25.01.2022 Get ready #classof2020. Prepare your exam kit.

24.01.2022 Hay fever and COVID-19 have similar symptoms, so it’s hard to tell them apart without testing. COVID-Safe requirements mean we can’t allow people to enter exam centres if they are showing COVID-19-like symptoms. But here’s what you can do to make sure hay fever doesn’t get in the way of completing your exams:... Follow the Tasmanian Government advice about managing hay fever during these COVID times: - get a COVID test to rule that out - talk to your GP about managing your symptoms - get a medical certificate or letter confirming you have hay fever, so you can go back to school and attend your exams. #classof2020 #covidsafe

07.01.2022 Student Leader Fundraiser for St. John's School Meal Program. "Over the past 4 weeks, GYC has raised much needed funds for St. John’s school in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya. Kibera is Africa’s largest slum with 1.2 million people living within the distance between GYC's Hobart Campus and McDonald’s Argyle Street. In the ‘maze of life’, Kibera’s residents truly have some of the biggest smiles in the world, however due to COVID-19, an already incredibly low employment rate has furthe...r plummeted alongside the ability to go to school and eat regularly. To help with this, GYC have reached out to Nice Coffee Co. and founder Jim Chapman to help facilitate an internal school raffle and soccer match that would directly contribute to the St. John’s food program. Nice Coffee Co. is a social business model which donates directly to St. John’s and is a tremendous support in keeping them afloat. We are proud to announce that we raised over $1,500 during the raffle which included prizes from Da Angelo Ristorante Battery Point , T2 Tea , Oxford Shop , St. Cloud Perfumery , The Body Shop , @lusLUSH Australia , The Cricket Hub Tasmania and Nice Coffee Co. themselves. We cannot thank the sponsors enough, it wouldn't have been possible without you. This was an astounding effort which was capped off beautifully by an end of term soccer match between the year 11s and 12s. The year 12 team wore custom shirts with the names of 16 St. John’s students, deepening a connection between the two schools. The representation of St. John’s at GYC was well recognised and gave students the opportunity to learn where their donation was going to and the positive effects it would have. A remarkable couple of weeks that finished the term in a truly special way. If you would like to find out more on how you can help, search for Nice Coffee Co. on YouTube, Google, Facebook and Instagram and support them on their journey of selling coffee for a cause. A big thank you to all who donated and contributed to St. John’s, with special thanks to Jim Chapman, Mr. Derrick, Mrs. McManus, the Hobart/Glenorchy Admin, Isaiah Prichard, Promise Mudzingwa, Ebony ten Broeke and all leaders, staff and students who actively participated in the weeks events. We can proudly say that we have made a difference." - Tadgh Waddington Enjoy this video filmed and edited Ebony Ten Broeke, one of our Hobart College Captains.

07.01.2022 Earlier in the month our Theatre Performance class performed their externally examined performance of 'Boy Called Flag'. Boy Called Flag is the only public performance that GYC has had this year and there was fantastic support from both the school community and family/friends, it was also particularly great to have former GYC students in attendance. The show had great feedback; audience members commenting that it was, impactful, provocative and layered. Comments also saying... it left a lot to think about and that it was a wonderfully energised performance with a ‘tight’ ensemble of actors. Technical Theatre Production students were also congratulated on their performance with Stage Management and Operations working like clockwork. A wonderful performance by all students involved, well done!

02.01.2022 National Cook Day Introducing our VET Kitchen Operations class, and what they have done in 2020. The VET Certificate II Kitchen Operations Team started the year well with a Day in the Huon, with the Cert I Hospitality Team. We spent the day visiting local producers such as, Grandvewe Cheese farm and Cheesery at Birchs Bay ,Bloops blueberry farm at Gardners Bay, Nutpatch at Kettering and las stop was Cygnet Woodfired Bakehouse for a delicious lunch. We had some fabu...lous tastings along the way and bought back with us some interesting ingredients that we cooked and experimented with. After (what felt like the longest time away from the kitchen) five weeks of online learning we were back into the kitchen preparing and cooking food again. Students worked well during online with completing a good portion of the theory components and it was time to put their newfound knowledge into new cookery skills. Even though students could not go on work placements into Restaurants this year, we successfully catered for some very small GYC gatherings. Loui’s Van and Dining with Friends received food from the students throughout the year, that they had prepared. We also had some guest chef appearances which was fantastic, and we all learnt new skills. We are very grateful to chefs from Industry who kindly give up their time to work with students and share their knowledge, skills and experiences. Scott Heffernan from Franks, Smolt & Suzi Lucks, gave us a whole day of preparing, cooking and tasting some fabulous South American inspired foods. We looked at ‘How to cook a chook’ by deboning a whole chicken and portioning it into separate cuts. We marinated, salted, steamed, sous vide, confit, chargrilled and roasted. We tried several ingredients that we hadn’t tasted before! Ainstie Wagner, Executive Chef from Government House also made an appearance in our kitchen and delighted us with her equally fabulous recipes and Industry experiences. Thank you again! Students have visited some local restaurants to expand their experiences of different service styles and menu items. We recently had a cultural experience at Zafira restaurant, which was very special, and we learnt how to make Afghanistan food such as Bolani, Naan and vegetable dumplings aushak. Cibo e Vino provided us with a delicious Italian lunch which we enjoyed outside in their Terraced area. We farewell three students at the end of this year. They will have completed their full Certificate II Kitchen Operations course and we wish them well for their exciting future in the Hospitality Industry as future Chefs. The remaining team will continue next year on another culinary adventure!

01.01.2022 Referencing Using a wide range of information sources shows that you have undertaken good research, but external markers must be able to clearly see what parts of your work are your own, and what parts you have used from other people’s work. If you hand in work that is not all your own work and you do not reference it appropriately, this is called plagiarism, which is a form of cheating. You risk the cancellation of your external results and possibly all of your results for t...he year, for both internally and externally assessed courses. The Academic Integrity Guide provides information on how you need to reference (cite) other people’s information, images, ideas or words in your work. #classof2020 See more
