22.01.2022 Invitation to GRA Members An open meeting to initiate a project on ‘Engaging with Racism In Ourselves and Society' WEDNESDAY, 29 MAY 2019, 6:30 PM-8 PM... VAPP, 18 ERIN STREET, RICHMOND At the Members evening on 6 March, we proposed that Group Relations Australia undertake a two year project to explore the dynamics of racism. Our interest in suggesting this project is a response to events around the world and in Australia in which we are witnessing and experiencing political and social turmoil, [re-]emergence of fascist ‘strong man’ political leaders, white supremacist protests, nationalism, closed borders and deepening divisions in society, all of which appear to be primitive responses to collective and individual experiences of contemporary life. With the purpose of promoting understanding of the unconscious dynamics that result in racism in mind, we wish to explore this topic through a series of events and activities over a two year period, as was done in the GRA Seeking Asylum project. We invite interested GRA Members and Associates to an open meeting to initiate the project, brainstorm ideas for activities and events, and to form a Working Group for progressing next steps and coordinating project activities. To RSVP by 24 May: E: [email protected] T: Jinette de Goojier 0412 138 952

20.01.2022 Being a mother makes us real. It activates rawness in our being that has probably never been exposed before. We spend so much of our lives as mothers putting on ‘a face’ each day to go to work, to meet the expectations of other people in society and to avoid conflict with our loved ones. Being sleep deprived, having our bodies used as a machine to feed the life of another and not being able to attend to our own needs leaves little room for the construction of a false self ...although we usually try, or at least we did. In this state, we are raw. We are who we are in all the glamour and awkwardness. Our emotions are real therefore the way we interact is very human and this can make other people uncomfortable. The idea of this group came from two very real and accomplished working mothers. Kris has a background in law, leadership and organisational dynamics. Liz has a background in psychology, leadership and organisational dynamics, and we both experienced the struggles working women face each day. With our facilitation, GRA’s Working Mothers’ group is a way for working women to connect at a deeper level and explore the personal, organisational and societal structures that surround the issues relevant to working women. 19.01.2022 Covid-19 and the Foggy Mind by Liz Brnjak I am a working mother to a two-year old active boy. I have been struggling with a pervasive sense of fatigue and exhaustion during the current COVID lockdown. A recent conversation with one of my neighbours, who is a mother of two primary school aged children and I found ourselves sharing the return of our ‘foggy’, fatigued and vague selves which to be honest we hadn’t experienced in its full form since the first few months of having ...Continue reading
19.01.2022 The juggle of being the ‘good enough’ mother, managing a career, keeping our relationships together, staying fit and healthy and not to mention the fear of staying relevant in a fast paced, changing world is very real to many of us working mothers. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it is a time to take stock of our collective achievements but also a time to bond together in acknowledging we have a long way to go. I do wonder what holds us back sometimes; is it ours...elves or society? Women are champions yet we don’t completely believe it. Hence why cards like this exist! Kris Karlsson and Liz Brnjak are both high achieving women attempting to juggle all these balls, sometimes with little success and disastrous outcomes! We wish to explore how these issues play out in the workplace therefore we are facilitating a 5 week group commencing 14 April to share these dilemmas, hear of other women's experiences and create meaningful change. Stay tuned for more info.

18.01.2022 A very direct and real disaster to many of us right now is the devastating fires burning across Australia. Many of us are faced with terror, despair, hopelessness, rage and frustration as we watch humans, animals and nature being immediately affected, with communities being lost and fear about our future deepens. In no other time in history have we been bombarded with information available to us 24 hours a day through social media, television and technology. There is an a...bundance of information portraying disaster, tragedy, fear, hatred and turmoil, all of which affects us in sometimes direct but mostly subliminal ways. It is not uncommon to develop a degree of anxiety and worry about the state of the world. We can make a difference only if we are present and conscious ourselves. Unfortunately there is a somewhat melancholic realisation that the world will remain troubled whether we worry or not. So what do we do? There is little to be gained by excessively consuming our thoughts with worry. Instead we can focus on how we can make positive contributions to society. This can only be achieved if we can manage our emotional states, acknowledge our feelings and be present in our day to day life. As we have seen with the bushfire crisis in Australia, humans have the capacity for immense hope, compassion, giving and resilience. How can we bring these qualities in to our everyday life so we can grow as a country and support each other as we go about being human?

09.01.2022 The 2020 Group Relations Conference 'Working with Diversity: Exploring the Dynamics of Cross-cultural Relations in Groups, Organisations and Communities' has been rescheduled to be held in 2021. 06.01.2022 Hi Members, Here is the May edition of the newsletter. https://mailchi.mp/f6090212680d/gra_may_news-2552849
06.01.2022 We are in a very interesting time with the worldwide pandemic gaining full force and challenging the way live our lives. We are social beings by nature and derive our sense of connectedness, purpose and meaning by interacting, contributing and achieving. Our frame of reference is being challenged as we are asked to work from home, reduce social contact and spend more time in close quarters with the people we share our homes with. In all corners of the globe right now peopl...e are highly anxious, understandably distressed as jobs and homes are lost, increased death toll and the impact on our lives as we know it. Anxiety is a very contagious disease, even more so than COVID-19. Anxiety has the power to divide people, to activate our survival instinct of fight or flight and look after ourselves at the expense of others. When this occurs we are no longer in the thinking/wise mind but coming from a place of reactivity Strict conditions imposed by the government are needed, as relying on people to be considerate and utilise common sense is not happening frequently enough. Unfortunately for many families these stricter conditions will mean an increase in family violence, child abuse and mental health disturbance. Someone suffers no matter which way we look at it: if we don’t have stricter rules then our most vulnerable will die as a result of the virus, yet having stricter rules means innocent children, women and our psychologically fragile will be tested and suffer immensely. All this places excessive demands on an already under resourced mental health system. It is easy to judge when we come from a place of privilege but for many people these changes could threaten their safety and livelihood. We are seeing the best of humanity with many people giving of their resources, time and energy. This is similar to what we observed in the recent Australian bushfire devastation. Who we really are is tested at times of adversity. It is easy to be kind and generous when life goes well, but not as easy during times of stress. Now is the time for self-examination. One day in the future we will return to our previous lives, but what would have changed? This is the question we need to contemplate if real change is to occur. This pandemic has happened for a reason and we are responsible for it. We also have the power to change the course of the future, but are we really ready to give up comfort, money, power and individualism to achieve it? These are the bigger philosophical and fundamental questions to be considered.
06.01.2022 We have 3 spots left in our free working mother's reflective session tomorrow afternoon. If you are a working mother or know someone who is, then this might be interest you. Click on the link for further information https://www.grouprelations.org.au//working-mothers-reflec/
05.01.2022 The Disembodied Relations at Work conference will give participants the opportunity to explore the lived experiences, interpersonal and unconscious group dynamics of working online during a pandemic and to develop and experiment with new approaches for building more effective online working groups and teams where members can encounter each other more fully and productively. The conference focus is on experiential learning, unlike more traditional conferences. There are no ‘c...onference presentations’ for example. You will be engaged in various organisational and learning tasks in groups with different configurations designed to challenge ways of thinking about self, others and group behaviour. Learning happens within programmed events, and in interactions with others in informal gatherings invirtual space. The learning is participative, immediate and continues long beyond the time of the conference. It is an intensive model of learning with a ratio of one staff to every four participants. Participant numbers are limited to a maximum of 40 The conference will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons AEDT 16 February - 17 March 2021 Applications are now open. Book before 15 January 2021 to be eligible for early bird discount! Partial bursaries are available now. Learn more here: bit.ly/DisembodiedRelationsAtWork
04.01.2022 Please see our latest blog written by the very talented writer, woman and mother Kristina Karlsson Over a year ago, I became entranced by a painting of a young woman hanging in my local café. It was by a local artist, Pascale Garlinge. The young woman looks out of the frame into the distance. Her gaze is strong, and humbly defiant. My strongest association with that painting, as I sat there day after day wondering whether I could buy it, was that she was comfortable with the ...Continue reading
