25.01.2022 It's impossible to be mad at an early weekend shift at work when this is the view that greets you. #hobart #discovertasmania #westhobart #saturday #morningmotivation #sunrise #beekeeping #mornings #weekend #thunderstorms

23.01.2022 Checking our sites in the Florentine this week. We were called to evacuate these bees first in early January which we did. The hives were heavy with honey then and the leatherwood was still flowering and we had hoped that this new site, nicknamed 'the Florentine fairy glen' would hold enough food for the bees and be far enough away from the fire to protect them. The fire jumped containment lines and, this time in late January/ early February, we were called to move them again. We are so relieved that we did because, 2 days later, this is what was left. We have been so lucky that none of our bees have been lost, but it will be a long and difficult winter for them as they were unable to forage for most of summer and their stores are running low.

23.01.2022 Merry chirstmas from the grumpy bee family. #bees #poppies #chistmas

23.01.2022 Horrible weather today but the bees are still out at the botanical gardens #royalhobartbotanicalgardens #beelife #bees #autumn #tasmania

22.01.2022 At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them. Wishing you and your family a safe, reflective Anzac day. #anzacday #sunrise #dawn #hobart #westhobart #lestweforget

21.01.2022 Ah yes, spring! Time -- once again -- for me to stalk and startle bees as they forage. Scared the beejesus out of this poor girl. #beelife #beekeeper #beepuns #beesofinstagram #spring #foraging #bugs #bugsofinstagram #flowerstagram #blossoms #appleblossom #sorry

17.01.2022 We knew this year would be a very difficult one, but it has been so much worse than we thought.

16.01.2022 Happy hump day! Wave goodbye to the beginning of the week and hello to the end of it. #bees #humpday #artichokeflowers #letitflower

16.01.2022 Spring means swarming season. If you see a swarm land it might not need to be collected; the queen might just need a little rest. Wait an hour and then call a local beekeeper. #spring #beekeeper #beelife #swarms

16.01.2022 Bees love forget-me-nots which is lucky because it has taken over most of our flower beds! Spring is a sensitive time for bees. Their winter food supplies have dwindled and they need to get out and forage, but they don't fly when it rains, in strong winds or under heavy cloud cover (honestly, it's a wonder tasmania has any bees at all!). You can help them by planting flowering plants that bloom in early spring.

14.01.2022 The major draw back of temperate rainforests, from a bee keeping perspective, is that they get incredibly cold. This weekend we had to rush to Mount Field to get our girls out of the snow and to a warmer, more bee-friendly environment. Bees can survive in the snow; they cluster together and snuggle for warmth, taking it in turns to be in the middle, much like penguins. They prefer a warmer climate though.

14.01.2022 Boss Ross, hard at work making bee hives.

09.01.2022 It's starting to get a little too cold for bees but hobart does always put on a show #rhbg200 #autumn #royalhobartbotanicalgardens #tasmania #discovertasmania #dateday #RTBG200

08.01.2022 My advice for beating Monday blues is honey and lemon pancakes. You can even pretend it's medicine if you want.

08.01.2022 Mid seasons (autumn and spring) can be very difficult times for bees to find food. This is partly because the weather is not great and also because there are less plants in flower. You can help them out by letting plants flower before cutting them back for winter. #ivy #flowers #letitflower #autumn #bees #gardening #gardenforbees #foraging

08.01.2022 Bees love hellebore -- rain, not so much.

08.01.2022 Due to the decrease in supply and the increase in demand we have been forced to increase some of our prices. The new prices are now $9 for 500g plastic jars, $10 for 500g glass jars, $16 for 1kg tubs, $11 for 20+ manuka in plastic jars, and $12 for plastic. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but we hope that these prices will stay fixed and there will be no other catastrophic weather events in the near future. #newprice #markets #bushfire #beekeeping #honey

07.01.2022 Dear Friends Our online store is up and running https://www.grumpybee.com.au/ and we hope this will give many of you a contactless alternative for buying our products and keeping in touch with us. We have only put 250g and 500g options into the store for now and are working on a 1kg plastic jar option for the future, depending on whether we have any breakages or leaks with the smaller bottles. We have turned off the express post option in the checkout because it seems the n...ext day guarantee offered by Auspost is a spurious claim at the moment, there arent sufficient freight flights out of Tassie to support the claim and the local post shops are overwhelmed with parcels due to the massive increase in online shopping. Regular parcel post is the only option we have enabled. We are new to this and still learning but as far as we can see, postage per unit of weight becomes steadily cheaper up to a weight of 5kg so consider purchasing more but less often to minimize the postage cost. In time we will look at home delivery in the greater Hobart area but this will be to reduce delivery times only. Although we feel we have thoroughly tested the online store, please be patient if we have a few glitches and also feel free to give your feedback whether positive or negative both on the functionality of the online store and the quality of our products through our facebook link. Thank you all for your continued support and stay safe. The Grumpy Bee Team See more

05.01.2022 Today is world bee day. Bees are essential to human food production and survival, but they are under serious threat from pesticide use, veroa mites, mass colony collapse and a whole host of other issues. Today, and every day we do all we can to protect honey bees. You can help by planting your garden in such a way that something flowers all year round. Proteas are an excellent winter- flowering option #worldbeeday #proteas #savethebees #bees #bugs #conservation #macrophotography #flowers #gardening

03.01.2022 For the last few years we have been working on a very exciting project that has finally come to delicious fruition: mead! As of this Sunday we will be selling a variety of meads made the old fashioned way. Find us at our new corner stall at @farmgatemarket. Of course, we will still have honey as well.
