24.01.2022 If you’ve got any Autumn leaves lying around the garden, they make a nice addition to your worm farm. The more variety in your worms’ diet, the more diverse the micro-organism profile in their worm castings and the better the results you will see in your plants! In their natural environment, compost worms are surface-feeders in the leaf litter on the forest floor, so a layer of leaves in your worm farm will make them feel right at home! Tip some water over the leaves to speed up their breakdown. Happy worm farming!

07.01.2022 Keeping your worms cool in the hot weather Another hot day forecast for Sunday. In above-ground, multi-tray worm farms, the worms try to regulate their temperature by moving down from the top feeding tray to the lower tray/s. This is because the food in the top feeding tray produces heat as it breaks down, so the bedding in this tray is hotter than the older, lower trays where the bedding/food is more processed (for this reason, it's a good idea not to harvest the castings tr...ay until the height of summer has passed). Signs that the worms are heat stressed are that they come out of the bedding and mass around the edges of the worm farm in clumps. The worms might even escape the heat into the liquid collection tray at the bottom of the worm farm, which is ok as long as it is drained so they don’t drown. If you usually keep the worm farm tap open with a bucket under it (which is recommended), you may need to close the tap to prevent worms coming out of it into the bucket of liquid fertiliser to escape in extreme heat conditions. Once the hot day is over, the worms should wriggle back into the bedding/feeding tray. If a lot of worms have gathered in the liquid collection tray, most worm farms have a hump in the middle, which allows the worms to crawl back up to the trays. Alternatively, you can tip the worms back into the top feeding tray once the heat has passed. You may need to implement some worm farm cooling strategies in extreme heat (over 40’C) or when there’s consecutive very hot days (high 30s) and the bedding doesn’t get a chance to cool down. Luckily, if there’s only one hot day followed by a cool change, the bedding doesn’t get a chance to heat up as much and you can usually get through the day without having to implement any cooling strategies. Of course, make sure the worm farm is positioned out of full sun (a bit of morning sun is usually tolerated), ideally in deep shade, on the south side of the house or a shed or even under the house. Worm Farm Cooling Strategies: 1. Flush the worm farm through with cold water. If the water coming out of tap feels warm, keep flushing it through until the water is cool (it can also help to keep the lid off so heat can escape). 2. Burying a frozen bottle of water or an ice pack in the worm farm creates a cool zone for the worms. Replace it once it defrosts if necessary. 3. A thick layer of wet newspaper inside the worm farm and wet towels over the top of the worm farm are other good ways to create a cool microclimate for the worms. Stay cool!
