25.01.2022 Ok the time has come, it is now 8 years since I retired and it that time another 1600 plus students have graduated. I have no contact with these Alumni and feel that their achievements may have been neglected. This my last post on this page as one of the founders. It is up to all members to find someone else to assist Bec and hopefully a former student who knows people from recent years. Ideally each school captain should be looking after the students from his or her year. Goodbye and thankyou for your support.

24.01.2022 It is with sadness that I record the passing of Adam Croser. Adam was a teacher and mentor to many of our alumni. Adam leaves behind his dear wife Ratchanee, and six year old George. Private Cremation. Celebration of Adam's life will be held at a date to be advised.

22.01.2022 Well said Kate Ahmad, I hope your petition does the job intended. When elected representatives take it upon themselves to deride others what has become of the moral and ethical standards. How can we share your story/sign your petition. Please sign and share my petition. Fraser Anning has no place in our government http://chng.it/Ls6W7yhXph

19.01.2022 In response to the Archbishop of Hobart’s statement I believe it is my duty to let the Alumni know of a few points. In the early 90’s there was much angst from parents, old scholars and students regarding the creation of Guilford Young College. This hostility and angst to GYC continued for several years not only from students from one school but also from a range of educators from other Independent schools in Tasmania. There were several major reasons for the amalgamation of... years 11 and 12 into two large campuses, among them was economic viability and an attempt to increase retention of students until the end of year 12. A problem which the state system was also faced with Tasmania wide. St Virgil’s Austin’s Ferry and Hobart campus had a combined year 11 and 12 cohort of approximately 200 boys. Their largest graduating class was 101. Sacred Heart College had a combined year 11 and 12 cohort of approximately 58 girls Dominic College had a combined year 11 and 12 cohort of approximately 180 boys and girls. Mt Carmel College had a combined year 11 and 12 cohort of approximately 80 girls MacKillop College and St Aloysius were yet to be created although there had been 20 or more years of demand for the establishment of an Eastern shore college. St James had a combined year 11 and 12 cohort of approximately 25 boys and girls. I acknowledge since then there has been the establishment of two high schools and a growth in enrolments. GYC were also able to enrol approximately 20 girls from a single gender high school nearby. If the changes continue as suggested in the Archbishop’s letter GYC Hobart campus will only have Mt Carmel and Sacred Heart as a source of students. The Glenorchy campus will become a pseudo Dominic College year 11 and 12. The technical facilities at Glenorchy will provide Certificate III students form all schools with the facilities and staff they may require. I would suggest that both campuses of GYC will struggle to remain viable and provide the variety of subjects they are able to do so now. Glenorchy campus will drop to 180 year 11 and 12 students and the Hobart campus will be similar. I understand that the Archbishop has an agenda of change and an awareness of demographic projections, however, projections have been incorrect in the past hence the building of St. Virgil’s AF when the populations has only recently progressed in this area. 14.01.2022 Looks like Christmas was a time for catch ups. Post from Rob Zehimeister - Had a wonderful afternoon catching up with my Guilford Young College Boys Basketball Team of 2003. Fifteen years ago they were the first GYC team to win the Tasmanian College Basketball Championships. It was great to catch up and reminisce old times. Hope we can do it again sometime.

11.01.2022 Please sign and share my petition. Fraser Anning has no place in our government http://chng.it/Ls6W7yhXph More than one million people have signed a petition to remove Queensland Senator Fraser Anning from Parliament after his remarks following the Christchurch mosque massacre. Senator Anning said that while he was opposed to violence of any form, what it highlights is the growing fear within our community, both in Australia and New Zealand, of the increasing Muslim presence.... The response on social media was fast and furious but a Sydney doctor Kate Ahmad and a Melbourne author Harris Sultan decided to do more than tweet. Dr Kate Ahmad: "It’s to make clear that this kind of hate speech won’t be accepted." Dr Kate Ahmad: "It’s to make clear that this kind of hate speech won’t be accepted." Separately and an hour apart, they started petitions requesting Senator Anning be removed from parliament. For both, it was their first petition. Now merged, the petition is by far the largest in Australian online petition history and even individually Dr Ahmad’s had eclipsed the Sydney Opera House horse racing advertising petition in 2018. Please sign and share my petition. Fraser Anning has no place in our government http://chng.it/Ls6W7yhXph

01.01.2022 Another Alumni doing extraordinary work. Well done Jessica Sabapathy

01.01.2022 Some fantastic stories have come out of the current pandemic. One of which is GYC’s 2009 alumni, Tyler Clark who has been in the spotlight today with this artic...le published by the Mercury. GYC has been supporting Tyler by stocking up on the 7K hand sanitiser that he produces from his Brighton Distillery.

01.01.2022 For all those who did not access the recent Mercury gallery of our talented alumni here is the link. https://www.themercury.com.au//9274fbf573b1a7474c40f524c56 Please note that 28 students out of 10,000 alumni is only a very small total out of each and everyone of you who have gone on to improve yourselves and contribute back to the community. As I sit here writing this I can think of many more. The College was limited to how many they could nominate. Having said that, M...r Deayton has invited me to assist in expanding our data base and the life you are all following since you left GYC. I will post more on this as I find out the structure etc. BIG request... I am now 70, and left the College at the end of 2011. Bec Hammond has been an unrelenting provider of information as well as being involved in so many projects. This page NEEDS some Alumni from more recent years to step up and assist as this will most likely be my last year of assisting. Please ask your friends, Ideally one from each five years since students began in 1995 would be fantastic.
