25.01.2022 In todays edition of @postnewspapers - coverage of Mosman Parks link to the iconic Holden story. Did you know there was once an assembly plant where Iona prim...ary is now? It closed in 1972. This story features images and an interview taken with one of the original workers, Ron Jess. It first appeared in the Towns Community Calendar 2014. @ Mosman Park, Western Australia, Australia See more
24.01.2022 As I was collating information to mark the 10th anniversary of the wonderful Grove Library, I came across some gems which might get a few peoples nostalgic juices flowing. Heres a few happy snaps of the old library operational since1967 in the building previously on this site in Leake Street.
23.01.2022 Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Peppermint Grove? Let us take you there Its an opportunity to share stories and connect with old friends. Pepperm...int Grove is one of the Perths most beautiful suburbs on the Swan River, known for its grand character homes, tranquil tree-lined streets and parks. It also has the unique status of being the smallest municipality in Australia, covering just 1.5 square kilometres of land. Prior to European settlement of the area it was thickly wooded with tuart, jarrah, red gum, banksia as well as the peppermint trees which gave the suburb its name. Brumbies roamed in the area, along with native cats, wallabies and an abundance of birds. The Aboriginal Nyoongars of the South West were connected to the land. In 1830 John Butler, an innkeeper, was given a grant of 250 acres on Freshwater Bay, after unsuccessfully attempting to secure land at Claremont. From here he operated "The Bush Inn". In 1886, a syndicate of businessmen, including Alexander Forrest and George Leake, purchased the land from his children and subdivided it. Large lots at 7 to 12 each were attractive for families wishing to keep livestock. Two of the earliest residents were Edward Keane, Lord Mayor of Perth, and John Forrest, Premier of Western Australia. The increasing popularity of the motor car during the 1930s made the beach and river even more accessible to visitors. Freshwater Bay was and still is, a popular weekend place for families. A tearoom, public bathing sheds and a boatshed offering boat hire were built. The beauty of the bay and its suitability for sailing prompted the establishment of one of WAs most prestigious yachting clubs in Peppermint Grove. In 1934, the club was granted permission to use the royal prefix and became known as The Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club which still exists today. 23.01.2022 As our library nears its 10th year lets take a look back at the origins of the little cafe which so diligently satisfies all our caffeine cravings and serves up tasty sweet treats on a daily basis. Firstly we had Thomas Greene, or Toffee as we fondly dubbed him. He christened the humble set up The Monogram Cafe and became famous for his little $2 homemade lemon curd tarts. I was particularly lucky to be adopted as his guinea pig, being the first one into the library at...Continue reading

21.01.2022 The forthcoming exhibition is coming together nicely. I am learning such a lot about Suffrage and the plight of women in the 19th and 20th Century. Women had very few rights in the 1800s and those were relinquished once they married. Women, although they carried, birthed and cared for their children were given no proprietary rights over her family or her home and belongings. A husband could restrict access to the children and even bequeath their care to a third party afte...r his death. Unimaginable in modern society. Suffragettes were a passionate and fierce group of influencers who campaigned for change. Often arrested and sometimes abused and even assaulted by authority, these women fought on and are responsible for the freedom we as modern women enjoy today. The exhibition, scheduled for 15th until 26th February will pay tribute to these brave women and in particular to two local women Bessie and Olive Earle who used their status to give a voice to those unable to be heard. To Bessie, Olive and all the women past and present who campaigned and fought, suffered and died for our rights... Thank you.
21.01.2022 What a glorious morning we had had here in Grove History. We have been immersed in the newly digitised sketches and paintings created by the local community doctor of the 1900s, Dr Blackall. He was best known for his commitment to the local people of Cottesloe, Peppermint Grove and Mosman Park but what you may not know is that he was also a gifted artist with a passion for sketching the wildflowers of the area at the time. I have the very difficult task of selecting just 3...0 images to display here in the library from 7th until 18th May. Every image I view is equally magnificent so how can I choose between them? The exhibition will form part of the National Trusts Heritage Festival and is a collaboration between the Blackall family, the Western Australian Herbarium and Grove History. I am truly stunned by the detail and beauty in these sketches so be sure to save the date and drop by to take a look for yourselves.

20.01.2022 We are trying to trace the origins of this image of the Lido Cabaret in Cottesloe. We would like to use it in the new digital heritage trail and would like to request permission from the copyright owner. If anyone knows its origin please contact us asap at [email protected] Also if anyone has an image of the building while it was operating as the Mandarin Restaurant, we would love to hear from you.
20.01.2022 GOODBYE DEBRA Debra joined the library back in 2011, moving from Rockhampton in Queensland with her family. Since arriving at the Grove Debra has steered the t...eam effectively for nine years. She has nurtured a happy, relaxed team atmosphere which has given staff the room to grow and express their creativity. The result has been the diverse and magnificent array of fun activities and events which you have enjoyed since opening back in 2010. Sadly Debra felt it was time to hang up her tartan tights and head back to the Sunshine State to retire. We thank her for being such an awesome leader and wish her many marvelous journeys and years of idle bliss. Image courtesy of The Post Newspapers

19.01.2022 I just LOVE my job. What a way to end a week. Another patron walking away with a huge smile on their face because they have just taken a trip down memory lane by taking part in our Webcam Memories program. He was wowed by the images which were designed to provoke memories from his childhood and it was evident he thoroughly enjoyed sharing his experience with us. We, in turn are thrilled that we now have those precious memories recorded for future generations who may never know how idyllic life was before all the noise from technology. I am so proud to be able to facilitate this valuable and therapeutic process. You too can drop by and take part, no appointment necessary just call in Monday to Friday and help us make history. 19.01.2022 ROTTNEST CHANNEL SWIM This historic event is once again set to transform our local beach into a frenzy of eager swimmers hoping to make it across the water between Cottesloe and Rottnest. The full history of this and other Cottesloe coastal icons is detailed in the Cottesloe Beach Heritage Trail which can be downloaded free of charge from both Google Play and iTunes. https://www.thegrovelibrary.net//grove-heritage-trails.aspx... Here's where it all began. On 24th January, 1956, a German visitor named Gerd von Dincklage-Schulenburg made good on a bet he had made over a beer in a pub and swam from North Mole in Fremantle to Natural Jetty in Rottnest becoming the first recorded person to complete the swim. Despite being warned of the dangers associated with the swim, mainly the cold, rips and of course sharks, Gerd was not discouraged and completed the distance in 9 hours and 45 minutes. The Weekend Mail consequently offered cash prizes to better Gerd’s record and just two months afterwards, the first competitive race was held. The advertisement generated a lot of interest so the West Australian Amateur Swimming Association suggested an elimination race in the sheltered waters of the Swan River in order to ensure that participants were able to make the distance and were not putting themselves in danger. From the 22 registered entrants, only 9 completed the course. Of those finalists, two swimmers withdrew before the race and only 4 made it from the mainland to the island, all bettering Gerd von Dincklage-Schulenburg’s time. It wasn’t until April 1969 that another recorded swim took place. This saw English Migrant Lesley Cherriman become the first woman to complete the Rottnest Channel swim. Numerous attempts were made over the next 20 years, when in preparation for the 6th FINA World Championships in 1991, the Rottnest Channel Swim Association was formed. The Associations’ priorities were to authenticate people who wanted to swim the Rottnest Channel, promote safety, to advise and encourage swimmers, in addition to collecting data from the crossings. On 23rd February, 1991, the second official Rottnest Channel race was held. At 5.30am, 16 solo swimmers left Cottesloe Beach and seven teams of four swimmers left at 6am. Only 12 solo swimmers completed the 19.7km crossing, however all 7 teams were successful. Despite the ever present risk of hypothermia and shark attacks, the Rottnest Channel Swim has become the world’s largest open water swimming event. Today, swimmers have a support boat manned with a trained crew to ensure the safety of the swimmers. Extensive training and briefings for swimmers and all volunteers help ensure the efficiency and success of the event. However the Rottnest Channel Swim still remains a gruelling endurance event and should only be attempted by experienced registered participants during organised Rottnest Channel Swim events. 15.01.2022 Sculpture by the Sea is the brainchild of David Handley AM, who saw the need for a free accessible visual arts event which evokes a sense of community. In 1997 with the support of Waverley Council and sponsors the first exhibition took place in Bondi, Sydney. It was entirely manned by volunteers and almost all of the sponsorship money was allocated to artist awards. [ 205 more words ] https://cottesloehistory.wordpress.com//sculptures-by-the/

08.01.2022 Save the date...Earle family exhibition. Bessie and Olive Earle were born in Adelaide, South Australia. They were part of a family consisting of six children born to William and Jane Earle. Bessie and her sister Olive lived for a time during their childhood with their uncle (by marriage), William Benjamnin Rounsevell, a businessman and pastoralist. Living with William and participating in family discussions, enabled Bessie and Olive to gain a good grasp of politics and the... issue of feminism. Bessie married Henry Wills Rischbieth in 1898. They came to WA the following year. Henry Rischbieth was a wool merchant and the founder of Henry Wills & Co, one of WA's major companies during the Gold Boom period. Around 1903, they built a grand house at 5 View Street in Peppermint Grove and named it 'Unalla'. The couple had no children of their own but Bessie was extremely close to her sister Olive. While visiting her sister, Oliver met William Evans and ultimately the couple married and settled not far from Bessie and Henry, at 60 The Esplanade in Peppermint Grove. Bessie is well known for campaigning for women's rights and social reform. Olive and William had 6 Children; William Jnr, Racheal (later Dame Rachael Cleland DBE), twins Margaret and Barbara, David and Mary. Olive was also considered a strong woman actively involved in the community. She ultimately became State President of the Women’s Service Guild of Western Australia in 1935 and Trustee of The Cottesloe Infant Health Association. Visit The Grove Library to see some of the gems donated by the Evans family and learn about the lesser known facts of this amazing Peppermint Grove pioneering family as we pay tribute to the Earle sisters. The Exhibition will run from 26th until 25th February 2021. Covid permitting of course!

06.01.2022 Today I finally discovered the provenance for a collection of greeting cards, postcards and images dating back to the 1800s which was deposited in Community History earlier this year. Turns out it is related to the Bickford Family of Fremantle. There is even a card sent from the trenches in 1917 and a little love card sent from Emily to to her husband William, presumably while he was away at war. William was a Railway Ganger during the early 1900s. He joined the No.6 Tun...neling Company in 1916 and was trained at Blackboy Hill before being transported to France later the same year. The detail of these amazing little cards created by Raphael Tuck and Sons, official publishers to The King and Queen of England is truly magical. What a joy it was to sleuth through and piece the names in the greeting cards together to deduce which family they belonged to. They will be donated to Fremantle Local History Library on Thursday but I just had to share a few of the gems with you before they leave my care. #lovemyjob

04.01.2022 All too often those precious conversations you have had over the years with elderly family members fade over time and its difficult to recall what was said. With so many of us rushing around with such busy lives we never seem to find the time to stop, listen and document those tales our grandparents and parents tell us. Well here at The Grove weve made it easy by creating a workbook called My Story which asks all the questions you need in order to map your family members... thoughts and experiences that they have had throughout their life. With a guided series of questions from early childhood through to retirement it is now so easy to record the information and add photos to this comprehensive memory book. They are available to download and print free of charge or you can pop into the library and purchase a bound hard copy for just $5. So no more excuses, give one to your family today! https://www.thegrovelibrary.net/communi/family-history.aspx See more
