25.01.2022 C'ship Pairs Wayne Carthew & Johnny Heyen after jumping to a massive lead in a c'ship pairs match played last Thursday afternoon, had to withstand a barnstorming finish from Graeme Tickner & Bruce Tout, before prevailing 22 shots to 18. Carthew & Heyen jumped out of the blocks like a jack rabbit to lead 15-5 after eleven ends, then Tickner & Tout staged a gallant fightback taking six of the next seven ends to trail 17-15 at the end of the eighteenth. Carthew & Heyen scored th...ree shots on the next two ends to lead 20-15, with Tickner & Tout reciprocating with three shots on ends twenty one & twenty two. 25.01.2022 C'ship Triples Bruce McCarthy, Jon Kerr & John "Mitch" Peterson led from barrier to box in defeating Eric Weston, Bob Smart & Rick Young 19 shots to 14 last Sunday afternoon. The McCarthy led trio exploded out of the barriers to lead 10-1 after 8 ends & went further ahead & led 16-4 at the end of the 16th & looked like running right away with the match. Weston's team then demonstrated what they were capable of & showed a lot of grit by taking six of the next seven ends to tra...il 18-14 with one end to play, but the bird had flown for Eric's side after that earlier point scoring onslaught that McCarthy's side had produced. It was reported after the match was completed that "Mitch" had played unbelievable lead bowls & was by far & away the best player on the rink. Mixed Pairs In a very exciting mixed pairs match played last week Graeme Tickner & Cecily Luff prevailed 21 shots to 17 over Rick Young & Bronwyn Naughton. The match was all tied up at 4 all after six ends & 8 all after eleven, with Graeme & Cecily scoring 6 unanswered shots on the next three ends to skip out to a 14-8 lead after fourteen. Rick & Bronwyn rallied & came back strongly taking five of the next seven ends to trail 17-16 at the end of the twenty first & the game was there for the taking. Graeme & Cecily then put an end to the comeback by scoring 4 shots on next three ends to slip out to 21-16 lead with only one end to play, before conceding a solitary shot to their opposition on the 25th & last end to take out a wonderful match. In a surprisingly one sided mixed pairs match played last Thursday afternoon rookie bowler Shane Bartlett teamed up with the experienced Joan Dunn to completely annihilate the veteran pairing of Bruce Tout & Ina Ford 27 shots to 9. On paper it looked like an even money bet, & it looked like being that after twelve ends with Bartlett & Dunn holding a slender 10 shots to 8 lead. But it was not to be as Shane & Joan went on a point scoring rampage taking nine of the next ten ends scoring an amazing 17 shots to Bruce & Ina's solitary shot to run right away with the match in the end, with Bruce & Ina hoisting the white flag with three ends still to play. Thursday Social Graeme Tickner, P.O. Reardon & Dick Jones d Jon Kerr, Mark McAlister & Col Harris 27-14. Mick Houstein, Joe Bond & Wayne Carthew d Eric Weston, John Heyen & Henry Crowe 21-18. "Mitch" Peterson & Murray Naughton d Rick Young & John H. Pearce 21-16. Flash back to 1970.

Tarcutta then skipped away again scoring three shots on end fifteen to lead 16-12, with Eric's side scoring single shots on the next three ends to trail 16-15 & the match was there for the taking. The Tarcutta side played exceptional bowls scoring single shots on the final three ends to take out an enthralling final. 20.01.2022 C'ship Triples In complete contrast to the horrible weather the previous weekend it was surprising that only one match was played at the weekend with Eric Weston, Bob Smart & Rick Young giving Donny Smith, P.O. Reardon & Mitch Goodsall a fair little touch up, defeating them 32 shots to 9 on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon. The Weston skipped trio bounded out of the blocks scoring a single shot, then a five & a six, and in the twinkling of an eye the score was 12-0 after... three ends. Smith's side then steadied the ship & scored four shots on the next two ends to trail 12-4 after five. From there on it was one way traffic as Eric, Bob & Rick went on a scoring rampage taking seven of the next eight ends out to explode to a 23-5 lead before winning four of the final seven ends to completely dominate their opposition. Thursday Social James "Happy" Bourke, Mark Maynard & Glenn McGeachie d John Heyen, Murray Naughton & Bruce Tout 23-20 (with a five on the final end). 19.01.2022 C'ship Pairs Final In a classic game of pairs bowls played last Sunday, Bobby Smart & John "MItch" Peterson proved much too good for Eric Weston & Rick Young, defeating them 26 shots to 17. Bob & "Mitch" won 6 of the first eight ends to lead 11-4, with Eric & Rick taking the next 5 ends to snatch a 12-11 lead at the end of the fourteenth. The quartet of players traded shot for shot for the next 5 ends & the match was there for the taking with Eric & Rick holding a slender 17-...15 lead after nineteen. Weston & Young surprisingly then went off the boil & Smart & Peterson took full advantage, running away with the match, scoring 11 unanswered shots on the final five ends to claim the 2020 pairs title. C'Ship Singles Bob Smart progressed to the next round of the c'ship singles last Saturday with a hard fought 31 shots to 24 victory over Henry Crowe. Henry held a narrow 8-6 lead after eight ends, with Bob taking 5 of the next seven ends to dash out to a 15-10 lead after fifteen ends. Crowe showed he wouldn't surrender by scoring 9 shots to Smart's 4 on the next seven ends to tie proceeding up at 19 all at the end of the twenty second end. Bob then grabbed the match by the scuff of the neck by scoring 9 unanswered shots to career out to 28-19 lead with Crowe taking the next three ends to trail 28-24. Smart then scored the 3 shots needed to have a great victory. Eric Weston exploded out of the barrier last Saturday & in the twinkling of an eye the score was 15-1 by the end of the tenth, before going on to record a 31 shots to 22 over Mark Maynard. Weston was in superb touch & Mark had no answer, with Eric having the game all parcelled up when he led 28-11 at the end of the twentieth. Much to his credit Maynard didn't throw the towel in taking seven of the final eight ends, but the bird had flown for Mark after the earlier onslaught by Weston. Mixed Pairs Tom French & Helen Perce were also in superb touch last Saturday when they dismantled Pete Smith & Gail Rowland's title bid, defeating them 30 shots to 15. The match looked like being a tight affair earlier with Tom & Helen holding a slender 7-6 lead after seven ends. French & Pearce then took five of the next six ends to dart out to a 15-7 lead after thirteen, & 20-15 after twenty one. Tom & Helen then won the final three ends piling on 10 unanswered shots to career away with the match in the finish. Saturday Social Wendy Nicholson, Joan Dunn & John Pearce d Merle Stockwell, Richard Erkelens & Di Keenan 20-14. 15.01.2022 Due to some inclement weather, there was little action on the bowling greens recently, however the Southern Highlands District Bowling Association State Events did go ahead, with the State Senior Triples taking place at Club Tumut on Saturday August 8. Gundagai was represented by Eric Weston, Rick Young and John Heyen(sub for Mick Houstein). The Gundagai team came up against the strong team of Neil Bulger, John Rogers and Rick McAlister in the final, but unfortunately suffer...ed a loss of 24-10. The Gundagai team’s preparation for the final was slightly disrupted following the withdrawal of Mick Houstein, due to injury, and meeting this strong Tumut team on their home ground made things a little tough, but the Gundagai team were not about to make excuses, by their own admission they were simply outplayed by a better team on the day. State President’s Fours. Eric Weston, Rick Young and John Heyen will look to put the disappointment of the State Senior Triples behind them, when they will be joined by Wayne Carthew(who comes in for the injured Mick Houstein) to take on R. Schmetzer, J. Shore, H. Chugg and P.J Richards in the State Presidents Fours at Gundagai on Saturday August 15 at 9:30am. If they are successful in this match, they will play the winners of the second semi-final between B. Butz, R. Miller, S. Houting and B. Shore and the team from Tarcutta. Cancellation of Zone Events Due to the on going COVD-19 pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding restrictions which are in place by the NSW Health Department the Zone Executive and Match Committee along with the unanimous agreement of all Districts in the Zone the following events have been cancelled for 2020: President’s Cup Bing Wallder Shield The venues who were due to host these events will be offered the opportunity to host these events in 2021. Ultimately this will be left up to the relevant District’s being: President’s Cup: (Riverina) Leeton & District Bowling Club Bing Wallder Shield: (Wagga) Junee Bowling Club Bruce Rayner Zone 8 Match Committee Chair Social bowls. J. Bond & C. Harris drew with E. Weston, H. Crowe and B. Tout 19-19. J. Heyen, J. Quarmby and M. Naughton d B. McCarthy, M. Peterson and R. Young 22-10. W. Carthew and J. Kerr d M. Houstein and D. Jones 19-15. As previously mentioned, Mick Houstein will be out of action for a few weeks after being injured following a fall. We all wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to him being back on the greens in the not too distant future. This will be my final report for the time being, after a short break your regular bowls news scribe, Rod Brooke will be back on deck for the next report and many more to follow. Welcome back Rod. 14.01.2022 C'ship Triples In an exciting game of triples bowls played last Thursday afternoon, veterans Bruce McCarthy, Jon Kerr & "Mitch" Peterson prevailed over a gallant Pete Smith, Bruce Tout & Murray Naughton (sub for Graham Ingold) 23 shots to 18. It was a classic match from start to finish with all six players at the top of their game, with majestical bowling the order of the day. Actually Smith's side won thirteen of the twenty one ends played, but when they lost an end it was b...y multiple shots. The two sides went blow for blow for the first ten ends, & at the halfway mark the score was all tied up at 10 all. Pete's side scored three shots on the next two ends to take a 13-10 lead, but then dropped seven shots on the next two to find themselves behind 17-13. Smith's side then regrouped, taking four of the next five ends to trail 19-18 & the match was still anyone’s for the taking at the end of the nineteenth. 12.01.2022 C'ship Singles In a surprisingly one sided C'ship singles match played last Saturday afternoon Eric Weston proved much too good for Graeme Tickner, easily defeating him 31 shots to 10. Eric took eight of the first ten ends to career out to an 18-3 lead, with Graeme taking four of the next five ends to trail 19-9 at the end of the fifteenth. Weston was ruthless & gave Tickner no respite as he continued on his shot scoring rampage as he exploded away with the match only allowi...ng Tickner to win seven of the twenty two ends played. "B" Grade Singles In another one sided singles match played last Thursday afternoon, Pete Smith gave John Pearce a bit of a bowling lesson, being victorious 31 shots to 11. The match looked like being a real battle early with the scores locked together at 9 all after eleven ends, but it was one way traffic from there on as Smith raced away with the match winning thirteen of the final fourteen ends, scoring twenty two shots to his opponents two. Rick Young was also in scintillating form when he easily defeated Pete Gailey 31 shots to 18 last Saturday afternoon. The score was evenly poised at 9 all after eleven ends, with Gailey taking four of the next five ends to lead 14-10 at the end of the sixteenth. 10.01.2022 Championship Singles. Eric Weston defeated Wayne Carthew 31-20 in a championship singles match played recently. After dropping the first end and three shots, We...ston settled into the match to take six of the next seven ends, scoring thirteen shots to Carthew’s four to take a 13-7 lead. Carthew then picked up another three shots to start a run of ends for him, to bring the score to 14-13 at end thirteen. The score ebbed and flowed from this point, with players exchanging ends, until end twenty one, where Weston held sway 19-18. From this point Weston found another gear and took complete control, taking all but one of the next seven ends, outscoring Carthew twelve shots to two, to take a convincing victory over an opponent who had been in great form. Weston himself has also has been performing consistently good of late, and this combined with his experience, proved the difference at the business end of the match. One thinks Weston’s days of flying under the radar are well and truly no more. Social games E. Weston, B. McCarthy & B. Tout d J. Bond, J. Quarmby & R. Erkelens 28-9. J. Kerr, J. Heyen, & T. Coggan d M. Houstein, J. Bourke & C. Harris 27-24. W. Carthew, M. Naughton, M, Maynard & R. Jones d H. Crowe, J. Pearce, P.O Reardon & R. Jones 25-10. Now the fun bit, in this game one team called Hi Ace defeated another team called the Critters 21-7. The tough part for this scribe was to determine which players were in which team, but I will give it a go. I know it is dangerous to assume, but here goes, forgive me if I get it wrong. Hi Ace I believe were represented by H. Pearce, B. Naughton & J. Dunn and The Critters, R. Erkelens, M. Naughton, & J. Pearce. I have a 50% chance of being right. Great to see our bowlers have maintained their sense of humour. Must congratulate bowlers on the good work done with keeping scorecards, unfortunately there is always an exception. Some keeping score have become a tad complacent lately, one card was passed on to me to try and decipher, it was almost illegible and had more lines than a million pairs of Adidas. To borrow a quote from A.B. Paterson, and I think the same was written with a thumb-nail dipped in tar. Pete Smith who is standing in for usual scribe Rod Brooke, who has hibernated to Sunny Nth Qld for a month.
09.01.2022 Minor Singles Final Rick Young showed his experience last Thursday when he comfortably defeated the ever improving Shane Bartlett, defeating Shane 31 shots to 22. Rick then took charge of the match, scoring 5 unanswered shots to go out to a 28-21 lead, before taking 3 of the final four ends to take out the 2020 title. It was a magnificent effort by Shane to make the final in his first year of playing bowls. Mixed Pairs Mark Maynard & Ruby Crane proved much too good for Shane Bartlett & Joan Dunn last Saturday, defeating them 25 shots to 17. Mark & Ruby were in superlative touch & led 11-8 after 12 ends, then took 6 of the next eight ends to explode away to a match winning 22-11 at the end of the twentieth. Mark & Ruby then cruised to the line for a very comprehensive victory. In a very high class game of mixed pairs bowls played on Tuesday morning Graeme Tickner & Cecily Luff prevailed over siblings Wayne Carthew & Carol Dowell, defeating them 24 shots to 20. The quartet were locked together at 7 all after eight, & after thirteen Graeme & Cecily held a slender 13-12 lead. Tickner & Luff then won five of the next seven ends to scoot out to a 20-14 lead & looked like running away with the match, but Carthew & Dowell created an exciting finish by taking two of the next three ends (including a 5) to trail 21-20 with two ends to play. Graeme & Cecily took those last two ends scoring three shots to claim a wonderful victory.
