21.01.2022 At GT Hardwood, Staff training is an ongoing exercise. Like most industries there are new ideas to keep up with and new things to try out. Machining of Hardwood is not easy. By the sheer fact that it’s hard, makes it an interesting product to machine. Regularly we spend a few days on training and we go through every step of the process in meticulous detail to fine tune our programme.

20.01.2022 95% of our HARDWOOD is sold to owner builders. 4 or 5 times a day I speak to people about their requirements for an upcoming project. Most of them aren’t quite sure what they need. And it can be a bit daunting wading through all the options. Our SE QLD Hardwood is very Durable and is a great building material to work with.... We can help you get the right Hardwood for your project See more

09.01.2022 GT Hardwood Sawmill Tallowwood Decking. You don’t see Tallowwood Decking being offered for sale all that often. We run it regularly. It’s a SE QLD Durability Class One Hardwood Timber so it’s ideal in an outdoor full weather installation. It’s a naturally oily timber. Potentially it could last forever with minimal maintenance. Years ago most of your window and door sills were machined from Tallowwood. It makes magnificent decking. It’s a bit more honey in colour as compared to the Blackbutt. If you’re chasing durability, look no further than the Tallowwood. The board you are seeing run today is our wide board 163x27

08.01.2022 GT Hardwood Sawmill. Today we’re processing a few Green Off Saw orders where the client has specified the timber to be in dark red colours. It gives you a fair idea of what Red looks like up close and just off the saw. The timber is abnormally wet looking as the saws have water sprayed on them to keep things cool. There’s a lot of paper work and quality checking along the way when we do GOS orders. If one piece doesn’t this order it might suit another we’re also workin...g on. This particular order specified a few 92x92, some larger appearance grade posts, some heavy duty Grey Gum Bearers at 6 meters long plus a few other bits and pieces all to be supplied in Red. The order looks like a sub frame and the posts for a new hardwood deck. The posts in most cases for this application would have been specified as F22 appearance grade. To achieve this, we’ll have to put up a few logs and hopefully a couple of them will open up good enough for the appearance grade posts. You never know what’s inside a hardwood log till you open it up. All the remaining timber not used for the order is then stripped up, dried and sent downstream to be machined into Red Hardwood Decking or Panelling. Any extra timber cut for the order is put back immediately and cut into board stock for our Dry Mill. Some of those wild highly coloured red boards you see coming down the line will probably find themselves into our Feature Grade Decking and Panel in their next life. See more

07.01.2022 I’m hearing way too many stories coming from our clients who are about to replace outdoor structures. I’m being asked daily How should I do it this time round Some of the issues are from shoddy workmanship and some of it’s from using the wrong products in the first place. If you’re thinking about using Pine, read the fine print, It may not last as long as you think.

07.01.2022 The Sawmill building that we’re working out of today is now 100 years old. Quite obviously it was built in the day when we did things properly. Testament to the good people who have worked in and around this sawmilling operation for last 100 years. This year hasn’t been a good year so far. With the Fires early in 2020 and then the Covid 19 thing running amuck, we ended up a with a big heap of people out of work for one reason or another. We’re seem to be allowing to many low quality imports to come into this country and some of it shouldn’t be allowed in. We can grow more than enough Hardwood in this country than we know what to do with. We should take a long hard look at where we’re heading. Allowing more & more of our manufacturing to go off shore is only putting us out of work.

06.01.2022 My Grandfather Bill Grant passed away in 1999 at the age of 92. Jim Bowden from The Australian Timber Magazine did a three page story on the life and times of Bill Grant. I’ll read the article to you word for word. It’ll give you a bit of an insight on how we did it back in the old days.

05.01.2022 Most of our Sawmill believe it or not is controlled by PLC’s. Industrial Computers that from time to time get out sync for one reason or another. Quite often we have to re program them and get them back on track. Because we’re a Multi Specie Sawmill, we run multiple sizing programs throughout the Sawmill. The reason we do this is because some species of timber that we mill for our drying operation are sawn to different sizing schedules to allow for their specific drying characteristics. In this movie we’re checking our sizing schedules in our Twin Saw Log Edger.
