25.01.2022 We know it can be daunting to seek help with your vision and that's why the team in Victoria have Support Coordinators like Alex to lend a helping hand. In this specialised role, Alex acts as a single point of contact to help Clients understand and connect with various funding providers like the NDIS National Disability Insurance Scheme and My Aged Care. Learn more about Alex's role and the different funding options for Clients in this video!... [Video description: Alex is speaking to the camera from her home office]

25.01.2022 Meet Dorothy - one of our generous supporters who has kindly included a gift in her Will to Guide Dogs NSW/ACT and recently celebrated her 100th birthday! Dorothy is a force to be reckoned with and has displayed great strength and independence over her lifetime. When she was 15 years old, her father passed away while her brother was at war which left her and her mother to go through the Great Depression alone. ... Together with her mother, they paved the way for women to own a property and Dorothy went on to become one of the first women to purchase a home in Sydney. Dorothy has always had a deep love of dogs, having had many over her life including rescue dogs. And we're so grateful for her support for almost 30 years now. Congratulations Dorothy on your 100th milestone! [Image description: Dorothy is sitting on a couch with an Ambassador Dog (yellow Labrador) sitting on the floor next to her]

We don’t want to give too much away but we can promise lots of our labr-adorable Guide Dog puppies and our very talented Guide Dogs-in-training. ... Be sure to tune in as this will be a morning you don't want to miss. 23.01.2022 Sometimes the ultimate show of strength is choosing yourself. During the COVID period, Stacey struggled to find her confidence with her vision slowly deteriorating, but it was the promise she made to herself that changed her life. It was tough and I was in a deep emotional state but I slowly picked myself up. I just said to myself, ‘Yes I’m going through a lot, but I can work on myself’. I slowly picked up my own pieces with a lot of mental strength, she said. ... Stacey has Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) which means that her vision will continue to deteriorate over time. My vision is like a snowy TV reception so even when I close my eyes I can still see that snowy TV." But Stacey is determined not to let anything stop her from achieving her goals. I said to myself that I needed a highlight for 2020 and that highlight was to climb the Story Bridge. So I did it." It felt amazing because I did it all for me. Having a vision impairment doesn’t have to stop you. I got to explore and experience the climb in a different way. 23.01.2022 Congratulations to our very own Doug Cameron for his nomination for Senior Australian of the Year 2021! Mr Cameron helped found Guide Dogs NSW/ACT in 1957 and has played an integral role in shaping the Guide Dogs movement and establishing Guide Dogs Centres in other states. Mr Cameron was made an honorary life member in 2011 and most recently, The Cameron Centre in Parramatta was named in honour of Mr Cameron as the major benefactor of the Centre. ... Thanks to Mr Cameron's generosity, one million residents in Western Sydney have a local facility to access services from Guide Dogs and the Centre for Eye Health. We can't think of a more deserving person for the award and we've got our fingers crossed for good news! 22.01.2022 We're always grateful for our supporters who leave a gift in their Will to us and our NSW/ACT team recently hosted a virtual morning tea to express our thanks! Whilst our morning tea is traditionally held in person, this year our team including Ambassador Dog Nancy hit the road to hand-deliver morning tea boxes to supporters like Maureen. During the morning tea, our supporters also had the opportunity to meet our latest puppies and enjoy demonstrations of our Guide Dogs in... action. We couldn't do it without our generous supporters and we're so thankful to have them as part of our Guide Dogs family! 21.01.2022 Today is Thank You Day at Guide Dogs! All across Australia, we're taking a moment to thank our amazing supporters who make our work possible. We couldn't have accomplished what we've done this year without your generosity! If you receive a call from an unknown number today, be sure to pick it up as it might be a surprise from us.... 21.01.2022 We're so excited about Kmart Australia's new range of inclusive dolls which represent people with a range of abilities, including a girl with a white cane. It’s so important for children to see themselves represented in media, entertainment and the toys they play with so they can grow up with confidence in themselves. Orientation and Mobility Specialist Brenda explains just how incredible it was to gift one of these dolls to eight-year-old Arliyah.... [Video description: Brenda speaks directly to the camera while images of the inclusive dolls and a video of Arliyah playing with her doll appear on the screen.]

19.01.2022 The wonderful students of the Errington Special Education Centre in Adelaide are in the spirit of giving this festive season! We were overwhelmed to accept a donation of $1,000, which was raised as part of a school project. A class of middle-school students made and sold calendars and key rings, and generously decided to donate the proceeds of their social enterprise to us.... Orientation and Mobility Instructor Justin, Ambassador Dog Esky and other Guide Dogs staff were invited to be special guests at an end of year celebration to formally accept the donation. A big thank you to the M2 Class Team for their hard work and generosity! [Image description: A group of people sitting on a wooden floor. 17.01.2022 Introducing Simon - our Consumer Liaison Officer in South Australia! Simon has been working side-by-side with our Clients for 25 years and offers them information about how to access funding and other community supports. A lot has changed in 25 years, but what hasn’t changed is the people we’ve always had wonderful, caring people. I really enjoy being part of the Guide Dogs family. ... Simon finds his work rewarding, and considers it his way of paying it forward. After graduating from Townsend School (now part of SA School for Vision Impaired), Simon completed University degrees in Economics and Social Work. A lot of people have done a lot for me to get to where I am today. Now, I take a lot of satisfaction when I can contribute to someone else’s development or achievement. Simon has a motto of giving everything a go! He has competed in track and field, swimming and tandem cycling events at national level and was a torchbearer in the 2000 Olympic Torch Relay. [Image description: Simon is sitting at an outdoor table in his backyard with his laptop in front of him. He’s smiling and there’s a bike in the background]

15.01.2022 Last week we celebrated the incredible achievements of 34 Clients who had completed training with their new Guide Dog, long cane or Miniguide at our Queensland Graduation ceremony! Graduate and mother of two, Jen, shared just how much of an impact her first Guide Dog Layla has already made on her life. She’s just changed my world. She’s my right arm and my eyes and she makes everything faster, easier and takes away the barriers.... The most profound thing she’s done for me is, prior to her, I had quite a lot of anxiety which I think is quite common for people who can’t see where they’re going. She lets me walk out my front gate, no anxiety, no one with me, completely free. It’s just the most incredible feeling, walking through space, like a sighted person. We're so grateful to have the chance to celebrate graduates like Jen, who have reached incredible milestones during the uncertainty of the past year. Congratulations to the class of 2020! [Image description: Jen is standing in front of a Guide Dogs banner with her yellow Guide Dog Layla sitting in harness beside her]

13.01.2022 One of our youngest suppawters is showing that age does not determine the impact you can have! Eight-year-old Alita became a Guide Dogs Queensland Youth Ambassador this year and her creative fundraising efforts have been very popular in the community. Alita and her mum Gayle, who runs GayleMarie Photography, have been busy offering pet portraits in exchange for a donation to Guide Dogs.... Alita and Gayle have captured countless portraits of dogs from Labradors to pugs and all the pooches in between and Alita is well on her way to raising an incredible $1,500 goal for Guide Dogs. Youth Ambassadors like Alita are vital in not only raising funds to train future Guide Dogs, but also in raising awareness in the community. Thank you Alita! [Image description: Alita is smiling and wearing a Guide Dogs hat that says, 'Paws up for Guide Dogs'. In the background is an open car boot with several dog portraits.]

09.01.2022 When Trevor experienced sudden vision loss, he felt isolated from the world. He was uncomfortable leaving the house when he couldn’t see his surroundings. Trevor had always been a social person. He didn’t want to spend all his days indoors, so he reached out to Guide Dogs. Trevor started Adult Mobility training, working side-by-side with Guide Dogs Orientation and Mobility Instructors to learn how to move safely and independently in his community. Trevor learned how to navi...gate his own way to local shops and cafés, and also mastered the bus route. Orientation and Mobility Training with Guide Dogs helped me rediscover my independence. I can get out and about by myself, said Trevor. Without that support, I’d be sitting at home alone and probably feeling quite down. Of course, there are challenges along the way ... but I feel part of life again. To learn more about Orientation and Mobility Services, please reach out to your local Guide Dogs team. [Image description: Trevor is sitting inside a café enjoying a coffee and cake at a table with two other people. Trevor has a big smile on his face.]

08.01.2022 It’s not every day that you get to meet your grand-puppies! Long-time volunteers and dog boarders, Guy and Wendy have looked after countless Guide Dogs in Queensland over the years, and among them are Wanda and Hawke. When they discovered that Wanda had given birth to a litter of pups with Hawke, they were over the moon. ... They looked after Wanda throughout her pregnancy and recovery, so we invited them on-site to meet their nine new grand-puppies and their faces say it all. We are so grateful to volunteers like Guy and Wendy whose generosity and kindness changes lives. If you’re located in Queensland and interested in boarding dogs or becoming a breeding carer, visit www.guidedogsqld.com.au/volunteer-with-dogs [Image description: Wendy and Guy smiling at the camera while sitting and holding a black Labrador puppy each. 05.01.2022 Being a teenager comes with a lot of challenges and changes. Now imagine if you also had to deal with a rapid loss of vision. This was the reality for 16-year-old Amy Cooper whose condition, Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis, caused her vision to rapidly deteriorate when she was just 12 years old. It was a very dark place for me dealing with that sudden change to my vision, Amy explained.... Today, Amy navigates her world confidently, with the assistance of her white cane and a lot of determination. Most people know what a white cane is, but they might not realise just how much of a difference it makes to people with vision loss. It is because of the white cane that I can be independent and do all of the things I want to do, she explained. [Image description: Amy standing outside on the grass holding her white cane and smiling at the camera.]

05.01.2022 Thanks to our new partnership with the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), we've been able to continue training our Clients and life-changing Guide Dogs in Victoria! MCEC provides a safe, contained and accessible environment that ensures Victorians with low vision or blindness can continue to receive essential services in compliance with government restrictions. Find out how it’s been going in this video!... [Video description: Video begins with MCEC CEO Peter King speaking to the camera from the Centre followed by Nadine, a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor. Footage of several Guide Dogs in Training, Instructors, and a Client providing training demonstrations at the Centre appear on the screen as they speak.]

01.01.2022 Hats off to our 74 dogs from Guide Dogs Victoria who recently graduated! Graduation Day is normally the biggest day on our calendar but we've had to do things a little differently this year in Victoria due to restrictions. Rather than holding our regular 400 person event, we held a small media call at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) with Goldie the Guide Dog Mascot and a few special guests. ... We wished you could be there in person to celebrate this big day and Guide Dogs Victoria Ambassador, Alex Hecker has prepared this special behind the scenes video so you could be part of the day. This is one of our largest graduating cohort in Victoria for many years and we couldn't thank you all enough for your support to help these dogs graduate - thank you! [Video description: Video begins with Alex speaking to the camera outside of MCEC, followed by footage of Guide Dog Mascot Goldie in her graduation attire and Alex and her interviewees speaking to the camera.]
