24.01.2022 A couple of fretboards had to come off this week - a broken truss rod and a neck reset in for repair. Also had a beautiful Maton Messiah in the shop, rosewood back and sides and ebony fretboard.

22.01.2022 A quite severe headstock break on this PRS led to a repair that required fretboard removal and the application of multiple wood grafts. Great result in the end.

22.01.2022 Out with the PAF's, in with the P90's... Though this Gibson ES330 originally did have P90s - it was beautifully converted to humbuckers and refinished in the early 2000's. I've CNC'd a shim to cover the extended rout area that accommodated the humbuckers. It's subtle so the concealment of the extra space isn't obvious.

21.01.2022 Here's a Warwick Streamer Jazzman 5 that came in for a full body refinish. Originally green, the re-fin has been done to emulate the "Nirvana Black" Warwick finish which is satin over black stain. Plays and sounds epic.

A couple of refrets, one a 60s Olympic white and another beautiful 70s maple neck. A Seymour Duncan magnetic into a beautiful Maton 12. And yes a Les Paul now happy with its head back on.

18.01.2022 Neck repair on a Les Paul near the heel - this one was stepped on and the neck broke but the fretboard stayed intact. Glued the crack first, but to get some strength across the fracture I scooped out a section with the CNC to allow a long patch of mahogany to again provide support over the cracked area. Refinished and back in action.

18.01.2022 CABAL in cool white nitro, all mahogany, 24 stainless frets, Hipshot hardtail bridge, Dimarzio humbuckers with coil split, 12-16 compound radius ebony fretboard with NZ Paua shell inlays.

18.01.2022 While lockdown came on suddenly, it's given me a chance to catch up on lots of jobs this week. The workshop is closed to the public this week but I'll be ready to take more jobs when restrictions are lifted. Stay safe and strumming all!! ;-)

18.01.2022 Here's a custom neck for a Maton electric recently completed. The new neck carve is based on PRS Pattern style which is a little more C than D shaped and generally thicker than this stock Maton overall by around 1.5-2mm. Dual carbon fiber reinforced with 2 way truss rod, Tasmanian blackwood neck, ebony fretboard and flame maple faceplate with jumbo frets.

17.01.2022 Interesting bridge repair on a small body Martin this week, the bridge was split at the saddle slot. On close inspection, the bridge must have been originally installed in the wrong position, prompting another repairer (or the factory perhaps?) to fill in the original saddle slot and cut a new one to achieve the correct intonation. While it was a fantastic and virtually invisible repair, it has led to a weak area in the bridge and over time the string tension has cracked and warped the bridge. I've removed the bridge, glued the split parts together with epoxy, steamed it back into shape and then glued it back onto the top. Plays well and sounds great now, and with no truss rod on these little guitars, it has to have been a well made instrument to play correctly. Love it.

17.01.2022 This Martin D-28-P was in for a neck reset and binding repair over the last few weeks. Plays and sounds great, it's back in the game.

13.01.2022 Here's a guitar that plays and sounds as good as any large body steel string acoustic I've ever played. A 1970's Gibson J200 at neck reset time, now hopefully it can go on for another 40 odd years for Rich Bowering.

12.01.2022 Here's a repair of one of those "whoops" moments. The customer was making a truss rod adjustment and he heard that awful snap sound.... Fretboard off, new rod installed, fretboard back on, refinish neck and fret level/setup and back to playing.

11.01.2022 If you've never seen robot tuners before, check out the Gibson GForce tuning system on this 2015 Les Paul that was on the bench today!

10.01.2022 Gibson SG with a significant headstock break, there were several pieces that had to go together like a jigsaw. It had been repaired before using some screws - not my first choice of a solution but anyway, they had to come out. CNC'd a socket and inserted a mahogany spline to give some long grain strength to the join.

08.01.2022 Taylor 414 on the bench this week for some repairs. If you haven't seen it before, the great thing about these guitars is that the neck angle can be corrected at any time by swapping out the heel and neck extension shim system for different sizes. It's absolutely brilliant for repairers and great peace of mind for the customer in the future if things ever change with their Taylor guitar. Guitar Repairs South West is an authorised Taylor repairer.

07.01.2022 Machined a new bridge for a Martinez acoustic today, the previous one had split under string tension. They are a top-mount design (string through top of the bridge) and can be susceptible to breaks if you perhaps go up a gauge. Another big thanks for the CNC!

05.01.2022 Fender P-bass neck here from the 70s that has out lived it's truss rod. Fretboard off, new truss rod in and carbon fiber rods installed to stop the neck from going all bananarama under string tension

03.01.2022 A neck jig is something you don't need all the time but when you need to level a fretboard that has a natural backbow, they are absolutely indispensable. You can easily simulate string tension with the jig, or as in this case, get the fretboard dead level before filing.
