24.01.2022 Guided Fishing DownUnder is fully booked or unavailable September school holidays and until 14th October! Thanks to all who are booked in and will be heading out with me in the near future. While on the topic of bookings and availability in the next few months. - For Fitzroy River estuary fishing before the barra season closure, the 21st October is the only reasonable tide left. There are a few good options in November and December, with the focus for these estuary trips retu...rning to king threadfin. - For saratoga and coastal (weather dependant) trips there is availability for 15th-20th October and a couple of other options in November and December. - For February 2021 targeting barra there are only 3 days with good tides left: 8-9th and 19th, so get in contact if you were thinking of booking in a trip with Guided Fishing DownUnder for barra season opening in 2021. Thanks again for the amazing support! Nathan Guided Fishing DownUnder
23.01.2022 Last fishing day for Tim before we break camp and head back tomorrow. The day consisted of heaps more stunning river vistas and outback wildlife all while targeting wild southern saratoga on fly. Best fish for the day was a solid 83cm model.
23.01.2022 Ryan was keen to boat a king on lure today and was rewarded after his 250th cast with a solid 1.24m fish. This was followed up with a fish around 1.1m released at the boatside after another good fight. Ryan’s best fish came from a lure he recently scored for Father’s Day. Lucky lure that one! 22.01.2022 Out with Dan again and the Fitzroy served up another top day including a solid blue threadfin, several fun sized king threadfin and a bit of bycatch all on lures. Fishing the Fitzroy Visit Capricorn Professional Fishing Instructors & Guides Association
21.01.2022 Garry is up with the family fishing the fitzroy during the school holidays. His sons had a ball today with a few fish caught including a king threadfin for young Will coming in at 1.12m. Fishing the Fitzroy Visit Capricorn Professional Fishing Instructors & Guides Association
21.01.2022 Some spectacular snaps of Fitzroy delta wildlife by daniele cagnazzi who was out on the river with Guided Fishing DownUnder recently. There is so much to explore for those willing to spend a bit of time on the water and a sense of adventure and open mind. Visit Capricorn Explore Rockhampton
21.01.2022 It’s been an enjoyable few days on holidays fishing the Hinchinbrook Channel as part of the ANSA Queensland AGM hosted by Hinchinbrook Sportfishing Club. Lots of good memories including Amanda catching her first jack, which was a solid fish that fought hard and brother Luke taking out longest barra for the weekend and nailing a respectable 68cm fingermark on lure. Looking forward to guiding clients onto king, barra and saratoga in the month ahead and lending a hand with the Fitzroy River Barra Bash bought to you by Frenchville Sports Club
20.01.2022 Had Gerry and Matt on the water today and Matt got to tangle with a 1.18m threadfin as well as a few sharks! Another top day Fishing the Fitzroy with the net free zone paying dividends for domestic tourists lining up to Visit Capricorn
20.01.2022 Sunday done right for Damien and his two young lads. We did some prawning, fishing and crabbing. The prawns played the game with nearly a bucket of prawns. The fishing was slow at first, but the change of tide also brought a change of fortune with a massive 1.2m model playing up well before being landed. This was followed by a fun sized fish landed by Noah. While there were a few muddies in the pots unfortunately they were a bit small! Damien is GM at Frenchville Sports Club ...Ltd and we spent a bit of time chatting about the upcoming Fitzroy River Barra Bash bought to you by Frenchville Sports Club. While the barra didn’t play the game today, the temps should be a bit warmer in a months time ready for the competition. Looking forward to seeing how all the anglers go - keep an eye out for the Guided Fishing DownUnder boat if you are competing as we will be out and about taking happy snaps of the event! 20.01.2022 Filleting tips for your big king threadfin There have been a few requests on how to fillet the larger king threadfin for best results. This post steps out what I do when filleting a larger king at home to make the most of a fish that has large bone nodules throughout. In the Fitzroy Net Free zone there are ever increasing numbers of trophy sized king threadfin, which is exciting to observe. Most fishing charters with Guided Fishing DownUnder targeting king in winter result in... a big king landed. My general rule for these magnificent sporting and eating fish is to move onto something else once a client lands a fish or two over the 1.1m mark given survival is dubious over this size with the species suffering barotrauma like symptoms. A king over 1.1m provides 10-14 meals for two people and one fish is plenty. Those targeting big king should carry enough ice to take a fish, even if they plan on catch and release. To release a fish in poor condition that is unlikely to survive under the guise of catch and release is blatantly disrespectful to the fish. The steps I go through when filleting these fish for maximum yield is provided below, with photos for reference. 1. Bleed and Iki Jime the fish. 2. Cut the fish just behind the second dorsal and anal fin and crack the spine. This will make it a lot easier to fit the fish in your esky. 3. Ice down the fish until you are ready to fillet it back at home. 4. Take the conventional fillets off each side and portion it up as desired. 5. Cut the tail off the peduncle shank and descale it. This section has the large nodules and is best baked or cooked on the BBQ to deliver the most meat without wastage. 6. Remove the skin and take the small fillet out from behind the eye. This is a bit difficult but one of the best cuts. 7. Cut out the wings and either scale and BBQ as-is or cut out the wing fillets. These wing fillets are my favourite part of the fish and are usually cooked fresh in butter on the frying pan within a day or two. 8. Scavenge any meat missed, including in behind the gill plate where the cut from the conventional fillet was taken. These off-cuts are perfect for fish tacos. I hope this helps with the next big king you keep and remember when fishing in the Fitzroy to take a feed and not a fridge full. Cheers Nathan Guided Fishing DownUnder
19.01.2022 The fish waited right till the end for Malcolm and his parents, Mac and Jan today. Their patience was finally rewarded with a 1.17m king threadfin just before calling it a day! Today was the last of the dedicated king threadfin charters for the year. The quality of threadies this year in the Fitzroy has been fantastic and who knows what next winter will bring for clients wanting to land a metre plus king. With spring around the corner the barra will become more prevalent for ...the next nine months and the bigger threadfin will feature less regularly. Can’t wait to get out on the water and help clients chase a few barra. Most of the good tides in September and October are already booked out, so it should be a top few months! 18.01.2022 The Fitzroy delivered Paul a solid 86cm barra today before his flight back to Brisbane this afternoon. Fishing the Fitzroy Visit Capricorn Professional Fishing Instructors & Guides Association
17.01.2022 An 80cm Fitzroy River chrome slab for Andrew and a bucket of prawns to match. Now all Andrew needs is a few cold ales and he is set! His good wife Anna shouted him a day on the water and will also benefit from the catch. Fishing the Fitzroy Visit Capricorn Explore Rockhampton Professional Fishing Instructors & Guides Association
15.01.2022 Another PB day on a Guided Fishing DownUnder charter. This time for Andrew, who picked up a fantastic 1.27m king on a small hardbody. It put up a stellar fight before finally being netted. A good day in all for Andrew, Brett and Vic who are up for a few days fishing on their own now. Vic also landed a fun sized threadfin and they went home with a feed of prawn to top off a good day. 10.01.2022 Enjoyable time with Tim checking out the Fitzroy.
10.01.2022 Father and son duo, Rob and Cody had an sensational time with the Fitzroy threadfin today. A fun sized thready early helped settle the nerves and was followed by a cracking 1.37m model that ran Cody around the park before finally being subdued. We explored a few other parts of the river after that before picking up a couple of kilos of banana prawn and calling it a day. 10.01.2022 Two more enjoyable days with Tim taking in the natural beauty of the Aussie bush and catching a few southern saratoga. Tim even caught a couple land based on fly, which is an art in itself having to pick the casting lanes and watch the back cast on the vegetation.
09.01.2022 Back on the Fitzroy after time on the water supporting research in Gladstone and the fish behaved well. Matt tied onto a solid 1.2m king early that ran him around the park. Later in the day Matt found a fun sized threadfin that was picked up on shallow hardbody. Bit of bycatch also released boatside. Fishing the Fitzroy Visit Capricorn
08.01.2022 Update: REBOOKED. Thanks for the interest! A rare opportunity has arisen for you to secure a three day charter on the first weekend of barra season opening in 2021! Friday 5th to Sunday the 7th February has recently been made available due to the client who booked it suffering an injury that requires a long recovery time. The preference is to fill the spot with a single booking across the 3 days. Total cost for three full days fishing for two people is $2,550. To give you a taste of what is on offer with this opportunity, check out a selection of photos from the first week of Barra opening this year! Message the page or contact Nathan on 0400 221 055 to book this place.
06.01.2022 Last day of charters until early October today with Glenn, Charlie and Matt. Glenn picked up a solid 1.14m king to top off a good run in the last few days leading up to the neaps. All the best to those enjoying a spot of fishing out on the Fitzroy for the remainder of school holidays. 05.01.2022 After dolphin research and then a run of king threadfin charters it’s been nice to mix it up with a multi-day fly charter targeting southern saratoga with Tim. Day one started well with a stress free drive followed by an enjoyable afternoon session on the subs. Heaps of fish sighted with four landed including a solid mid 70’s model. Sexyloops
04.01.2022 More father and son teams ticking off big fish in the Fitzroy. This time Matt and Tom both joined the metre plus king threadfin club. Father Matt landed a 1.18m model and just outclassed Tom who also landed a cracking 1.14m thready. We tried to find a barra after the king were ticked off the list, but they wouldn’t play the game. 03.01.2022 Dropped in to check out the CQUniversity Australia Coastal Marine Ecosystems Research Centre (CMERC) in Gladstone today. What an amazing facility situated in Gladstone harbour, with their own pier and berths for vessels! Credit to such a forward planning university for making the long term investment into this research and learning centre. As a local CQ lad who graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in Aquatic Resource Management from CQU over two decades ago it is extremely satisfying to see our regional university continuing to invest in this critical field of science. If you are currently considering a science based degree, then check out what CQUniversity has to offer.
03.01.2022 Day 2 for Rob and Cody. After a hard morning, the change in tide brought on a short hot bite. Rob had a 1.1m model snatch his lure in the shallows before proceeding to launch itself out of the water and run amok for several minutes. Cody then missed a good take and Rob was back into it with a slightly smaller version of his first king that was released boatside. Persistence really paid off for the pair today! 03.01.2022 Had a ton of laughs with Ray and Rod today. Ray landed his first baz coming in at 75cm on a shallow hardbody. About half a kilo of live prawn joined their mates at the end of day as it seemed the fish were more interested in lures than live prawn. Ray is from #Davbridge, a Queensland business who are working on the Gavial Creek bridge replacement at the moment. It’s good to see Queensland companies value adding to local economies when they win projects and spending some time with a guide while Fishing the Fitzroy
02.01.2022 More time on the water supporting dolphin research in the Fitzroy Delta with the Marine Ecology Research Centre. Today we saw and recorded heaps of dolphins and also found time for a quick fish. Kate landed a 90’s model king on a shallow hardbody, proving that neap tides are not the only time that these epic sportfish can be targeted if you know where to look. 02.01.2022 Another awesome winter day exploring our beautiful part of the world alongside the dolphin researchers with Daniele Cagnazzi’s team at the Marine Ecology Research Centre. Standouts for the day were a huge spyhop from a Snubfin that Kate caught on camera and bumping into a patch of prawn in our travels. 02.01.2022 Tim and I were fortunate enough to witness a flock of brolgas dancing on the plains on the drive home today. No outback saratoga trip is ever the same and that goes for the fishing as well as the wildlife we come across along the way! I look forward to sharing these kind of experiences on the next multi-day outback saratoga trip shared with clients targeting these ancient fish on fly or topwater lure. Get in touch if you are keen on booking in an off the grid saratoga fishing and camping trip with a difference.
01.01.2022 Ian and Bill spent a day on the water and had a ball despite the winds. Ian cashed in a Guided Fishing DownUnder gift voucher that was a present from his daughter and was gifted with a solid 1.12m king threadfin and a feisty blue threadfin.
