23.01.2022 NAIDOC is an acronym for the National Aborigines & Islanders Day Observance Committee. The organising committee behind the adopted this name in 1991. However, the idea behind NAIDOC goes back to a letter written by William Cooper that was aimed at Aboriginal Communities & Aborigines Progressive Association, (an umbrella group for several Aboriginal justice movements). The association gathered together a wide circle of Indigenous leaders including Douglas Nicholls, William Fer...guson, Jack Patten & Margaret Tucker. In 1937 they were preparing for what would become the famous Day of Mourning in 1938. It not only sparked a highly effective one-off protest. It also stimulated a national observance that was at first championed by churches & is now a national celebration. William Cooper (18/12/1860-29/3/1941) was an Australian Aboriginal political activist & community leader, the first to lead a national movement recognised by the Australian Government. William Cooper was born in Yorta, Yorta territory around the intersection of the Murray & Goulburn Rivers in Victoria in Australia on 18 December 1860. His family was a small remnant of what Cooper recalled as a large tribal group, as a lad I can remember 500 men of my tribe, the Moiras, gathered on one occasion. Ow my family is the only relic of the tribe. From there Cooper appears to have been forced by necessity to work for a variety of pastoral employers, even as a child. Now NAIDOC Week is a time in Australia to celebrate the history, culture & achievements of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples. Postponed from it’s usual month of July due to Covid-19, NAIDOC Week runs from 8-15 November. This year’s theme ‘Always was, Always will be’, recognises that First Nations People have occupied & cared for the continent for more than 50,000 years. NAIDOC Week is ‘a time when Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander People feel an immense pride in celebrating our culture, communities & stories & collectively being a part of the world’s oldest living culture’. NAIDOC Week is particularly important this year because of the situation we’ve faced in 2020 with Covid-19 & the additional risk to the community. We’ve risen to the challenge & shown our resilience. We have been on a long journey & we will continue our journey & invite you all to be part of our journey. Uncle Peter Smith
