24.01.2022 We spoke with Costa Georgiadis Official as part of the National Sustainable Living Festival Great Local Lunch on Sunday. Tune in around 2.05 to see Catie, George, Sapphire and Alice in action. No backyard is safe So many inspiring projects are featured too, its well worth the watch for an inspiration injection.

24.01.2022 We acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we will soon farm, the area now known as Fawkner. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging. They have sustainably harvested food for thousands of years on this land. Our hope is to gain deeper understanding and move towards greater action for Indigenous sovereignty as we continue to develop our projects on these sacred lands. Sovereignty was never ceded and we can't shy away from the fact that we continue to farm on stolen land. This video was taken at Bababi Djinanang which lies on the Merri Creek, in the area now known as Fawkner. It means Mothers Foot in Wurundjeri and forms part of less than 1% of native grasslands left in Victoria.

16.01.2022 We are Growing Farmers Inc. a new community led project that originated in Moreland. Our projects connect urban growers with land, mentoring and networking opportunities as well as nurturing new social connections between our neighbours. We are beyond excited to announce we have been successful in securing funding for our first pilot, Backyard Farmers Project, thanks to Moreland City Council. The project matches aspiring urban farmers and volunteers with older people in our c...ommunity who have underused backyard spaces and are seeking greater social connection. The pilot project is set to take place in the northern Moreland suburb of Fawkner with the longer term goal of expanding to greater Melbourne. We are currently on the hunt for urban farmers, Fawkner residents who would love to see their gardens in full production and people who want to donate their time and resources to see this project come to life. Check out our website for ways to get involved. https://www.growingfarmers.org.au/backyard-farmers-project

15.01.2022 Introducing the Backyard Owners Team for Backyard Farmers Project. Meet Elly and Sally! They are both community engagement powerhouses who have many years of experience between them. Together they will support our backyard owners through the pilot run. ... Sally is a Fawkner resident who co-founded Fawkner Food Bowls Fawkner Commons at the local Bowling Club and loves the food cultures of the area. Sally is also a recent graduate of CERES Environment Park Complete Urban Farmer course and is passionate about hyper-local solutions. Elly believes in the power (and fun!) of local communities working together. She is a Moreland resident and works at the local council, as well as being a member of Rotary Club of Moreland. Elly is also a keen gardener and general lover of nature. Here they are at Fawkner Food Bowls amongst the leafy greens! Next up we will be introducing the backyards and the farmers!

14.01.2022 The Backyard Farmers Project is well underway! We have been busy the last couple of weeks sorting through applications, talking to and interviewing a gang of incredible, inspiring and enthusiastic people who want to offer their space and or farm on this space. Believe the hype, Urban Agriculture is alive and kicking! We could accommodate two backyards and farmers with this pilot. For anyone who missed out, there will be more rounds to come. We also encourage you to add your n...ame to the volunteer list, as we will need many hands for getting these backyards market garden ready. Follow the link in our bio and fill out our contact form, we’ll be in touch. We also invite you to get involved volunteering at Fawkner Food Bowls, they have a fabulous and ever expanding market garden to help and learn in. Stay tuned as we start to introduce the teams over the next couple of days here. This photo is from Sapphire's backyard, one of the two pilot gardens!

11.01.2022 Backyard Farmers Project: introducing backyard farmers dream team 1! Meet Sapphire, Catie and George and Leila. Sapphire is the backyard owner partnered with farmers Catie and George and mentored by Leila. Not pictured here is Sally, who will be our backyard owner support.... Sapphire has very generously offered her Fawkner backyard for the project and has lived here for 5 years. She is an active fungi ecologist, conservationist and permaculturalist and has already been a fount of knowledge to us all. Sapphire has a wonderfully productive front yard food garden with a native hedge (see the last pic in this series), its the big backyard that is just too big. Sapphire is hoping to get to know more food focused people and help to supply local produce in Fawkner through supporting this program. Catie and George are a very dynamic duo and self proclaimed food enthusiasts. They were drawn to the project as they are looking to grow their love of small scale farming into something they can share, both as fresh, local produce and community connection. For Catie and George gaining access to land in the inner city removes a huge barrier for them and they can’t wait to get started. They will be supported by Leila, Growing Farmers Treasurer and legend in the garden! Leila has experience in community food enterprises, organic farming and sustainability education, including as general manager of The Community Grocer, and was a founding member of Farmer Incubator. The team is creating their plot design as we gear up for our first 'blitz' days. These days will see a team of volunteers come and get the backyard market garden ready. If you would like to volunteer with us for one of these days, please follow the link in our bio and complete our online contact form, we'll be in touch. growingfarmers.org.au

It's a great way to learn in a super supportive way. They have just released their latest and final site in Keilor, it's a beauty! You can follow the link below to register for this course

03.01.2022 We are recruiting right now for our first pilot, the Backyard Farmers Project. The project brings together aspiring urban farmers and Fawkner residents with big and under utilised yards, to share knowledge, land and harvests.
