25.01.2022 "Having characters [with autism] on a medium such as Sesame Street is wonderful because it is starting to normalise that everybody is different. We all have our little quirks that make us who we are."

24.01.2022 School holidays! Hopefully there will be a few milkshakes and boxes games in the next two weeks - see you back at school on Monday the 29th of April. Please email [email protected] in the meantime (phone calls are tricky with three kids at home).

20.01.2022 Yay! Proloquo2Go will also be going on sale at 50% off for Autism awareness / acceptance month! On sale April 2-4. This brings it down from AUD $400 to $200. ... *EDIT - Officeworks no longer offer a permanent 20% discount on iTunes cards, much to my disappointment as this is where I have always bought my iTunes cards. You can follow Gift Cards on Sale on FB, as they post up to date sales on gift cards, including iTunes cards. Woolworths and Australia Post just had sales, but it seems there are none this week. I will post any sales I come across between now and April 2-4! Thank you AssistiveWare for this awesome opportunity and your support of the autism community....

15.01.2022 Hooray for the start of Term 1! What is your child up to this year? Were feeling ready for some new starts in this house, and the kids have been content to roll into their school day rhythm. Today was my first day back in the office after a hefty break so please give me a call or email if youd like to catch up. Im so looking forward to seeing my familiar smiling faces again with school and clinic visits starting as of tomorrow, and Ill be in touch with new families this week - thank you for getting in touch over the holidays. This term Ill be focusing on the latest research for Speech Pathology in primary schools, supporting the Every Gunnedah Child initiative for 0-5 year olds and making sure local families continue to reach toward their goals. See you soon

15.01.2022 Supporting your childs language development Feeding your little one with words by Kirsty Murrell, Speech and Language Therapist

14.01.2022 I have to tell you something about me... I’ve walked your journey. I’m a mum of 2 boys and one of them- when he was a preschooler was a fussy eater. He was smal...l in size and very busy. He ate hardly anything and was very selective about what he ate. A few years ago, I found my feeding notes for him. Do you want to know what the first step was? Structured mealtimes- limit grazing. You see, I got in the habit of letting him eat whenever he wanted because I thought that at least that would mean he actually ate something. But the grazing meant that his overall intake was small, he only ate the foods he loved and he never tried anything new. Worse yet- he remained tiny. Think size 1 clothing as a 3 year old. Sound familiar? So parents, can I give you some advice? Write down a set mealtime routine with times of eating and what foods you will offer. 1. Include foods they eat, 2. foods they used to eat (and no longer eat) and 3. a similar food eg- slightly different biscuit. Keep persisting and don’t only offer foods they only like. Because if they only eat foods they like, like my son, they will never progress. In fact they may food jag and start refusing preferred foods (because they are sick of eating them every day) The good news is that I followed that hand written feeding plan all those years ago and now my 10 year old LOVES FOOD. He eats a wide variety and finds trying new food from different cultures exciting. But that doesn’t mean I have forgotten about the parental anxiety and worry that I felt 8 years ago You can do it too- start now, write your structured meal plan..... Ps- this photo is of him and a dippy egg. He never ate it - despite our perseverance he now eats egg but prefers it full cooked and not runny PPS- he is still skinny- tall and skinny despite eating great amounts and wonderful variety (still in a structured mealtime environment). He is also very active and great with sports. Genetics plays a role in how kids grow.

11.01.2022 Were very fortunate in Gunnedah and surrounding villages to have a number of early intervention advocates supporting our families to find out more about their childs communication - there are opportunities for preschool screeners and follow up programs. If you have any inkling of concern about how your child is speaking or listening, please call a Speech Pathologist as soon as you can. Early intervention is the way to go

10.01.2022 I am bursting with pride after having the privilege to watch and hear of the incredible students participating in this years Gunnedah Eisteddfod. I know first hand the communication hurdles some of them have jumped to get to that moment, highlighting how bright, strong and confident these stars really are. Congratulations to all who performed and their coaches - youre my personal inspiration.

04.01.2022 Its been a week since I got back from the Speech Pathology Australia conference - the info and inspiration I brought back has already had an impact on therapy visits. The journey was shared with my best friend who is a Speech Pathologist working with students from the University of Newcastle - while we were away from our jobs and families for a few nights, all we spoke about were our jobs and families! Im really excited to keep practising in line with the latest research and share what I know with local families. Thank you to those who supported my trip to the big smoke, it was worth it

01.01.2022 Ive heard this phrase used a lot online from other families who have a child with significant issues "he/she speaks to me through their eyes" or "without sayin...g a word they speak so much." I get it. I understand the heart behind these phrases. But I always want to ask -- what if they want to say more? What if what you think they are saying is not exactly what they have in mind? I see it all the time now with my kids. At one point in our journey as a family I felt like I could read my kids really well. But after they started actually autonomously telling me exactly what they were thinking I began to see that I wasnt always right. Many times when kids have very significant physical needs particularly CP with tone issues you will see a huge smile. But what Ive learned is that smile may not always mean "happy". It could mean "Im feeling left out and this is the only way I know to draw people in" or maybe "I anxious and not sure what the heck is happening next". Often times it can also mean, "I really have something important to tell you but my smile is the only tool I have -- please dont leave me I need you to understand." I see it all the time with Angela and Siah and Im often taken back when I have read them incorrectly. I feel like parents and professional are too quick to place a labels on individuals. Dont assume because they appear to be very infantile that they need to stay that way. Maybe, you will get no where and maybe their eyes will be the only source of connection. But isnt it worth a try? A REAL try. Not a "communication" 60 day trial. Im talking years of presuming that the sky is the limit. I look back on our early journey and I just want to kick myself. I will be the first to admit that I listened to a few doctors who told me Angela would stay at a 6 to 9 month old level for the rest of her life. I remember going into an IEP meeting and asking them to not teach academics and just work on life skills. Ahhhh! I could have never guessed we would be in the place we are now. Never guessed. I just want to say dont give up. Keep assuming that there just might be more behind that smile. And just maybe you dont know what they are really saying. How about we give our kids words, exposure and lots and lots of time and let them one day speak for themselves!
