24.01.2022 PLANT SOME SHADE Summer is just around the corner and soon our hot Western sun will be baking down. This is the time to remember how vital shade trees can be. They ensure that smaller more fragile plants can thrive under their protective canopy. The soil remains cooler and entertaining areas such as lawns and decks become more usable and inviting. There is a large variety of shade trees available to plant and a few things to consider when making your choice. Firstly, conside...r the tree's size at maturity. It can be tempting to select the tree that looks best in the nursery. However, if it will grow into a monster, or be too small to walk under then this will impact its long term effectiveness. Imagine how the tree will fit in the space at full maturity, whether it will impact rooflines, walls or other amenities. Remember that what you see growing above ground, indicates the size of the root system below. For most people on suburban blocks, a medium sized tree of 4-8m is both sustainable and suitable. Secondly is the fun bit, aesthetics. There is a wide range of features to choose from such as leaf size, flower colour (if any), deciduous or evergreen and bark texture. Each tree has unique characteristics and will bring a different feel to your space. Choosing a tree can be fun and rewarding. We have a wide range to select from instore and online. We are brimming expertise to help you make the right choice and are very happy to answer your questions. https://guildfordgardencentre.com.au//c/trees/shade-trees/ If you are still stumped for choice, take walk through your neighbourhood and snap a few pic of trees you like. Bring them in so we can identify, and possibly order them for you. See more

16.01.2022 Leucadendrons are often compared to Australian native species for their drought tolerance and adaptability to our coastal soils. 13.01.2022 Scrumptious Apples Apples are a perfect backyard tree. These old-fashioned staples are both pretty and practical. For many, they carry a nostalgic feel of homegrown simplicity. There are plenty of varieties available, from the crunchy red flesh of ‘Crimson Crisp’ to the traditional cooking apple ‘Granny Smith’. All apples require a cross pollinator (ie a mate) and we can help you select two or more compatible varieties to ensure fruit production. Apples also require a cool... winter. For those lucky enough to receive a frost, try your hand at old-fashioned varieties such as ‘Cox’s Orange Pippin’ or ‘Jonathan’. For those in more coastal areas we recommend the low chill varieties ‘Dorsett Gold’ and ‘Ana’ which will still set fruit in warmer climates. For many home gardeners the delicious fruit is just a bonus. As a feature tree, their soft, romantic blossoms herald the beginning of spring. These are followed by deep green leaves that create plenty of shade. Autumn colours develop as the weather cools off again before shedding the leaves to let in the winter sunlight. Modern grafting techniques and breeding has led to some interesting forms. Apple trees are now available as dwarf forms (approx. 2m at maturity), full sized trees (4m), multi-grafted with two or more varieties grafted onto one tree (4m) as well as the architecturally stunning columnar forms (60cm wide x 3m). Plant apple trees in an open, sunny position. They will tolerate a wide range of soils but prefer free draining with plenty of added compost. Feed with a WA compatible slow release fertiliser each season and water well during the fruiting season. Apples are a resilient tree and show little susceptibility to pest and disease. Their dense fruit makes them un-appealing to fruit fly compared to softer stone fruit. Netting during fruiting season can help to keep hungry birds at bay. Now is the perfect time to pick a pair of apples, so view our range online at https://guildfordgardencentre.com.au//fru/soft-skin/apple/ or pop in store soon for some expert advice. See more

09.01.2022 Make a splash with a water garden! These beautiful flowering water irises are a great reminder that now is an excellent time to establish or revamp a water garden. Water gardens can be created in all manner of sizes, from an existing pond, to a beautiful pot or wine barrel. Choose a large vessel that won't fluctuate with the temperature and place in an area that receives a good amount of sunlight. Most pond plants can’t be fully submerged and need to sit with their soil jus...t below the water level. Achieve this growing the water plants in pots and raising them to the right level on a few bricks. Alternatively, grab a floating pond ring to give your plant perfect buoyancy. Fertilise with pond plant tablets, designed to be frog and fish friendly. Keep the water clear by adding zeolite, which absorbs excess nutrients and helps prevent algal bloom. Most plants can only take a little water splash, so if you want to add a fountain, ensure it doesn’t overwhelm We have a great range of pond plants in store, so pop in soon to check out the range! https://guildfordgardencentre.com.au//category/plants/wat/ See more

08.01.2022 We are excited too! Soil microbes are now in stock! The vital role that soil microbes, beneficial bacteria and fungii play in our soils is phenominal. These wonderous creatures are what keeps our soils alive, active and able to support plant life which in turn supports us. They digest and deliver vital nutrients present in the soil and cycle them in a form that plants can then uptake and use to grow. Using microbes in conjunction with quality composts and mulches helps to bui...ld soil structure and create a more sustainable environment for your beloved plants. Grow Safe Microbes are a balanced combination of cultured soil microorganisms that help mobile minerals and other essential nutrients for uptake by plants. These microbial species include: Azotobacter Free-living nitrogen fixing bacteria. Bacilli Bacteria that assist in soil conditioning, accessing phosphorus reserves and building soil structure. Mycorrhizae Fungi that assist in plants’ mineral nutrient uptake, improve soil health and nutrient recycling processes. Pseudomonas Soldier bacteria that help protect the plant root zone and solubilise phosphates within the soil profile. Rhizobium Symbiotic bacteria that fix nitrogen in the root nodules of leguminous plants. Trichoderma Symbiont fungi that improve plant health. Come is store soon to grab a tub of Spreadable soil microbes or one of their sister products such as Grow Safe fertiliser which incorporates controlled release granules with soil microbes. https://guildfordgardencentre.com.au/
