ph.D., Karate-Do Club & Kobudo at University of Houston Introduction... The purpose of this article is to show that learning karate techniques is no different than learning any subject at school or any skill in life. It requires effort, attention, persistence, discipline and organization. Learning karate techniques is based on the human brain functions of receiving through our senses, remembering, analyzing, outputting and controlling. Analogy with children learning to tie their shoelaces This process can be illustrated by the analogy of children learning to tie their shoelaces. In the beginning a kindergarten child just observes how its parents do that. The child forms a visual memory of the process. The visual memory generates a sense of comfort, which in turn encourages the child to experiment on its own. With help from its parents and after several attempts the child succeeds eventually in tying its shoelaces. From this moment on, the visual memory becomes linked to the particular hand skills necessary for the desired output. This linkage forms a thought pattern in the brain, which allows the child to see the big picture and to get a feeling of rhythm for the sequence of elementary actions needed for the completion of this complex process. (Yes, tying shoelaces is a complex process known only to humans among all living creatures in Nature). After several successful outputs the level of familiarity with the process increases along with the level of comfort, which in turn allows the child to analyze the elementary actions and to learn new ones. This analysis leads to performance improvements in all elementary actions. The child becomes more efficient and needs less time to tie its shoelaces. The process still requires full concentration of the mental energy or attention of the child. With practice, the child learns to control the process with less mental energy, which allows the child to redirect its attention somewhere else. After many repetitions, tying shoelaces becomes fully automatic and does not practically require any attention at all. A karate master performs any technique in the same way adults tie their shoelaces - without thinking. A new karate technique is as difficult to a white belt student as tying shoelaces is to the kindergarten child.

18.01.2022 Many a martial artists trains for years to perfect their techniques to apply in kata and kumite. We train to improve balance, posture, speed and correct application which are all physical aspect of karate. But there must also be a mental aspects to training. One is Zanshin a state of awareness, of relaxed alertness, is the focused posture of the body after a technique is executed. Developed in the martial arts through awareness of breathing and body posture. The other is Mush...in your mind is free from thoughts so you totally free to act and react towards an opponent without hesitation. One observes the attacking techniques in a slower way and responds completely relaxed in body and mind. At this point, a person relies not on what they think should be the next move, but what is their trained natural reaction (or instinct) or what is felt intuitively. The mind could be said to be working at a very high speed, but with no intention or plan. A master once explained to me that Mushin is the state where a person finally understands their techniques and becomes truly free to respond. Once you achieve this, you will move to a new level of appreciation of your martial arts training. Sensei Wayne

16.01.2022 GRKKQld supports the efforts of Tribe Social Belonging WHAT IS TRIBE? Tribe Social Belonging provides opportunity through community connections. Tribe promote events and activities whereby lonely and isolated people are provided a safe and welcoming environment where they can reconnect. There is no agenda, just opportunity.... The concept of a community looking after it’s own is hardly new, we just need to re-establish it as the norm. Human beings are social creatures. We have always been and we remain Tribal. Throwing money at a problem, creating short term band aid fixes so as to tick a KPI box are not the answer. We as a community need to step back up and provide each other with support and guidance.

12.01.2022 Grow in your understanding of karate, don't try to climb to high without a strong base. Other wise you will find a weakness in your foundation. Remember not all trees are alike, so grow slowly and take time to mature. Don't be in a rush, grow deep foundations.

10.01.2022 This article was posted on FB today by an experienced instructor and I recommend that all parents and karateka(students)should read it. A few years back I had a prospective student and their parents come into my dojo inquiring about joining up and learning with us. I am always grateful and happy to meet someone who shows an interest in learning the martial arts and we began a good conversation. During the course of the meeting the young boy looked at his parents and said He...Continue reading

08.01.2022 Looking back to the future Whilst recovering from a long term injury, it gives you time to review you're training history of how things were done. When I start everything was focused on improving your skills and fitness. Accepting hard training and injury was just a part of learning. I remember always being amazed by the senior grades and instructors ability. Trying to copy them and master techniques seemed simple (That’s what the books said) but it was so complicated. 03.01.2022 What people say about GRKK I don't know many people in the area who have kids but I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this school to their children. I know the instructor personally and can absolutely vouch for his credibility and integrity as an instructor and to do what is right by his students. Matthew G... Sensie Wayne’s karate clubs were a feature of Moreton Bay since 1980 and many of you would have seen his students demonstrations at school fetes and shopping centres. Some of you even had siblings who trained under him. Erin Van Gameren
