25.01.2022 Phew My back is killing me and I'm ready for a cup of tea. I knew I would need extra time so I have to confess I sewed some blocks on Friday. I thought I could have them all done and put the quilt together Sunday. Well this morning I thought I'd have them done by lunchtime... I promised myself a cup of tea and a piece of cake just 3 more then 2 more you know toddler talk. I'm happy to say 60 blocks are done. The design wall and layout can wait.



24.01.2022 It is 7 months to Christmas. I have been making a Christmas Quilt in iso. This is the top. It is not my pattern so I can't share instructions I'm sorry.

22.01.2022 I love Missouri Star Quilt Co. I recommend having a look on YouTube. The projects I am most attracted to are based on 'layer cakes' aka 10"squares. I have selected my stash of blue and yellow fat quarters. Next have a look at Pinterest. Most Fat Quarters are about 20x22 inches. I have cut 2x10" squares from each fat quarter.

20.01.2022 What's on our mind is cooking. The first couple of years Peta and Margaret ran the weekend through Southern Adult education in Goulburn. We had volunteers provide food in each venue. A couple of years later Margaret spotted Pat Bush at the Gunning markets and to our delight we had a wide variety of slices over all the venues. Pat unfortunately died a couple of years ago but most people remember and miss her passionfruit slice. We don't have her recipe but here is a tried and true recipe with 2 versions for the base.



18.01.2022 We have 11 days to go to our virtual weekend. I have made 2 soups, some sandwiches, 2 slices and a cake. I need to buy some fruit but otherwise I think I'm set. So to the project, some people may like to finish projects they already have on the go. I have a few of those. I would like to challenge the others to have a look at your stash. Do you have fat quarters or yardage that has been waiting for this moment, (locked in away from shops)if like me you've been curating a textile time capsule now is time for some to appear.

18.01.2022 3 more sleeps I want to use fabric in my stash. I want to minimise difficulty So sample blocks. First one is Turnstyle from Missouri star quilt company. I like the look of it but there are a lot of bias seams so not this weekend.... Second a nine patch could be called super simple squares or ground cover. Cutting is a bit messy but sewing is easier. 17.01.2022 Theres no denying it's cold in Gunning this morning, but such a beautiful blue sky!



17.01.2022 This has nothing to do with fabric, yet, but it's new and full of potential.

16.01.2022 Hi folks, this time it's Peta....I thought I should start baking...so here's some mini banana muffins I made today.... 2 cups SR flour cup brown sugar cup rolled oats 1 cup milk... 1 egg 2 tblspns melted butter Spices to taste 3 bananas ( cos that's what I had ) See more

14.01.2022 How is everyone? I have made the passionfruit slice and the slab cake. Today I turned the chicken stock into soup. Our regular attendees would remember Maree's pumpkin soup... I made carrot soup because I have carrots I didnt have pumpkin, recipe is very similar. I fried onion garlic and ginger then added chopped potaoes and chopped carrots. I tossed them around until the potatoes started to change colour. I poured the stock over the top and let it simmer until the carrots were soft, then I tasted it and added some salt. You could add chilli, curry, tumeric or whatever takes your fancy. Then I mashed it with my stick blender. I had a bowl for dinner with smashed feta cheese. When it is cool enough I will freeze in serving sizes for my retreat in place in just under 3 weeks time.

14.01.2022 Hi Margaret here. I will be making the passionfruit slice and a cake. The cake is a family favourite. We call it the 1234 cake. 1 cup 250g of butter or margarine 2 cups of sugar 3 cups of SR flour 4 eggs and... 1 cup milk. A good cook would cream the butter and sugar, gently add eggs one at a time fold in sifted flour adding milk as you go. Being an economical cook I soften the butter then put everything in the mixmaster bowl cover the mixer and bowl with a tea towel and turn it up full speed until the mixture is lovely and creamy. I will pour it into a lined (or greased and floured) slab tin and bake it in a moderate oven for about half an hour. The same mixture could be used for party cakes. Half the mixture cooked in a ring tin is delicious too. When it is cooked I let it cool on a rack then cut it into squares and freeze them for the weekend. I will split the squares and fill with whipped cream. See more

14.01.2022 Have you stopped for lunch? We usually travel from several different venues to the Shire Hall where Maree Roche and family have soup sandwiches and dessert waiting for us. This year we have swapped and shared recipes so that we are together in spirit.



12.01.2022 Lunch has been a mixed bag over the years. 2003 and 2004 was snacky food from Dave at the Gunning Cafe. 2005 and 2006 was an experimental menu at the Gunning Function Centre. From 2007 onwards we have had lunch in the Shire Hall. Initially provided by Louise from Belmount Forest assisted by Maree, then Maree assisted by her extended family. This year the helpers have sat down early to lunch no speeches but missing the friendly faces.

12.01.2022 I have just started following a hashtag on instagram #porchquiltshow I might put my GPW project up when it is finished.

09.01.2022 Following the cancellation of GPW2020, the team who has brought you nearly 20 years of Patchwork Weekends in Gunning has taken this time to look at ways to cement the future of this signature event in the district's creative calendar. Started by locals for locals, and with a proud tradition of operating without grants, sponsorship or extraneous fundraising, the award-winning GPW is a well-loved, well-established tradition. Each year our attendees have ideas, make suggestions... and identify improvements and where we can, we embrace ideas and act on these suggestions. Our much-loved Finish And Talk group, October Finishing Day and raffles are all examples of this approach. However with just a handful of volunteers, we've been loath to "bite off more than we can chew". In part, this is because our energy and time is limited but is mostly about preserving the soul of the event - characteristics like "lovely home made food", "value for money" "wonderful atmosphere" "the friendships"and "great tutors". And so it comes to this: we need a new set of faces, energy to ensure the event continues. While we've had individuals make wonderful offers of help over the years, the event has grown beyond that which can be addressed by individuals and into one that requires a more formal structure to preserve its future. Luckily, and with more synergy than either group initially dared to imagine, Creative Gunning is in a position to provide support, assistance and direction into the future, while maintaining the independence and unique GPW branding. Through the mechanism of a new sub-committee, which will include any of the original organisers who still have time, the event will transition to being presented by Creative Gunning Inc. This means there will be a GPW in 2021. It will be pared-back to meet the requirements of COVID Safety and to ensure a quality transition .

08.01.2022 Did everyone stay safe today? This time next year we will be heading out for dinner. We have eaten at The Bentley, The Merino Cafe, The Old Hume, travelled by bus to Lake George and had caterers in the Shire Hall. Peta Maree and I have always tried to keep it local. We often seat in excess of 40 people so it's not always easy. I would like a platter like this but I'm having soup and cheese scones followed by frozen dessert from the servo. Roll on next year.

07.01.2022 So to bring you up to date. I strained off the bones and put the stock in the fridge with the intention of making pumpkin soup and freezing it for the weekend. Best laid plans and all that I went for a walk yesterday and came home 10yrs older. I stepped on a pine thingy twisted my ankle, fell to my knees then crashed to my right shoulder. It happened quickly but thoughts sped like lightning through my head: is the phone alright (I heard it hit the ground) am I about to break a bone, ouch that hurts then lastly how in God's name am I going to get up from here? Well I did and I walked home, no broken bones. No cooking. Tomorrow I will start some biscuits and slices. Can't have a retreat without sweet inspiration.

06.01.2022 So far so good. I love symmetry. To see little squares of fabric come together and form patterns gladens my heart.

06.01.2022 I (Margaret) thought I'd reminisce today. Our first weekend was June 2003 just a few weeks after I had spent a couple of weeks in hospital. While I was in there my Auntie Kate and Uncle Charlie visited me nearly every day. They brought me a cassette player and a set of earphones. One of the stories they brought me on tape was a murder mystery whose title included the words Jacob's Ladder. Through this story I discovered there is a plant of this name and a patchwork block. Lis...tening to this and other stories took me completely away from the hospital. I would often fall asleep and have to retrace my steps when I woke up. I felt I was slowly being nudged and drawn out of the hospital into new possibilities. When I was home again and preparing for our first great weekend I looked up the patchwork block. I decided to make a quilt and work out how to do it using the rotary cutter and cutting mat instead of the traditional manner of templates. The following year I taught a version that used 6 fat quarters. I thought this would be a good method for beginners. Once I had made that lapsized quilt (first photo)I did it again using dressmaking fabric and complementary fat quarters. 03.01.2022 On a regular weekend we would meet in the hall for afternoon tea and show and tell. How is everyone coping? I'm wrecked.

02.01.2022 5 more sleeps Have you decided on your project? Have you stashed enough food for the weekend? By next year the shire hall (in addition to the current heating) will have reverse cycle air con. Now that's something to look forward to!

01.01.2022 We think we will call this year VPR, virtual patchwork retreat. First prepare your food. Today I, Margaret will make chicken stock. When I buy a BBQ chicken I strip the meat and put the bones, skin, tiny scraps etc back into the bag the chicken came in and pop it into the freezer. Today I will fry up some onions maybe spices with the bones then cover with as much water as I feel like, in a saucepan that is easy to find. I will let it simmer on the stove for a few hours. You could also put all of the above in the crock pot overnight. Then, when you are happy with the stock, or sick of it sitting around, strain the bones etc to reveal the stock. Store in the fridge or freezer depending on when you feel like making your soup.
