24.01.2022 I’ve been a bit busy to post anything lately, but our team are so well trained and organised now I can take 5 minutes to show you what we’re up to! We’re busy picking and packing our lychees. Aiden found this perfect triplet in the Kaimana today.

24.01.2022 We are so grateful for the rain we’ve had but the full dams aren’t the only things making us smile. These beautiful autumn crocuses pop up after rain and look so bright and cheerful.

23.01.2022 Christmas is nearly here so we decided to add some Christmas Bells to our picking list today. We found some beautiful Wax Jambu ready just in time!

22.01.2022 We’ve been doing some more hazard mitigation, cool burns control burns -what ever you’d like to call them. After the horrific fires here last year we are being even more conscientious to ensure we have the best preparation possible for the upcoming fire season. After some research into how our original land owners managed the bush, we’re attempting to follow their example making sure the fires happen in the cool and when the soil is not too wet. The soil moisture inf...luences the survival rate of the smaller animals such as lizards and frogs which burrow to escape fires. (Something I hadn’t even thought of.) We’re also planning on a 5 year rotation so that our bush isn’t burnt too often, but there’s not too much build up of fuel either. The fire photo is actually on our neighbour’s property where some grass was growing up to the bush which burnt quite well and the next photo is of where it went through the bush showing it hardly scorched the trees. The third photo is of a gully on our farm which we burnt one night a week or so ago. It was quite a cold night and I’m pleased to say the fire didn’t even disturb a bird we saw roosting in one of the trees. If we all do cool burns hopefully we won’t have any wildfires like last year that killed everything in their path -animals and trees! See more

19.01.2022 I’m a bit late putting this up but our goal at Groves Grown is to educate as many people as possible on how their food is produced and what a great job Aussie farmers do!

19.01.2022 More good news about the rain. Aido gets to star this time as well!!

18.01.2022 We find lots of different shapes and markings when we’re picking fruit. Here’s a couple of Linda’s favourites.

18.01.2022 The Dragon Fruit Grower has been busy. Here’s a short video we made to promote #EatYourselfToHealth. Growcom are promoting eating more fruit and veg as a great way to improve your health and ability to cope withCOVID-19 and isolation. It’s always good to try something new and different and if you haven’t tried a dragon fruit now is a great time to do so. Scoop it out of the skin and eat as is, add it to ice cream for a yummy dessert, make a beautiful jam with the red flesh ones, make fantastic fruit cocktails mixed with pineapple juice, the possibilities are endless! How do you eat your dragon fruit??

18.01.2022 Last night we got to enjoy a night out at the Capricorn Food and Wine Festival - Farmer Meets Foodie. After some talking/question answer time we got to taste what chef Cameron Maltby can do with offal. Sounds a bit off putting to some but tasted delicious!

18.01.2022 We’re still picking Wurtz avocado but we’ve also started picking loquats and carambola or star fruit. I thought it was time to make another video so on Friday I asked our pickers what was their favourite way to eat carambola. If you’re looking for another way to boost your immune system, why not try a carambola or star fruit. Let’s #EatYourselfToHealth

17.01.2022 For all of you who have been wondering what happened to Albert, we’ve just got this video from him down in Sydney.

17.01.2022 I think I’ve found my favourite way a eating carambola! I’m with Will!! It’s hard to beat warm upside down carambola cake with a dollop of cream and ice cream. Thanks Brooke! Delicious!! #EatYourselfToHealth.

15.01.2022 Just got this message! Albert has arrived in Sydney!!

15.01.2022 Lots of people know carambola as 5 corner fruit, but they don’t always have 5 corners!!

15.01.2022 Here’s the final instalment of Albert the Avocado (we think - you hope!?!?). We were fortunate to have on the site news reporters. Thanks to Greg McConnell, Maurice from Sutherland Best Fresh, Kim, Aido and Emily for having some fun with What’s your favourite way to eat Avocado #EatYourselfToHealth #SmashAnAvoAtHome

14.01.2022 We’ve had some pretty wild storms here the last few days with yesterday’s being the worst. Fortunately we don’t appear to have lost too much fruit.

14.01.2022 Trialing a new fruit fly trap/product to see if it works as well as the sales people say. The male traps work brilliantly and sometimes we can catch hundreds in a day, but boys are much easier to trick/trap then girls!!

14.01.2022 Unfortunately we forgot about some stakes and ties we’d put on some wobbly lychee trees some time back. When we saw half a tree suddenly die we wondered what on earth had happened until we had a closer look. Today we walked the paddock and found quite a few more ties choking our poor trees. Hopefully they’ll all recover now.

12.01.2022 You can’t say we’re not safety conscious at Groves Grown - even the dogs wear high vis!!! (It was a bit like herding cats to get them all to sit still).

12.01.2022 Just had a lovely surprise visit from Ana who worked with us a few months ago. She brought dinner with her - a traditional Belgium dish of stuffed capsicum. It was delicious - so delicious we ate it without taking a photo. Did however teach Ana a new way to eat a traditional Aussie food - Tim Tams. Normally would sip liqueur but milk is a healthier option!

10.01.2022 A belated post- David recently found an unusual looking frog while picking up the last of the trees blown down in Cyclone Marcia. We "phoned a friend" and it turns out it's a vulnerable "Tusked Frog" (Adelotus brevis). Moving a frog isn't ideal, but leaving it where it was would have meant ending up as a kookaburra's lunch, so we relocated it to one of our gullies where the conditions were hopefully suitable.

09.01.2022 Here’s the next instalment of What’s your favourite way to eat avocado? It’s a bit longer as it shows the journey of Albert the Avocado from paddock to transport. (To hear Albert make sure you have the sound on.). Hopefully we will get to see Albert again when he gets on the truck and when he gets to Sydney. I wonder who’s favourite recipe Albert will be? Remember - #EatYourselfToHealth and #SmashAnAvoAtHome

09.01.2022 Not all things go to plan unfortunately, but with a positive approach you can make the best of any situation. A few months ago David noticed a native bee hive in the top of a dead tree. All good. Then, after a storm, top of tree/hive broke off and got wedged in a branch. No real drama except it was in a very precarious position. Big concern that next big storm all would come smashing to the ground in rain and no more bee hive! David to the rescue! He rigged up a contraption to lift broken hive out of branch. Unfortunate it didn’t all go to plan, but it was still a slow fall and hive survived. All good in the end with hive saved!

09.01.2022 Social distancing and we’re in the pink packing some beautiful green skin wurtz avos today!!

09.01.2022 Another rainy day?!? The boys are in "isolation" cleaning out the shed. I think they need some help!

09.01.2022 Albert the Avocado (and our very own Mr Aido) made an appearance on ABC News' The World last night! #smashanavoinsiso

08.01.2022 We have a bit of a plague happening on the farm at the moment- FROGS!!!! They are mostly very cute. We’ve got lots of dainty tree frogs as well as your regular green tree frogs. This one was living on a bin in the shed, came for a ride out to the avo paddock and then back to the shed.

08.01.2022 Girls can do anything and our girls are the best. The girls have been plugging away at the renovations with Linda becoming the expert at corners while Katherina mastered the fine art of cornicing today. I keep forgetting to take phots of the progress but here’s one of Kat with her worst corner which looks pretty good to me.

06.01.2022 What the girls do while they’re waiting for the boys to pick more fruit for them to pack!!! (Relax - it’s only water!)

06.01.2022 Just a little post to update our Facebook page and say hi to new followers. We are a family run farm in the hinterlands of the Capricorn Coast in Central Queensland, approximately 20 minutes from the town of Yeppoon. We grow lychees, mangoes, carambola, avocado, loquats and dragon fruit.... The Groves family has been farming on this farm since 1958. The original farm grew pineapples and changed to tree crops in 1981. We employ up to 30 people during our busy season between November to March. Sorry- but as a small wholesale farm, we don’t sell privately/post fruit or trees. Thanks for stopping by! - Sandi, Groves Grown Tropical Fruit

06.01.2022 It’s not all about picking fruit atGroves Grown Tropical Fruits. We’re currently getting a cottage ready to house some ‘backpacker pickers’. Katherina Gill is managing the project and was busy outside cutting things when I took these photo of the girls. Notice Aido in the background just ‘picking his nose’ and watching on!! Emily our business trainee sped through the policy writing/ typing so she could get over there to join the action. She got a lesson from Aido on using the driver so he could get out of that job too!

06.01.2022 It has all hands or should I say heads on deck today as we put up the ceiling panels. Ian was really using his head!

05.01.2022 Busy day today at Groves Grown. We poured a new concrete drive so hopefully our fruit gets a smoother ride up to the top cold room. Now the storm water should flow into the gully and not down next to the shed. (Also might make a great roller skate track Jacinta Groves).

04.01.2022 Today is number 1 son’s birthday so we decided to do something special and have a staff development day - on the water. Pity he’s not here to enjoy it!!

03.01.2022 A busy day today planting trees. They're all planted, watered and bagged. Just got to mulch them and they'll be all ready to grow.

02.01.2022 Not sure how making fly screens ties into a business course but that was the new skill for Em today. (She did also participate in a webinar on working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Communities. That would certainly be useful in any business course!)

02.01.2022 Today’s Staff Development Day was a resounding success with all the modules covered being closely aligned to the necessary skill set required for working on the farm. All participants passed with flying colours! (BS reigned supreme!)

01.01.2022 I was too tired to put this up last night, but we had a magic day out on the water thanks to Paul and Valeroo. It was our way to say thank you to our wonderful backpackers. Girls got to show off their skippering skills too! (Best thing is I get to enjoy a day off too!!)

01.01.2022 Albert’s off to the Big Smoke! Albert the Avocado is on his way to Sydney and we hope we get to hear more of his adventures and maybe find out even more delicious favourite ways people eat their avos. Remember #EatYourselfToHealth and #SmashAnAvoAtHome

01.01.2022 We miss Peter Byrne’s interpretation of the forecast- He used local knowledge and experience as well as technology. (He also checked what was happening out the window!). So often we’ll hear rain forecast and there’s not a cloud in the sky or the complete opposite 5% chance of 0mm and it’s pouring!
