15.01.2022 Theyre out of lockdown! After 2 weeks of aviary rest to help an injured foot, George and his adoring little sweetheart Mildred were able to roam around again today for the first time. They didnt waste any time having a forage around after breakfast and even hung around Trevor, who was the accidental instigator of Georges injured foot. ... Ill be monitoring his condition closely as he is still a bit ginger on that foot but doesnt appear to be in too much pain. He has only just come off pain relief so Ill see how he goes.

11.01.2022 A couple of random nature pics from this mornings foggy feed round.
10.01.2022 After finally being able to experience fresh air, sunlight and swimming for the first time upon their rescue, George and Mildred are on 2 weeks of aviary rest after Georges foot was accidentally stepped on by Trevor the turkey George is on daily pain relief and he is just over half way through his rest period. Although not as good as the huge dam he was just getting used to, he is making good use of the pool in his aviary, and as always, he has his best buddy Mildred by hi...s side Theyve had lots of treats, and both seem quite content and relaxed during their lockup. Its a huge improvement on the filthy conditions from which they were rescued from and its necessary to give his foot the best possible chance to improve. He is barely limping at all now, but its hard to tell at this point how much of the improvement is due to the pain relief and how much of it is due to scar tissue forming and helping to stabilise the joint. The good news is that there has been a big improvement in his condition and they are only days away now from being able to once again experience the new world they had both embraced so beautifully
10.01.2022 SASHIE Update: Yesterday, Dr Alana was back out at Gunyah to give Sashie another lot of treatment to his front feet. Both front hooves have vertical sand cracks, a painful condition which (in Sashies case) has no easy fix. A week ago we drilled out as much damaged hoof as we could, in the hope that over time and with numerous regular treatments, we could drill out most of the damage and see new healthy hoof growing. He has been on pain relief and is in a smaller paddock th...an normal so that he can get some rest. Unfortunately there is still an aweful lot of damage present, which extends down deep to where the blood supply is. There is also a new crack that has already begun to form over the past week since his last treatment, which is not what we want to see This condition in Sashies case is partially hereditary and is also due to his conformation and the environment. We are going to assess the situation again in a couple of weeks time, in the hope that we see some improvement. Unfortunately due to the deterioration and further damage we have seen in the past week it looks like we may be fighting a losing battle Please keep him in your thoughts and pray for a miracle. If you would like to help with Sashies treatment costs, your support is most gratefully appreciated, particularly during this difficult time for all http://www.gunyah.org/donate.html
09.01.2022 Not sure if these unusual clouds signify that rain is coming, but it sure smells and feels like theres some on the way. The bureau keep changing their mind about whats in store here tomorrow, so who knows!
09.01.2022 "Had my breakfast, what are we doing next?"
06.01.2022 "Good morning strange looking sheep" says Keira lamb :)
04.01.2022 Georges foot was accidentally stepped on by Trevor the turkey recently, and he has been limping. He has been on pain relief and I was initially hoping that it was a sprain that would heal quickly. While Dr Alana was here yesterday, we took x-rays to determine the exact extent of the damage. Unfortunately the results have come back showing a dislocation :( Although we could sedate George and try to fix the dislocation, there is no guarantee that we can. I personally do not w...ant to risk putting him under sedation, especially when there is no guarantee we can help. Unfortunately he will need to be confined to the aviary with Mildred for a couple of weeks while getting daily pain relief. We will assess how he is going then but it is hoped that if kept fairly quiet on pain management, scar tissue development may help to stabilise it.
04.01.2022 A huge thank you to the Herald Sun for running an article yesterday on Keira lamb! And an equally huge thank you to photographer Tim Carrafa for taking the very cute pics
03.01.2022 Theres nothing like a turkey serenade to start the day!
03.01.2022 Keira is growing up so quickly!
02.01.2022 Good morning Little Goat! Ill never forget the day of her rescue in 2015. I was out and about with a couple of friends picking up supplies, one of whom was 8 years old. I had no idea that an unexpected goat rescue was about to come out of nowhere. The then unnamed goatie needed a lifeline, so we dropped everything to rescue her and get her to Gunyah for the urgently needed care she had been without for some time. Although she had been in a state of neglect for some time, s...he still had enough energy to walk the short distance towards our rescue vehicle and was relaxed enough doing so. So as to not alarm her by suddenly trying to carry her, we just let her wander behind us. Its almost as if shed been waiting for us to arrive and help her and she followed us like shed known us forever. My 8 year old friend who was walking in front, turned around and said "come on Little Goat", to which Little Goat responded with the cutest bleat And that was how this little sweetheart got her name
02.01.2022 A huge thank you to Dr Alana and vet nurse Ellie, for coming out once again to Gunyah today to undertake a number of things. It was Ellies day off today, so an especially big thank you to her for giving up her day First on the list was a quick check over of Keira lamb. As is the case with some orphans, she has not taken all that readily to a bottle. Ive got a few different teats and tricks that have worked with orphans over the years, and thankfully she has now made the c...onnection and is doing well. I was a bit worried about her blood sugar levels last night, so wanted to get Dr Alana to give her a check over while she was here. Thankfully all is good with her and will get even better now that she is more readily accepting of nourishment from something that isnt her mum. Next on the list was to have another look at Archies 3rd eyelid, to see how its healing after we recently removed a cancerous section. There was one small section we thought may need to be removed via cryosurgery, but the good news is the remaining tissue is all looking really good, so we wont need to do anything further at this stage. Next was the biggest and most time consuming job for today... Sashies feet. He has vertical sand cracks in both front feet. Caused from genetics and the environment, it is a very painful condition and there is no simple fix in his case. He has been on pain relief. Both feet had to have damage removed, where the hoof has tried to heal itself. This is done with a special drill that has a bit on the end that looks a bit like sandpaper. He had a block inserted under his left foot, to help take some of the pressure off when he walks. He will also get one on his right foot, but that will be done in a subsequent visit. Sashie will need several follow up treatments, and there is no guarantee that we will be able to greatly improve his condition. We need to try and do whatever we can for him to give him the best possible quality of life and take one day at a time. He will have another treatment later next week. Next on the list was to x-ray George the ducks left foot. Unfortunately Trevor stepped on him and he has been a bit lame :( He has been on pain relief, so we need an x-ray to see whether its broken or just sprained. We are awaiting the results and will work out how we can best help George once we know exactly what we are dealing with. He is getting around just fine, hes just a bit ginger. So its been a big day but overall its been a good one! If youve been keeping up with the latest news youll know that there have been quite a number of vet visits lately for Archie and Sash. If you would like to help, your support is always greatly appreciated, especially during this tough time for all. http://www.gunyah.org/donate.html
