24.01.2022 How do you know if your tomatoes are getting sufficient water? This year I have planted lettuce at the base of my tomatoes. It makes the pot look nicer, provide...s an additional harvest and also tells me whether my tomatoes are getting sufficient water and nutrition. Lettuce wilts before a tomato, so this trick ensures I am alerted early of the need to water and my tomatoes never dry out. Fluctuating water levels in the root zone and lack of calcium increase the incidence of blossom end rot. See http://www.annettemcfarlane.com/diseaseID.htm See more

23.01.2022 When boungainvillea finish flowering it is time to prune. Some plants drop all their leaves, depending on nutriton, watering and temperatures in your region. Pr...une, fertilze (something suitable for roses or citrus) and water well now for rapid repeat growth and flowering. I avoid composting the prunings as thorns take ages to decompost. There is nothing worse than putting your hand ln compost and discovering boungainvillea thorns. See more

19.01.2022 They are back. i was tidying some citrus today, when I noticed the unmistakable smell of bronze orange bugs. They are at egg and green nymph stage, so a simple ...oil spray will control them through smothering. Apply to all citrus and repeat spray in around six weeks to get the next generation. See more

19.01.2022 Finally, the conversion of the old Dam into the crystal clear, sustainable swimming hole is completed. The waterfalls and wetlands keep the water oxygenated and clean.

18.01.2022 Discovered another weird and wonderful bug in the garden today. In this case they were sucking the sap from the new shoots emerging from the trunk of a eucalypt...us tree. A large female with her adoring males or perhaps a mother and her offspring? They will be gone in a day or two and the tree will survive, so nothing to do but admire them. Sometimes these bugs are grouped generally under the name of stink bugs. You can keep bronze orange stink bugs from sucking sap of your citrus trees by spraying with oil 3-4 times a year. That way you kill all stages in the lifecycle. See more

06.01.2022 If you see a bright splash of red/orange flowers against glossy green foliage, it is likely to be the firewheel tree (Stenocarpus sinuatus). This native is relatively slow growing, but worth the wait to enjoy such glorious blooms. A few birds have just discovered they are in flower.
