25.01.2022 The pre-school children are encouraged and supported by the educators and the environment to be: active researchers, curious, to initiate design and extend on their own play, investigate and explore areas of interest. The structure of the day supports sustained learning as there are lengthy and uninterrupted blocks of time for children to explore and learn through their play. 23.01.2022 Welcome 2018! Weve had such a busy start to January getting back into the swing of things after the Christmas break. Here at Gumnut Gardens, we began our year talking a lot about Australia Day/Survival Day. We celebrate Australia Day by acknowledging the survival of Aboriginal peoples, customs and traditions and Bush Tucker and have termed it Survival Week. For an entire week, we devoted our educational program to learning about Indigenous perspectives through books, film cl...ips, cooking, discussions and experiences, led by our Indigenous Cultural Educator, Aunty Marion of Wiradjuri country. To avoid tokenism, we embed Indigenous perspectives within our program beyond Survival Week in order to enrich our perspectives and understandings of diversity. Aunty Marion is involved Bush Kindy and has inspired us with story-telling and painting, consequently developing our childrens understandings of the symbolism in Indigenous art, Bush Tucker, medicinal uses of plants and The Dreaming. 22.01.2022 We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which Gumnut Garden stands, the Gadigal people, and pay our respects to the Elders past and present. All week, weve been exploring Dreamtime stories, getting to know the stories, histories and worldviews of the Indigenous people. It has inspired us to explore the pictures and to research the meanings behind the symbols. Many of our stories revolve around birds, so fitting as this happens to be an ongoing inte...rest for the preschoolers at Bush Kindy! 20.01.2022 No Way. The Hundred is there No Way. The Hundred is there "The child is made of one hundred. The child has a hundred languages, a hundred hands, a hundred thoughts, a hundred ways of thinking, of playing, of speaking. A hundred always a hundred ways of listening, of marvelling. A hundred of joys, a hundred worlds to discover, to invent, to dream."... Loris Malaguzzi We have been exploring shells, shapes, details, creating artistic compositions and outside we cooked with shells and other natural elements, using pots, spoons, plates and cups... We showed to be interested in this creative and symbolic provocation and we enjoyed spending these moments with the others. In addition we have been starting to create our own planetary messages with loose parts, natural elements and industrial materials, a project that we have been developing for the Vivid.

17.01.2022 We feel so lucky to have Marion Simpson as part of our Gumnut team. "The children have learned about the Aboriginal symbols they were used as a means of communication by our ancestors during their lives on earth. I enjoy the times I go on bush kindy because we have the chance to do rock drawings in the outdoors and I can explain to the children how some of the plants in Centennial Park were used by Indigenous people for food and medicine. https://www.gumnutgardens.com.au/people/marion-simpson/

11.01.2022 In our Jarjum Preschool Room, the children are exposed to a range of art styles and mediums that they constantly manipulate and explore. One of the ongoing interests in the room is a fascination with light, shadows and projection. We are always finding ways to use our projector and fairy lights to enhance our imagination, creativity, shadow play and to add a depth and dimension to their constructions. We decided to extend on this interest by organising an excursion to the Mu...seum of Contemporary Art Australia to visit the Pipilotti Rist: Sip my Ocean MCA exhibition. Pipilottis visual work incorporates light installations, projections, movement and videography that align with our current investigations. The children had a wonderful time exploring aspects of shadow play and light projection, completely immersing themselves in the wonderful world that Pipilotti has created. See more

11.01.2022 Bush Kindy for 2018 is back in full swing as we continue utilising the park as a backdrop to enhance childrens learning and connectedness to nature. Weve seen the children grow by leaps and bounds not just in their physical skills but also in their emotional well-being. As we trek through natures terrain, study birds and insects, climb trees and scale up rocks, we are slowly building the childrens sense of agency and resilience as they learn to navigate through this wonde...rful environment with great enthusiasm, safety and care. We love how being in nature offers children opportunities to simply be - to explore, investigate, problem-solve, theories and share ideas as we learn to become socially responsible and show respect for the environment. Through Bush Kindy, we aim to develop their sense of curiosity and foster their sense of wonder and the desire to know how or why things work, thus building their confidence and involvement as lifelong learners. 10.01.2022 To a festival full of light! Happy Chanukah.

10.01.2022 As Loris Malaguzzi reminds us, we support and strongly believe in "a child rich in potential" and connections with the world. Last week we started a new outdoor project, where we can share our learning investigations with preschoolers and Infants; we have enjoyed our Atelier, observing real elements: daises, lilies, mandarins Toddlers and preschoolers have experienced observational drawings, analysing together details and characteristics of the object. It is just the beginni...ng of an outdoor possibility, which allows them to expand their visual discrimination skills and the learning opportunity to develop an analytical and scientific approach (utilising the digital microscope too!). So, every week we connect observational drawing, analysing objects and real elements and the main simple\complex question is what can you see? and it is amazing to see all the different ways to look at things. Our social connections are rich in respect, kindness and positive interactions with peers and educators, inspiring each other with ideas and experimentation. We see these as essential elements of any authentic cognitive and educational process. Learning is a synthesis between the individual and their context, a warm relationship between those who learn and that which is being learned, a relationship filled with emotion, curiosity, and humour. For each of us, the cognitive act becomes a creative act, involving the assumption of responsibility as well as autonomy and freedom, in order to create a sense of optimism. With Love Gumnut Gardens

06.01.2022 At Gumnut Gardens, we abide by the philosophy that there is no such thing as inappropriate weather, just inappropriate clothing! Here are some photos of our preschoolers making the most out of Sydneys fickle weather at Bush Kindy yesterday. We love the way that children remind us about the little things in life: experiencing the joy of jumping into muddy puddles! #BushKindy #CentennialPark #rain #muddypuddles #gumboots

05.01.2022 Charlynn Lim is one of our wonderful early childhood teachers "I firmly believe in play-based learning as it invites children to experience learning through exploration, improvisation, imagination as well as through social interaction. I love exploring the creative arts and believe that it provides children with multiple languages to represent and express their ideas."
