25.01.2022 Here's one to try... Sounds like a pretty keen gardener getting tomatoes ready about a week after the winter solstice, but I've always been a fan of breaking rules and experimenting in the vegetable garden. My advise would be to watch the humidity as it'll be dry near most heaters, try and maintain a bit of airflow, and stay on top of dust building up on the leaves - which and clog stomata and block the amount of light reaching the photosynthetic cells.... Good Luck!
24.01.2022 Lovely garden to work on! Here's a few snippets of the progress. I feel like I've trimmed about a kilometer of box hedges! Backyard before and after pics to come... 23.01.2022 Sometimes plant pathogens just aren't worth the trouble! That's exactly why this troublesome Photinia hedge was replaced with a cultivar of Acmena smithii, the native Lilly Pilly. It's been a great result so far and we've saved countless headaches (and chemical applications) down the track by using a better adapted species for Ballarats lovely climate.... #gurksgardening #gardenerballarat #hedgetrimming #hedge #planting #topiary #photinia #lillypilly #acmenasmithii #notsyzygsium
23.01.2022 I really enjoy getting hedges back into shape, and it's good to be reunited with this one after a few months break. #ballaratsmallbusiness #ballaratgardener #hedgetrimming #beforeandafter #reunitedagain @ Ballarat, Victoria

18.01.2022 As a graduate ecologist and self employed gardener, it really is great to work with native flora! It'll be fun to continue shaping up this section of the garden and monitor the progress. 15.01.2022 If you or someone you know has an overwhelming amount of Gorse to control, give Briody from Victorian Gorse Taskforce a yell! It's an invasive and unpleasantly prickly plant in the Fabaceae (pea) family. A remnant from colonist days and occasionally mistanken by people none the wiser as native flora. It's seed pods rupture when ripe and catapult the seed some meters away, where they can lay dormant in the soil for over 50 years! Without management, they form very large dens...e patches that change the ecosystem dynamic and also present a risk for bushfire. ...I'd get on top of it asap!

12.01.2022 Organic control of Aphids using neem oil. You have to make sure to cover the undersides of the leaves too! This treatment (and a follow up if needed) will keep things in check for now. Over the long term the best solution for Aphids is to create an environment that attracts their natural predators as part of an integrated pest management plan. A holistic approach so to speak. ... #gurksgardening #gardenerballarat #topiary #hedgetrimming #pruning #pestmanagement #integratedpestmanagement #aphids #gardenpests #neemoil #solosprayers
09.01.2022 It's been a satisfying process bringing this garden back to its former glory. 09.01.2022 Homegrown fruit and vegetables are healthy and rewarding to grow, not to mention full of flavours that the big commercial growers seems to lack! #gurksgardening #gardenerballarat #vegetablegarden #homegrown #wolfgarten
08.01.2022 Logs are essential habitat for small creatures and are breeding grounds for the insects, lizards and other creatures like to eat. If practical, trees or branche...s are best left where they fall. If you have a pile of timber on your property, think about spreading it out with the following tips in mind. 1. Put them in areas of revegetation or native habitat where there are few old trees 2. Put bark and leaves underneath and around the logs. This reduces grass from overgrowing the log and rotting material becomes food for insects and animals 3. Put them in small piles for reptiles to bask and so birds can perch and look out for predators or prey 4. For logs or branches with hollows, balance them off the ground. Birds and bats will use hollows that are a metre off the ground. These great photos are courtesy of a contractor called 'Slim', who dismantled huge piles of logs on a property protected with a conservation covenant and distributed them into smaller piles for habitat. #logrelocation #habitat #tips #conservation

05.01.2022 Well this ice confirms that winter is here. Very frosty, but can't complain about the sunshine! On that note... extra potassium and silica will strengthen your plants cell walls, which protects them from rupturing when they freeze. Hint: Try some seaweed extract or a good quality organic fertiliser to help out the frosty little buggers.... #ballaratbusiness #ballaratgardens #lawnmaintenance #hedgetrimming #topiary #australianflora #frosty #tritonicicles
04.01.2022 STOP FEEDING MINCE TO MAGPIES! Snake and bird re-locator Lana Field says feeding them raw mince can cause all sorts of health dramas. "Mince is actually reall...y high in the wrong nutrients and when they eat it, it draws calcium from their bones. The other thing that happens is it can get stuck in the bottom of their beak, and it can actually rot a hole in their beak." So what can you feed them? Lana says lean strips of meat are OK Pass it on! Repost from: ABC South West : Daniel Sutton
04.01.2022 Check out the sori on my Korean rock fern (Polystichum tsus-simense)! As you swipe you will get a closer look at the anatomy of these incredible structures. Sor...i are the spore producing structures of ferns. They are capped by a structure called an indusium, which kind of looks like a transparent shell in these pics. Underneath are the sporagium, which is where the spores are formed. If you look closely enough, these sporangium are ringed by a backbone-like structure called an annulus. As the annulus dries, it puts pressure on the sporangium to the point that the whole thing eventually ruptures, catapulting the spores out into the environment. See more
01.01.2022 500 local native tubestock planted at Woowookarung Regional Park this week for Parks Victoria and Friends of Canadian Corridor, Ballarat! This ex-forestry land will now be off to a great start through the next phase of it's ecological succession in developing an overstory. Of significant value is the Yarra Gum (Eucalyptus yarraensis) which is considered rare in Victoria. 01.01.2022 What a great day working out in the country on this lovely cottage garden! Plenty of winter pruning to do, but it's always enjoyable working on nice properties like this. On a side note, the John Deere self propelled went to the mower doctors today and will hopefully be in action soon @ Meredith, Victoria #gardenerballarat #gurksgardening #ballaratsmallbusiness #lavender #cottagegarden #hedgetrimming #topiary
01.01.2022 This selection of fruit trees will bounce back vigorously next season and should be pruned again to encourage fruit production and train certain branches. The shape is somewhere between espalier and traditional pruning. I've been told they give out quite a good yield... the fruit will be a breeze to pick down the track! ... #gurksgardening #gardenerballarat #ballaratsmallbusiness #fruittrees #pruning #hondapowerequipment @ Ballarat, Victoria
