22.01.2022 The past few months have presented a unique opportunity to explore different ways of working, so we can bring our Guide Dogs community closer together despite our geographic distance. In the same way our Dog Services teams are collaborating nationally to create the best matches for our clients, we’ve decided to join forces on social media to bring you the best of Guide Dogs from across the country. This is an exciting step for our community. It’s a chance to share the impact ...our life-changing vision services create thanks to your support. You’ll get to meet our amazing clients, staff, volunteers and, of course, our puppies and dogs from South Australia and the Northern Territory to Queensland and everywhere in between. Make sure you never miss a post by following us via the Guide Dogs Australia page www.facebook.com/GuideDogsAustralia [Image description: Two yellow labradors sitting next to each other. 19.01.2022 Making a difference to the lives of people with vision loss is what continues to motivate Desley Shelley after 25 years of working for Guide Dogs Queensland. Desley has been the friendly voice on the other end of the phone since 26 July, 1995 selling merchandise and lottery tickets, and receiving generous donations from loyal Guide Dogs supporters. This incredible lady is 75 years old and walks 4km every day to work in our Toowoomba office. Over the years, she has fundraise...d close to $2 million to help people living with vision loss. Desley said she first started working for Guide Dogs at the age of 50 when her husband retired from the Air Force and suffered from cataracts, meaning she had to find a job to help support the family. Her husband’s sudden vision loss all those years ago has helped her connect to the cause on a much more personal level. Even after all these years I still love going to work every day. I know I’m making a difference, and you really need that in your life, she said. We are so proud to have you as part of our Guide Dogs family, Desley. You make such a big difference every day, and we know our supporters love chatting to you just as much as we love working with you. 17.01.2022 The countdown is on! In just over a month, Queenslanders with vision loss will be eligible for disability parking permits for the first time, gaining access to parking away from busy traffic and close to the entrances of shops and venues. This change will make life safer and easier for thousands of Queenslanders, while also improving the safety of their family members, guide dogs and drivers travelling with them. We are grateful for the support of everyone who made our campai...gn for change possible, and to Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, Mark Bailey MP - Labor for Miller, Coralee O'Rourke MP, Shane King MP and Bart Mellish MP- Member for Aspley to reform this outdated legislation and double the fines for people who illegally park in disability parking bays.
