In a sense not unlike some of the tech startups to follow, the idea started at home and was developed in the spare room and the garage. While it seems unfathomable in 2020 that once upon a time support services would need to be ...Continue reading

07.01.2022 DRC HEARING LOOKS AT PREPARATION, ISOLATION AND ACCESS TO INFORMATION 19/08/2020 On the second day of the COVID-19 hearing, themes of preparation, isolation, loneliness and communication difficulties dominated the evidence. The day began with a consideration of emergency preparedness plans for people with disability. Associate Professor Michelle Villeneuve from the University of Sydney gave evidence which noted the responsibility of multiple stakeholders in disaster response.... She suggested that people with disability, service providers, advocacy organisations and government each have a role. The COVID-19 Planning Resource for People with Disability, developed in collaboration with the Department of Health, may be useful to providers in considering their role see link). Many witnesses spoke of difficulties accessing information about the pandemic. This was particularly pronounced for people with intellectual disability, people with limited access to technology and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Witnesses said this was exacerbated by constantly changing information and government orders, and information often not being in accessible formats. The majority of witnesses spoke of the isolation and loneliness that came with the pandemic. For people living in disability accommodation, restrictions on visitors were felt in particular. For people who were immunocompromised, some had to restrict the number of people they could see face-to-face. On violence and abuse, evidence echoed yesterdays on the consequences of people being locked down with their abusers both women and children with disability. Several witnesses noted risk of abuse was heightened as natural safeguards had been reduced, such as visits from family and advocates. Several witnesses spoke about events moving online during lockdown, increasing accessibility for many people with disability. http://ow.ly/y41Q50B4936 See more
