13.01.2022 E-Beef came to the open downs country of the Desert Channels region on a cold windy (date) of June, 2019. On Dalmore, 50 kilometres north of Longreach, landhol...ders and cattle producers sought refuge in the DCQ tent to listen to the E-Beef message. Dalmore, owned and operated by Richard Simpson, was the first Smart Farm in the Desert Channels region. Richard discusses the surprise he felt when he was shown how the E-Beef data could support his decision making. To view videos 1 - 5 in the series visit the E-Beef channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcbGk8ah9ioLPK7WzgzpLxQ The E-Beef Project is a partnership between Southern Gulf NRM, Desert Channels Queensland, Northern Gulf Resource Management Group and Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. 12.01.2022 Coordinator-General trip update: We've made our way to Georgetown in Etheridge Shire Council, where we were joined by North Queensland RRO Tahna Jackson. We ha...d a very fruitful discussion with Mayor Barry Hughes, councillors, local cattle producers and reps from the Gulf Cattleman's Association. They told us about how important the $400,000 co-contribution Restocking Replanting and On-Farm Infrastructure grants will be leading into this wet season - which will hopefully be better than the last! Barry was also pleased to hear that local knowledge is at the centre of the delivery of our long-term strategy. We're looking forward to working with the council and local community to improve the Shire's connectivity and disaster mitigation capability. 09.01.2022 Thank goodness these cuties are doing just fine in cattle country because they’re aren’t fairing well in national parks.

09.01.2022 China’s import ban on four Australian abattoirs represent 35 per cent of beef exports to China, a trade that had been on track to reach $3.5 billion this year. https://www.abc.net.au//china-trade-escalation-as/12237468

03.01.2022 CHANGE IS NEEDED When a grazier sends a beast to the abattoir they are discounted if the animal only has a short or no tail even though the offal (Tail, liver ...& heart etc) is not weighted so the processor is getting it for free. Then what happens is the processor puts all of the short tails into a box and sells them to a butcher for exactly the same price as a long tail. Now when I say discounted sometimes it is 20 to 40cents/kg on the entire beast. Not bad for a item they are getting for free. Funny how then there is no discount for the butcher at the other end. The only person not being ripped off is the processors who will tell everybody how tough they doing it. I call bull*#@t. See more

01.01.2022 We are constantly being told that the world needs to switch to a plant-based diet. But did you know that less than 20% of the world's landmass is arable? Even ...more worrying, we are losing arable land at a rate of 100,000km2 every year, caused by urban sprawl, industrialisation and desertification and erosion caused by too much reliance on monocultures. How do we propose to feed 7.5 billion people worldwide using only 20% of our landmass when we are already struggling to feed that same population an omnivorous diet derived from both land and sea that is higher in calorie density? The only way we can do it is to steal even more land from wildlife, or to reclaim prime arable land from urban sprawl and return it to farmland, and even then, how do we produce enough variety of foods to meet the nutritional needs of all 7.5 billion people without forcing the 50% of the world's population that live in extreme poverty to have to buy expensive supplements just to survive. On the other hand, livestock can be grazed on land that is completely unusable for crops. Wildlife and feral animals can be sustainably hunted and contribute to the protein needs of the population, and food can also be sourced from the ocean, where no plants can be grown. The Masai in Africa and the Innuit in Northern America are two tribes that spring to mind that survive on a largely animal diet because their landscape does not lend itself to cultivation. It always strikes me as odd that people think it's an either/or argument. That we need to either choose meat or plants as our main food source. Biologically, humans are omnivores. We are designed to eat both plants and animal products, which is exactly what got us to the top of the food chain in the first place. The true answer doesn't lie in demonising one food source over another. It lies in choosing foods that are locally and sustainably sourced - whether that be meat or veggies.
