24.01.2022 A very historic event will happen in Gunnedah on November 12 when the first edition of the GUNNEDAH TIMES newspaper is published. The Dunnet family has owned the Narrabri Courier for the past 100 years and the owners have recognised the need for a local newspaper in Gunnedah. The newspaper will have a dedicated local office with local staff at 201-203 Conadilly Street (George Avard's building). The owners are passionate about local news and supporting the community and surrou...nds and they are looking forward to a close relationship with the many local businesses, schools and organisations in town and the shire villages. Local businesses and other community groups are invited to submit news and high resolution images for publication while supporting the newspaper through advertising. The Narrabri Courier staff will give full support to the staff at Gunnedah Times during the initial transition period. Initial contact can be made through the Narrabri Courier - Barlow Roberts / Business Development Executive ([email protected]) or editor Dylan Smith ([email protected]) See more

10.01.2022 World War 1 came to a shuddering halt for the Hanks brothers, John and Cecil, of Boggabri. The boys grew up in the Horsham district of Victoria, the family coming to the North West in the early 1900s to take up the property Green Vale at Wean. Oldest son John Thomas was 21 years and three months of age when he enlisted on February 15, 1916. Private Hanks was drafted into the 36th Battalion and sailed for the war on the troopship Beltana in May that year. He had been in action... for almost a year when he was killed in the assault on Messines Ridge on June 7, 1917. More than a dozen Gunnedah and district soldiers were killed in the battle. Younger brother Cecil joined up in September 1916 at the age of 19 years and seven months and was attached to the 34th Battalion. He reached the Western Front about the same time as his brother was killed. Three months later Cecil was involved in the Passchendaele bloodbath. On October 12, he was posted as wounded and missing in action, later amended to killed in action. There were massive Allied casualties in the Battle of Passchendaele, with 38,000 killed or wounded in the space of a few weeks. Another 12-15 soldiers from the Gunnedah district were killed in action. Soldiers were bogged down in mud so deep and thick that they drowned in it. SOLDIERS OF GUNNEDAH has just been published by the Gunnedah and District Historical Society. Cost $30 (ideal Fathers’ Day present). Available from Gunnedah Newsagency, Second Edition Bookshop and the Water Tower Museum, Gunnedah.

04.01.2022 Namoi Radar It is 10 years this week since the launch of the $4 million Namoi Weather Radar on Blackjack Mountain. The radar has modernised the way weather is forecast for those living within a 200km radius. Rising 22 metres from the summit of Blackjack, the high tech radar has helped improved forecasts for the region by providing additional information on rainfall, summer storms and winter cold fronts, with access to real time radar imagery via the Bureau of Meteorology we...bsite with warnings for severe weather, including hail an damaging winds. The unit provides uninterrupted coverage to Moree, Scone, Armidale, the Upper Hunter, and Mudgee and as far west as Coonamble. The Namoi Weather Radar came online in September 2010 after a year’s planning and construction with similar BOM weather radars established at Grafton, Sydney, Moree, and Wagga Wagga. Originally dubbed the Tamworth Weather Radar, the name was changed to Namoi Weather Radar after objections raised by the community. The radar was launched by the Australian Bureau of Meterology representatives Gordon McKay (NSW Flood Warning Centre Manger) , NSW Regional Director Barry Hanstrum and director Dr Greg Ayers. The radar was not without teething problems, however, going offline for more than two weeks in 2013 when the power supply to the heater on the output transmitter failed causing the radar to malfunction. There were issues with the manufacturing of the part which cost approximately $30,000. The bureau had plans to employ a more robust system once the radar was back online, to combat any similar future issues. See more
