25.01.2022 So poignant. We will remember them https://youtu.be/p90PtaPSCsM

24.01.2022 The Governor-General has written to Her Majesty The Queen with the Australian Government’s recommendation for the posthumous award of the Victoria Cross for Aus...tralia to Ordinary Seaman Edward ‘Teddy’ Sheean. The story of Teddy Sheean’s actions are inspirational. As we approach the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, they are a vivid reminder of the heroic sacrifice that so many young Australians made in the service of our nation. That service and sacrifice will be forever remembered and honoured. The Victoria Cross for Australia is the only award within Australia’s Honours and Awards system that requires Her Majesty’s approval. If Her Majesty approves the posthumous award, the Governor-General will, in due course, facilitate an investiture ceremony that befits this historic recommendation. 21.01.2022 LIVE: Arrivals for funeral service of Dame Vera Lynn, the endearingly popular Forces’ Sweetheart who serenaded British troops during World War II, and recently died at age 103.

20.01.2022 On this day in 1945, seventy-five years ago, World War II ended when the surrender of Imperial Japan was announced over the radio by Japanese Emperor Hirohito. ...By the end of July 1945, the Imperial Japanese Navy was incapable of conducting major operations and an Allied invasion of Japan was imminent. The Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had been largely destroyed by atomic bombs on 6 and 9 August, killing nearly a quarter of a million people, and the Soviet Union had invaded the Imperial Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo. These events precipitated the intervention of the emperor, but internal Japanese negotiations and a failed coup d'etat occurred before the emperor's radio address on 15 August. The surrender formalities occurred on 2 September, by which time the occupation of Japan had begun. During the nearly six years of war, Australia's casualties from enemy action during the war were 27,073 killed and 23,477 wounded. World War II contributed to major changes in the nation's economy, military and foreign policy. The war accelerated the process of industrialisation, led to the development of a larger peacetime military and began the process with which Australia shifted the focus of its foreign policy from Britain to the United States. The final effects of the war also contributed to the development of a more diverse and cosmopolitan Australian society. A commemorative service will be held at 11am today at the National War Memorial, cnr North Tce and Kintore Ave, Adelaide, members of the public are very welcome, but physical distancing and covid-19 hygiene must be maintained at all times. 20.01.2022 What an incredible tribute to the 8 million horses, donkeys and mules that died faithfully, their duty done. Faithful to the very end. #remembertoremember

17.01.2022 INTERESTING HISTORY ITEM 7’3 Jakob Nacken (221 cm), the tallest German soldier of WW2, chatting with 5’3 (160 cm) British corporal Bob Roberts after surrendering to him near Calais, France, 1944.

14.01.2022 This has got to be one of the most powerful photographs I have ever seen. Above is a battalion of the Cameron Highlanders in 1914, prior to being despatched to the front line; below is the same battalion upon their return in 1918 after the armistice.

14.01.2022 A big thanks to the group of students from Gumeracha Primary School that helped the members of the local RSL put out Crosses along the Soldiers Memorial Hospital lawn this morning for Remembrance Day tomorrow. LEST WE FORGET

09.01.2022 Live: Crowds gather for Dame Vera Lynn funeral procession

05.01.2022 I am putting a video of ‘Can You Hear Australia’s Heroes Marching?’ in the video section of this Facebook Page. I recorded the song in March 2001. One interes...ting thing about the song is the global aspect of the internet allowed many people from other countries to hear the song. For instance, some years ago a publishing house in Norway asked for the song. The Norwegian publishing house Aschehoug is about to publish a new series of English schoolbooks for 8-10th grade in the Norwegian market. In this new series, called Key English, we want to make use of the song Can You Hear Australia’s Heroes Marching. The song has been used for commemorative purposes across Australia by schools, churches, choirs, bands, councils, retirement homes, military services, RSL branches and ANZAC tributes at NRL & AFL matches. Radio stations throughout Australia have broadcast the song leading up to ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. The song has also been requested to be played at funerals (for veterans). Lest We Forget.

04.01.2022 RSL South Australia reinforces its position on false claims of military service and the wearing of unapproved, non-entitled and purchased commemorative medals.

03.01.2022 Join us virtually this morning at the National Service of Remembrance. #Remembrance #LestWeForget
