23.01.2022 Kristy Gumbleton (nee Rowe) is one of the Gunnedah's greatest music success stories - as a young baritone player in our rural NSW town in the 90s, Kristy went o...nto win the 2005 Ern Keller International Soloist of the Year competition, and has 28 National and State Titles to her name. Kristy has performed in brass band championships at the highest level, having studied in Great Britain and performed across the UK and Europe, and has released two solo albums. "The Gunnedah Eisteddfod formed an integral part of my development as a young brass musician. It allowed valuable opportunities to perform each year, in a warm and welcoming environment. We were always lucky to have such excellent adjudicators, who gave feedback in an encouraging way. I have many fond memories growing up with the Gunnedah Eisteddfod." 13.01.2022 11:00 AM ANZAC DAY SERVICE - MT. WINDY PASTORAL, PIALLAWAY NSW First 2 x Photos are of: Great Grand Father of Malcolm Leggat SGT Ernest John Turner M.S.M (born ...15/10/1890, Woodstock NSW). 1st World War Enlisted 12 August 1914 Naval and Military Expeditionary Force, 1st Battalion, G Company, Tropical Unit. 19 August 1914 embarked on the HMAT A35 Berrima to Rabaul, Papua New Guinea to seize German New Guinea. This conflict was/is known as the First Action of Australia’s involvement in the 1st World War. Ernie kept a diary (almost daily) of his experiences in Papua New Guinea. Interesting to note that rum seemed to cure cold and fever, sleeplessness and even to get the taste of rotten cooked mutton out of their mouths. He wrote on Monday the 16th of November 1914 that he had a box on with a German who split his lip and had to get 2 stiches. I remember my Grandmother telling me, well apparently this German prisoner gave him a bit of cheek, so Ernie punched him in the face and the bugger turned around and hit Ernie back twice as hard. He also wrote that the supply ship hadn’t arrived, and they’d all run out of tobacco and the chaps are humming. Amazing how restrained people were back then with not using profanities or not admitting they did. Friday, February 20th, 1915, arrived back at Circular Quay. Monday 8th March 1915 enlisted in the AIF 19th Battalion (the Fighting Nineteenth), A Company, Friday 25th of June 1915 embarked on the HMAT Ceramic. Egypt, Gallipoli, France, Belgium. Recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal (M.S.M), recommended by Major General N.V. Smyth, for Gallantry during the offensive at Ypres October 1917. Recommended for the Military Medal by Brigadier General William Holmes for bravery in battle at Pozieres July/August 1916. Discharged 21st June 1919. 2nd World War Enlisted 2nd September 1940 Asia-Pacific Theatre with the rank of Warrant Officer 1st Class.
