24.01.2022 Weaning is a personal choice between mum and bub! Weaning can be encouraged by external sources however, this pressure isn’t always justified. A baby that has been weaned implies that there is no breastmilk in their diet. Check out some pressures below that mums may encounter: Your baby is too old: This is not a reason to stop breastfeeding! Your little one will reap the benefits of breastmilk always. It’s important to be aware that breastmilk shouldn’t displace other ...important nutrients following the 6-month mark when their growth needs for nutrients are more difficult to be met from breastmilk alone . WHO recommends that breastfeeding continue until 2 years and beyond, for as long as the mother and child desire. Returning to work: Many women can continue to partially or fully breastfeed their little ones if they’re returning to work. What works for you will depend on your workplace and the arrangements for your baby’s care. You can consider doing a mix of; breastfeeding before/after work and bottle-feeding with expressed milk or formula during the day. Teeth troubles: Many bubs develop their first teeth between 6-9 months this doesn’t mean breastfeeding has to cease! Even toddlers and pre-schoolers with a full set of baby teeth can be comfortably breast-fed. Reach out to a lactation consultant for support if required. Weaning isn’t always a linear journey either. If you’re looking for assistance with your weaning journey, head to the link in my bio to sign up for a FREE 20 min discovery call. @lalanisalestephotography

18.01.2022 Planning to breastfeed? Breastfeeding your new-born baby doesn't always come naturally or easily, especially in the beginning, and nursing can have its share of ups and downs. It can be an intensely loving, bonding experience or it can be filled with tears when nursing sessions don’t go quite as planned. Breast milk comes in three stages It might surprise you to know that in the beginning, your breast milk changes by the week and each formulation is designed to meet you...r newborn’s precise needs: Colostrum. At first, you’re producing a yellowy substance called colostrum. Colostrum helps provide your little one with the nutrients and antibodies they need to fight infections in the early days. A little goes a long way, so your baby only needs a few teaspoons at a time, which might be all you’re producing. Transitional milk. Three to five days after birth, colostrum is replaced with transitional milk. Just as the name suggests, transitional milk which looks like a mixture of orange juice and milk is the stage between colostrum and mature breast milk. Mature milk. Usually between the tenth day and second week, mature milk finally comes in. It’s white and slightly thinner than transitional milk, resembling watery skim milk, and can appear bluish at first. 17.01.2022 I wanted a vaginal birth and to breastfeed without pain. But they said: "a healthy baby is all that matters" and "fed is best". So I guess it didn't really matt...er. I wanted to see my friends and go to the supermarket alone sometimes. But they said: "this is what you wanted, isn't it?" and "aren't kids just the best?" So I guess it didn't really matter. I wanted a safe space to talk about how tired I was, how hard it was to juggle all the things and how lonely I could feel on occasion. But they said: "well, you brought this upon yourself" and "that's the rod you made for your own back". So I guess it didn't really matter. I wanted to grieve my body and everything it went through to bring my babies into the world. But they said: "just embrace the change" and "what did you expect?" So I guess it didn't really matter. I wanted to cry, I wanted to fit - beyond being the glue that held it all together. But they said: "motherhood is a blessing" and "you should be grateful". So I guess it didn't really matter. I wanted to put down the weight upon my shoulders; it was crushing me. Because it did matter. It does matter. It will never stop mattering. Image: Janko Ferli

17.01.2022 Birth trauma and breastfeeding *note, birth trauma takes many forms and does not need to be life threatening to be traumatic. If you are experiencing any distr...ess after your birth, please reach out for support.* I worked as a midwife for 17 years before my third child was born. I thought I understood birth trauma. I did not. Ok, ok that's not strictly true. I had been around my fair share of really difficult births, bad experiences, sad outcomes. I wasn't blind to the impact it has by any means. But I didn't truly *understand*. I saw the physical pain, I could comprehend that. I saw the mental health struggles, I could comprehend that too. But birth trauma...its in a different league. It's not just pain or blues or worries. It's way more than the sum of its parts. Experiences vary, but certainly I've known the fear, the vulnerability, the shock. The incredible discordance between a complete dreamlike dissociation with events, and a massive crashing reality in clear, terrifying flashbacks. Anxiety, sleep disturbances, obsessive checking, loss of control. Numbness. People continually reassuring you that you're both safe and well now, when you feel anything but safe and well and wonder if you ever will again... And all the while, you have this tiny, precious person who has shaken you to your very core in a way you know has changed you forever. And you have to feed them, look after them, keep them safe and well, keep growing them. You may feel detached from them. Or you may feel 'overly protective' and anxious about them. Having a new baby is seriously hard. Breastfeeding is hard. When you add birth trauma to that, it's one hell of a ride. Inevitably, breastfeeding can be impacted. Physical barriers, such as separation at birth, being too unwell to feed, or NICU stays for example, can have an influence on getting feeding established. There is a huge list of physical barriers to breastfeeding that are related to birth trauma, and parents will likely need extra support, even with the basics. The mental barriers to breastfeeding should not be underestimated either. You may have lost faith in your body, in it's abilities. Lost faith in the system that is meant to support you. You may feel like you're the one that needs mothering, but instead you have to try and put your mental energy into breastfeeding, which is, even at the best of times, really hard and intense at first. For some parents, they feel it's not the right choice for them to breastfeed now, because they simply cannot face another trauma if things don't go well. And we absolutely must respect those decisions. Ideally, someone will have been able to have a gentle discussion so that it is an informed choice. There are many parents that regret not breastfeeding, or stopping too soon, so this discussion is useful if parents are receptive. For parents that have undergone birth trauma, it may be that they'd be happy to carry on doing some expressing for a little while in a manageable way, so as to keep the door open for breastfeeding further down the line if they wish to. For a lot of parents, the need to breastfeed becomes even more important to them. A need to be able to trust in their body again. A need to give their baby the best they can. A need to reclaim ownership of the journey into parenthood. The drive within them can become overwhelming and can be used to overcome the challenges that can be faced, and draw strength from within that they didn't even know they had. Sometimes, the trauma can manifest itself in the focus on breastfeeding. There can even be elements of obsession surrounding milk intake, weights, timings of feeds for example. On the surface feeding may be going well, but when you discuss it further it becomes apparent that the parent is having a hard time. What is so hugely important, no matter how the birth trauma affects things, is that the right support is available. Parents need help to navigate the difficulties, both physical and mental, with skilled, experienced support. Sadly, too many parents report not having access to this. I can't even begin to do justice to the impact birth trauma can have on your life, and on feeding your baby, but hopefully that in itself will impress how enormous it truly is. In the ideal world, breastfeeding would be healing, empowering, and replenishing. Did you experience birth trauma? How did it impact on feeding and parenting your baby? X (Happy to share my own in the comments if anyone would like to hear x)

15.01.2022 Different cultures around the world have developed breastfeeding traditions to assist with milk production. A study published in November 2020 (Ali et al., 2020) looked at the foods and herbs used by women in Ghana to do this typically these substances are referred to as lactogogues or galactogogues! The authors surveyed over 400 mothers to establish their knowledge and use of these herbs and foods. Of the women surveyed, very little information stemmed from the med...ia regarding galactagogues (less than 1%!), while most came from parents (32%) and grandparents (25%). The use of galactagogues were found to be widespread, with 84% of women interviewed were using them. They were mainly consumed to enhance breastmilk production, while a quarter used them as they were considered tradition. The interesting aspect is a large majority of women (98%!) felt the effect within 24 hours! The most common foods consumed was a ground nut soup with Bra leaves and hot black tea with Agushi. This highlights the importance and prominence of galactagogues within the diet of lactating women in Ghana. Women all around the world have differing traditions related to the postpartum period, and qualitative and quantitative studies like these ones are beneficial to improve education for lactating women around the world! It’s important too for the scientific community to conduct studies like this to gather data about safe amounts to consume and how these galactagogues may interact with other medication. Galactagogues common in the western community include fenugreek, fennel, milk thistle and asparagus! If you’re interested in their use and would like to discuss your breastfeeding journey send me a DM to book in a FREE 20min discovery call. I also have some more info about galactagogues in my blog head to the blog link below: https://growthspectrum.com.au/galactogogues-do-they-increa/

14.01.2022 Research shows that what you eat during pregnancy can affect your child’s food preferences. At about 21 weeks your little one is drinking plenty of amniotic fluid , of which is actually flavoured by what you’ve eaten in the hours before! An interesting test conducted by Julie Mennella, who studies taste in infants at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, observed if adults could identify smells in samples of amniotic fluid. The samples taken from pregnant women who ha...d consumed garlic pills, were easily identified by a panel! They knew the smell of garlic straight away. Another fun study administered regular carrot juice to pregnant mothers throughout gestation. When the children were born and began solids, they were given cereal with carrot juice or milk to choose from. Those who had experienced carrot in the amniotic fluid of their mothers, preferred the cereal with carrot juice. If you’re keen for your children to enjoy the taste of a variety of vegetables try your best to eat as much of them throughout your pregnancy! So, my self-care week will be spent at the beach soaking up the salt water and hot days, and with my soon to be 5 yr old boy who will start full time school this year...sob...where has the time gone!? 12.01.2022 The microbiome is a hot topic in science communities at the moment links have been made to all sorts of health conditions, moods and chronic diseases. A study conducted in the UK looked at the effect of probiotics on preterm infants and how this may improve their gut microbiome to reflect a full-term infant's (Alcon-Giner et al., 2019). Additionally, how their ability to metabolise breastmilk changed. Infants born pre-term often experience gut issues due to underdeveloped... guts and long courses of antibiotics. This longitudinal case-control study observed four lots of faecal (poo) samples from two groups of preterm babies. The case group was supplemented with Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus (‘good’ bacteria), known as Bif/Lacto, with the first enteral feed, while the control group didn’t receive probiotic supplementation. It was found that after supplementation of Bif/Lacto, preterm infants had more Bifidobacterium and a lower abundance of pathobionts (gut bacteria that has the potential to cause damage and sickness). Additionally, the supplemented preterm infants were excreting more faecal acetate. This meant they were able to metabolise breastmilk, which the authors attributed to the higher prevalence of Bifidobacterium. This is promising research to add to the picture. Potentially in the future, probiotics will be implemented regularly to preterm infants to improve their gut microbiota, to represent that of full-term infants. If you'd like to read more about how a baby's gut microbiome develops and what influence a mother can have, read more in my new blog https://growthspectrum.com.au/how-does-your-babys-gut-micr/ @lefabuleuxcombatdethiago See more

12.01.2022 Hi ladies! Are you a bit confused about using a pump to ‘drain’ the breasts? I remember the exhaustion, confusion and pain in the days following my son's birth. I had no idea what pump to look for, how to use it effectively and what parts were compatible with what! Looking back, I did so many things wrong, simply because I DIDN"T KNOW! This is why I'm passionate about educating PREGNANT women BEFORE they reach the postpartum stage and through frustration, exhaustion, overw...helm and lack of support, end up stopping their breastfeeding journey prematurely. So to help give you a little bit of info about how to pump effectively, here is an effective exercise to promote milk supply! Thanks to @cherishedparentingservices 1Start with your pump on ‘massage/letdown’ mode. 2When a steady flow of milk begins, switch to ‘express’ mode. 3When the flow slows or stops, head back to ‘massage/letdown’ mode and wait for 3-5 mins. To increase supply, drain the breasts at least 8 times in 24 hours. Sometimes it may take a few days to notice a difference. If you have any questions on breastfeeding and supply, feel free to DM me! I also have a code for @haakaa pumps at the moment which is GROWTHSPECTRUM10 to get 10% off your cart! See more

10.01.2022 Mama's we are totally preparing you for your breastfeeding journey with these amazing products from Haakaa & the Yummy Mummy Food Company 1. HAAKAA! The On-the-Go Travel Set is new & features sought-after milk storage bags. It features all the essentials for mums to express when they're out & about. Mum life can be really busy, & not many have time to be stuck on the couch with an electric pump, so hopefully this set gives mums some freedom to fit expressing into their li...ves rather than fitting their lives around their pump! The Ladybug is AMAZING! You just pop it in your bra (it attaches to your nipple with light suction) & it catches your letdown, or any leakage throughout the day. The very gentle suction is designed to draw the milk out, & is more about catching that leakage rather than wasting it in a nursing pad. 2. YUMMY MUMMY FOOD COMPANY Mama's, you want nutritious foods & hydrating drinks around you when you breastfeed. What better way to do that than with products that contain herbs & ingredients that may enhance your breastmilk supply when you are doing all the other breastfeeding practices to boost your supply (demand feeding, skin to skin, correct latch etc). 09.01.2022 Strengthen your Pelvic Floor What causes weakened pelvic floor muscles? Being pregnant and giving birth stretches the muscles of your pelvic floor the muscles that keep your bladder closed. Weakened pelvic floor muscles can’t stop your bladder from leaking. This leaking happens mostly when you cough, sneeze, lift or exercise. ... Will they get stronger by themselves? No. You’ll need to help your pelvic floor muscles get strong again. If you don’t strengthen the muscles after each baby, you’re likely to wet yourself more often when you reach middle age. How can I prevent this happening to me? Always squeeze and hold your pelvic floor muscles before you sneeze, cough or lift. Don’t go to the toilet ‘just in case’ this trains your bladder to want to empty more often. Empty your bladder completely when you go to the toilet. Avoid constipation by drinking plenty of fluids (preferably water) and fibre-rich foods. Don’t lift heavy loads too often. Don’t do bouncing exercises. The Parenting Bundle includes ecourses highlighting the importance of pelvic health from thehappypelvis , and other pelvic floor advocates including FitRight and Taryn Watson’s video series about the first 6 weeks postpartum (which you also find in my Postnatal Roadmap Membership as well!) The Parenting Bundle includes a huge range of courses available (including MY Getting Ready for Labour Masterclass!), there’s definitely something for you in here, all at a ridiculous 98% off! 09.01.2022 Vitamin D is known as the ‘sunshine’ vitamin, it’s so crucial that it actually regulates the activity of over 200 genes! Sun exposure accounts for ~90% of Vit D in the body in individuals who don’t take supplements, this means food isn’t a significant enough source for you to rely on. People with dark skin may require 3-6 x more time in the sun to produce the same amount of vitamin D as a very pale person. A study from South Carolina, a latitude where it ...is possible to produce Vit D from the sun due to the sunny environment, looked at the Vit D status of pregnant women. In that study, Vit D deficiency was seen in 67% of Caucasian women, 81% of Hispanic women, and 98% of African American women. This demonstrates the high prevalence of Vit D deficiencies within pregnant women! How does Vit D translate to breastmilk? Breastmilk is SUPPOSED to have enough Vit D in it for you and baby, but if you are not producing enough Vit D, there’s not enough to transfer to breastmilk. A great way to ensure both you and your baby are receiving enough Vit D is supplementation for mum this will be transferred to breastmilk and then to your bub! If you’re curious about your Vit D status and how much you and/or your baby might need to supplement, reach out to me via DM or book a 20min free call with the link below: https://calendly.com/growthspectrum/20min See more

09.01.2022 Did you know that just 7% of Australian adults and 5% of children meet the recommended guidelines for 5 serves of veggies each day? In fact, the average Australian eats only half as much vegetables as they should! Yet, the largest proportion of food waste in NSW a whopping 33% comes from fresh produce. Reducing food waste while enjoying a more sustainable diet packed with vegetables is the basis for better health, reduces the risk of chronic disease and ensures a ...healthy food supply for future generations. With the Coronavirus pandemic we are making more meals at home than ever. It’s true that right now, we all want to feel connected with our family and our community. "Try for 5", is an annual week long campaign powered by Nutrition Australia encouraging Australians to increase their vegetable consumption to the recommended five serves per day. Doesn't sound too difficult does it? Tell your friends and family to celebrate and try for 5 serves of fresh, frozen, canned, dried or juiced veggies! How do I make a healthy plate? Vegetables - Increase your intake of non-starchy vegetables. The more colour, the better! Use healthy plant-based oils and fats, limiting the use of saturated fats and butter. Choose from a variety of seasonal fruits. Choose whole-grain varieties. Choose lean meat & poultry. Use herbs and spices in place of salt in cooking. What 5 Veggies are you going to try to incorporate today? Information supplied by @nutritionaustralia

08.01.2022 Did you know that more than 35,000 women in Australia develop gestational diabetes every year? The incidence rate in our country is highest among women aged 3034 years. Gestational diabetes is diabetes diagnosed for the first time during pregnancy (gestation). Like other types of diabetes, gestational diabetes (GDM) affects how your cells use sugar (glucose). Gestational diabetes causes high blood sugar that can affect your pregnancy and your baby's health. What can you ...do if you are diagnosed? Once gestational diabetes has been diagnosed, you will need to start adjusting your diet and adopting a healthy eating plan, performing regular physical activity and weight management for those women who have had a weight gain above of what is expected. The optimal dietary prescription would be a diet that provides adequate nutrition to support fetal and maternal well-being, while maintaining blood sugar levels within the normal range, and achieving appropriate weight gain in pregnancy. All diets should be individualized for pregnant women with GDM, however, it is recommended to follow a low saturated-fat, low-sugar, high GI diet; it is also advisable to: Avoid foods and drinks containing substantial amounts of sugar, like soft drinks, fruit juices, cakes and biscuits. The use of artificial sweeteners is preferable. Include some carbohydrate in every meal and snacks, ideally high in fibre. Try to limit the amount of fat you eat, particularly saturated fat; it's preferable to use fats like canola, olive and polyunsaturated oils and margarines, avocados and unsalted nuts The image below, gives you an example of some simple food swaps that increase the fibre you eat and turn your food into a lower GI option so that your blood sugars don't spike. Book a 20min FREE consult with me if you want to understand more about low GI foods and how to make healthier swaps in your diet as you go through pregnancy. https://calendly.com/growthspectrum/20min .

06.01.2022 Like most mums, I spent my first pregnancy alternating between visions of snuggling my newborn, and battling anxiety over how difficult and painful! childbirth could really be Not once did I consider the recovery processnot even when other women described it as the fourth trimester. I wish I’d listened. Childbirth recovery gave me a crash course in all sorts of problems I’d never heard of (not to mention pain in body parts I didn’t even know I had): tearing, prolapse..., incontinence, infections, nutrition depletion, and more. And perhaps the biggest secret of them all? Breastfeeding was hard Sore, cracked nipples, anyone? Looking back, it would have been so much easier if I’d had somebody to guide me through those early months, instead of learning everything I could have done AFTER it was too late. There are some incredible courses on offer to help you learn everything you need to know about Breastfeeding: All you need to know about breastfeeding The Birth Coach Breastfeeding Basics Course Lucy Ruddle IBCLC Breastfeeding Our Babies mommysbundle And while we're not underestimating the challenge that childbirth is to go through, Best Birth Co. have incredible Positive Birth Affirmation Cards to get your mind focused on how powerful you and your body are to birth your child, giving you the confidence when you need it most All of this plus more is available right now in The Parenting Bundle which I am so grateful to be a part of! 06.01.2022 Real Mama Story from @saracelinaa "On my 8 week checkup my doctor told me -wow, you got your body back fast as if I had lost it at some point. I’ve shared my body twice, but it was never taken from me, it was never lost. My body has been stretched and cut open, it suffered bursts and have been sown back together but it’s always been my body. If anything my pregnancies have made me more I touch with my body. . .... It got me thinking about the way we talk about bodies after a pregnancy -how to get your body back or -when will you be back to normal.... what is that!? Why do we talk about this like we loose ourselves when we become pregnant? And back to normal? What is not normal about a pregnancy or how we look after it? . I guess what people really mean by this is when will you look like you did post pregnancy and my answer to that is never, I’ve got scars and loose skin that is my new normal, but it’s still my old body " . Mamas you are powerful and your body goes through so much! Tag a mama that needs to hear this!

Vitamin B12: is crucial for neurological function Selenium: deficiency is also linked to a higher risk of postpartum depression Vitamin D: Low serum vitamin D level might be associated with depressive symptoms Iron: Low levels have been associated with behavioural abnormalities, impaired mood and cognition Zinc: Can influence serotonin uptake. 02.01.2022 Prepare for your fourth trimester now (not once you’re smack bang in the middle of life as a new mother). The truth is that your journey as a new mother doesn’t end with labour. The fourth trimester is the six-week period immediately after labour, and when it comes to the health and wellness of you and your baby, the fourth trimester is just as important as the first three trimesters of your pregnancy. Why should you focus on your fourth trimester? ... Most pregnancy support focuses on making it through your labour, and fails to successfully equip you to handle the first six-weeks post-birth. Your best safeguard against post-birth overwhelm is to educate yourself on your fourth trimester now. There is so much to learn, handle and heal post-birth... but you don’t have to figure it out all by yourself. The Postpartum ebook is your go-to guide for confidently preparing to navigate the fourth trimester as a new mum. In my Postpartum e-guide (which is just $7 for a limited time only!) you'll get 36 wisdom-drenched pages covering topics like: The key fourth trimester challenges and complications nobody is talking about (and how you can properly prepare for them). The science of the hormonal rollercoaster your body will be going through post-birth (yep your hormones will still be going wild even after labour!) and how you can best care for yourself during this time. What postpartum care often forgets and neglects (but that you won’t!) How to support healthy, safe and sustainable weight loss post-birth (without affecting your breastmilk supply, starving, or subjecting yourself to a restrictive diet). AND SO MUCH MORE! 01.01.2022 Type 2 Diabetes is commonly associated with lifestyle and diet behaviours however, this is not always the case for gestational diabetes! Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a form of diabetes exclusively experienced by some women during pregnancy. Risk factors include: - Family history of type 2 diabetes or GDM - PCOS... - GDM in prior pregnancy - Aged over 40 years GDM is diagnosed by using an oral glucose tolerance test, performed at a pathology lab. You may have heard of the *awful* sugar drink many mothers have had to have this is to test for GDM! Fasting blood glucose levels are taken, then in the hours following the drinking of the sugary drink, blood glucose levels are taken again. If your body is not metabolising glucose (sugar) correctly, your glucose level will be above normal and hence GDM will be diagnosed. More than anything, GDM is frustrating, inconvenient and pretty unfair with all the other things a pregnant woman must experience. However, it can be managed and generally goes away following pregnancy. It’s important to remember that GDM doesn’t mean NO cake, NO carbs and NO sugar rather, it’s about amounts and timing. I have a blog about gestational diabetes if you would like to learn a bit more, head to the blog link on my website https://growthspectrum.com.au/gestational-diabetes-and-pre/ For support during your GDM journey send me a DM to book in a FREE 20min discovery call.

01.01.2022 Vitamin D: How much does it matter in pregnancy and breastfeeding? Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is essential for the absorption of calcium and is involved mostly in bone health and metabolism, but increasingly, research is showing the importance in immune health and allergies. Given the few dietary sources,... lack of sun exposure in some parts of the world, and/or covering up due to skin cancer concerns or religious/cultural practices, Vitamin D deficiency is very common among people. Supplementation is required in many cases during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in order to meet the body’s need during pregnancy and to provide enough to a baby in their first year of life Ensure you incorporate good sources of Vitamin D, like fish oil, salmon and sardines and eggs into your diet. For vegetarians, mushrooms can contain small amounts of Vitamin D2 if grown under UVB light. You can also look for dietary products, fortified foods and nutritional supplements To understand how much Vitamin D you may need, talk to an Accredited Practicing Dietitian such as myself. Click the link below for a FREE 20 minute discovery call with me! https://calendly.com/growthspectrum/20min
