23.01.2022 SUPPPORTING young people with a work placement is being celebrated with specially created stickers for businesses to display. The Glenelg and Southern Grampians Local Learning and Employment Network (GSGLLEN) created 94 opportunities for high school students to learn on the job during 2020. This is a fantastic result for students in the area considering the impacts of COVID-19 and with many placements suspended or cancelled due to government restrictions. But none of the p...lacements would have been possible without the support of local businesses who provided learning, support and guidance for students wanting to get a taste of what work is like in different fields. To celebrate the businesses who volunteer to host students, the GSGLLEN had stickers designed for business owners to place in their windows so the community know they support students. The stickers will help community members identify which businesses are supportive of local students needing a ‘foot in the door’ to gain valuable on the job experience, and in turn may encourage the community to support that business. GSGLLEN executive officer Anne Murphy said it was important for businesses to be recognised for their contribution to young people’s careers pathways. We know when young people are given an opportunity to gain experience in a safe and supported environment, it helps to start to define their aspirations and career pathways, Ms Murphy said. Essentially businesses and their employees are volunteering to show a young person the ins and outs of their work but each time a student steps into their business they are being taught valuable life and work lessons that will stay with them, she said. The stickers will be distributed in the coming weeks to businesses who have supported the LLEN with Structured Workplace Learning opportunities, School Based apprenticeships and work experience placements. When you see a sticker in the window, it would be great if you were able to support this business like they have supported young people, Ms Murphy said. See more

12.01.2022 Massive announcement for Year 12 VCE students today! This has been such a challenging year for all Victorian students, particularly our year 12s in their final ...year. Students, and parents, have been understandably concerned about the impact of Coronavirus on their VCE study scores and ATAR ranking. In a year like no other, weve responded in an unprecedented way. Today we announced that every student will be individually assessed and any adverse impacts of Coronavirus will be reflected in students final VCE study scores and ATAR ranking. In a normal year, individual students are assessed for special consideration on a case by case basis. This year, schools will provide the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) with information on every single one of their students. Schools will be asked to rank their students on both where they are at now and where they would have been had it not been for COVID-19 -- and why. Data will be collected from every school across the state including on previous assessments and used alongside the GAT and exams to adjust VCE scores accordingly. This may include assessing the individual impact of coronavirus on each student, including school closures, direct impacts on the health of a student, students dealing with substantial extra family responsibilities, ongoing issues with remote learning and mental health challenges. These reforms will reach every Year 12 VCE student in the state, ensuring the experiences of the class of 2020 are factored into their results. Every VCE student can go in to their exams with the confidence knowing they will not be disadvantaged by Coronavirus. I want every VCE student to keep focusing on their upcoming exams and have the motivation to strive to do their best in those final year examinations! We are doing everything we can to support you.

06.01.2022 It shouldn't matter whether you're doing VCE or VCAL. If you've worked hard and done your best you deserve to succeed. Which is why we're making things a bit ...easier for Victorian students. Year 12 VCAL students who've given it their best but couldn't complete every unit because of the pandemic, will be able to get credit by the VCAA so they can gain their VCAL certificate. And if you're a school VET student who couldn't finish your studies as planned we're giving you a guaranteed enrolment at TAFE or a dual provider next year to complete your course, and waiving your VET tuition fees for 2021. We're also extending the time for VET studies until 18 December giving students an extra month to finish, and have it recognised on their VCAL certificate too. There's no denying that this year has been a challenge for students right across the state. But especially for those who've missed out on the practical, hands-on learning they need to succeed. These students, and the important skills they're learning, will be vital to helping Victoria recover from this pandemic. And we'll support them every step of the way.

03.01.2022 The Victorian Education Minister, James Merlino, is encouraging principals, teachers, families and students to have their say on remote and flexible learning, to gain insights into how our education system can be improved as a result of the unprecedented experience of COVID 19. Feedback is being collected via a community consultation survey and will help the government understand what lessons were learned during remote and flexible learning, and the challenges or opportunitie...s to consider for strengthening the future of school education in Victoria. The survey complements an independent analysis being undertaken across the government, independent and Catholic school sectors, and a Summit to be held during July with students, school leaders and peak associations. The GSGLLEN in partnership with the Glenelg Beyond the Bell Local Action Group (LAG) sees this as a great opportunity for the experience of the schools, families, students and other stakeholders in our region to be heard from a rural and remote perspective. We are therefore writing to you to encourage you to participate in one of two ways: 1. Complete the department online survey yourself. You are able to provide your input individually here to the key question What can be learned from the period of remote and flexible learning to strengthen school education in Victoria? by clicking on the enclosed link https://engage.vic.gov.au/lessons-remote-and-flexible-learn. Responses can be made anonymously; the survey closes on 30 June. 2. Take part in a collated response from the region If you would prefer to contribute your thoughts to a group response or dont have time for a full response but would like to contribute, GSG LLEN in partnership with the Glenelg Beyond the Bell LAG is offering to collate contributions from across Glenelg and Southern Grampians region. The response will be a true representation of feedback received rather than a particular LLEN/ Beyond the Bell position, edited only to fit the word limit (8,000 characters). Information will only be reported as a whole, with individual responses remaining confidential. If you would like to provide input to the group response, please click on this survey monkey link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/R2NX6DS The survey monkey will close at 11.55pm on Sunday 28 June.
