25.01.2022 Ive just returned from a weekend camping at Rollingstone Nth QLD where I stumbled across this beauty - Pedilanthus tithymaloides, a striking euphorbia. The stalks are almost black in this variegated variety, and the leaves tinged with red. And the best thing? Its easy to grow! Love it! Photo courtesy dounika (because I forgot to take one!)

25.01.2022 We all know Social Media now plays an important role in many of our lives. There are irritating aspects of it, but it has also opened up some very useful avenues. In my case the Plant groups on Facebook often offer me beautiful plants at prices far less than you could purchase them from a garden centre. What I love most about purchasing plants this way is that I know they are locally grown to our climate, meaning they are quite likely to survive (always a good thing!) plus I am supporting locals in a pursuit they love. Yesterday I bought 3 x amazing ground orchids off a local hobby gardener super cheap. Less than $20 and these are the gorgeous plants! Have you checked out your local Plant groups on fb? You just might stike gold!

21.01.2022 What does a garden designer do on a rare free day? Bring a design to life of course! "Tree of Life" garden globe, awaiting grout.

21.01.2022 Ive been out working in my garden and just wanted to share my favourite flower which is spectacularly in bloom. It is a Hibiscus "best of times" . This bloom is 16cm in diameter! :-)

21.01.2022 A tropical design need not be complicated. This impressive looking lush section of garden actually only contains 7 main plants. Its the textures and layering that make the design work.

21.01.2022 Absolutely breathtaking

20.01.2022 Many people don't consider an edible garden part of a tropical landscape, however cardamom, ginger, kaffir lime, lemongrass, thai basil, mint, banana, chilli...the list goes on, will all grow with ease in the tropical garden. If you enjoy thai flavours why not give them a go? Check out our friends over at Organic Motion for some great ideas. http://www.homegrownediblegardens.com/wet-season-plants-for

16.01.2022 We have been experiencing the most amazing rain in Townsville over the past 3 weeks. We have transcended from Brownsville to the Emerald Realm. Just remarkable how plants respond to a good soaking from Mother Nature.

16.01.2022 For a stunning fast growing (tall) feature in your tropical garden, Bambusa lako (Timor Black bamboo) is an excellent choice. A clumping bamboo, it will grow to approx 10m tall and have a clump spread of around 2m. It can be cut back to form a smaller, denser clump and also trimmed to a shorter size. Culms (shoots) can reach 10cm diameter in a rich dark brown/black.

15.01.2022 Something I miss living in the tropics are the intense foliage colour changes of autumn. Just gorgeous.

10.01.2022 I posted a blog a few weeks ago about plants that grow where THEY choose. Obviously this for a garden designer can be a bit of a conundrum. I am happy to say that yesterday I was pleasantly surprised (ok, really I was jumping up and down super excited!) when I discovered that the mystery plant that was creeping up my mango stump was in fact a plant that I had been wanting to get my hands on for a long time - Aristolochia acuminata (Native Dutchmans pipe). I havent a clue wh...ere it has come from (I have lived in this house for 4 years and never seen it before), all I know is I have been searching for one (the nurseries are always sold out) and one has appeared out of nowhere, ostentatiously climbing up my mango tree stump! And the best part? The absolutely amazing, larger than life Birdwing butterfly that has been coveting the vine all weekend <3 Unfortunately she was a bit camera shy. See more

10.01.2022 Do you just throw your hands up in despair when you contemplate your garden? In this business things are always interesting, but a couple of upcoming jobs sound particularly so. A steep block backing onto rocky Castle Hill, and a sandy block a few streets back from the beach in windy Palleranda, where the client claims "nothing will grow!" Lucky I love a good challenge! This just might be the inspiration you are looking for. Will keep you posted on my plant choices.

08.01.2022 Claude Monet in his garden 1921. Almost as beautiful in life as in his paintings.

08.01.2022 Every garden should have a place where you can just relax and unwind...

07.01.2022 Check out my latest blog post on toxic plants in your garden http://www.groovygardendesign.com/?p=77

07.01.2022 Its always a good idea to know what toxic plants are lurking in your garden. Interesting that some plants, while extremely toxic to humans, dont affect animals at all, and vice-versa. Gardening Australia have an interesting article I found while researching one of th feature trees in my back yard, the Black Bean tree (Castanospermum australe). http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s3873280.htm

06.01.2022 TODAY ON THE BLOG I focus on the feature plant native to the Caribbean and South America - Mauritius Hemp (Fucraea foetida mediopicta). What a great statement plant this beauty is. Plant in tropical to subtropical regions.

05.01.2022 Adding a "door" or gateway to a new section of the garden leads people through and adds a sense of mystery to what lies behind. This balinese style entryway divides the veggie garden from the rest of the garden.

02.01.2022 Before and after. A difficult corner transformed to allow room for kids play zone. Note no lawn to mow under the trampoline!

02.01.2022 I recently had the absolute privilege of designing the front garden of a grand old Queenslander. She deserved a formal layout to complement her character. The brief was waterwise and low maintenance, with lawn for children to play. There were also views to maintain which meant location and height of planting was an important consideration. All of the chosen plants are drought tolerant and easy care, the turf being Zoysia, an Australian native grass (which I will do a feature on soon) that is able to handle extended periods of dry, or wet, sun and shade. And here is the final design.

01.01.2022 Whilst my post last night celebrated how simple a planting scheme can be and still be pleasing to the eye, as a self confessed avid collector of plants I love to fill spaces with beautiful colours, textures, sizes and smells. In this example of another tropical style garden, note the myriad plants and how they blend so well with each other to create this amazing jungle oasis.
