25.01.2022 Our "Approaches to Newcastle" survey area will provide updated data for navigational charting which is a very good thing, given its location the notorious Hunter region. The history of ships wrecking along the Hunter coast date all the way back to 1800, when the Norfolk, a wooden sloop built in 1798 was lost at Pirate Point in Newcastle. Since then, dozens of vessels have been lost, run aground or sunk in the area One of the most notorious incidents was the 2007 groundi...ng of the Japanese owned ship, Pasha Bulker, which ran aground 8th June during a storm. 300mm of rainfall pummeled the area, 9 people lost their lives, 10,000 homes flooded and 5,000 cars were written off - causing over $1 billion of damage. The ship beached on the morning of Friday 8 June, just before the height of the storm. An intense rescue operation successfully recovered all 22 crew onboard, and the ship remained aground for 25 days while salvage attempts were made. Thankfully no one onboard were seriously injured and the vessel was able to be recovered, repaired and renamed - eventually returning to Newcastle as MV Drake 10 years later! The footage really must be seen to be believed.. Reference Photos: Visit Newcastle

24.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW. ? That Guardian Geomatics have developed our very own cloud-based software for tracking survey line data & progress? Survey information is uploaded straight from the vessel, almost in real time! Data is sent to the cloud via high speed transfer and displayed using our software, as an image of the survey area. The completed sections of the area are mapped out, line by line, as the project progresses. ... This is a simple way for the team - as well as our customers - to stay up to date with our operations and track how much ground (or ocean floor!) has been covered each day. All of the different colours paint a picture, with depth, ridges, wrecks and contours all visibly represented within the colour gradients. Here is the latest update from the Offshore Guardian, working over in Stockton Bight, Newcastle for Approaches to Newcastle. The vessel marker shows the Offshore Guardian alongside at Port Stephen for today's port call - pretty cool! It's fascinating to watch these projects come to life on our computer screens! 02.01.2022 This video was taken during the mobilization of our HIPP "Approaches to Newcastle" Project. Those two big yellow things are our very own Tide Buoys - technology that was designed & constructed in house, with many of the parts 3D printed, right here in our office! The tide buoys, along with current meters will assist the team to develop a tidal model for depth reduction, and establish connection to AusHydroid. The SI 1001 survey encompasses an inshore transit route that is passage for thousands of vessels in and out of The Port of Newcastle. Plans for the acquired data include updates to electronic and paper charts of this high traffic area, last surveyed in 1972.
