Guru Nanak was ahead of his times in preaching equality of all people including gender equality. Three basic tenets of Guru Nanak’s teachings are (1) Naam Japo Constant contemplation upon God’s Name, (2) Kirt Karo Earn livelihood through honest means, and (3) Wand Chakko Share your earnings with others, out of love and compassion. He preached that ‘There is one humanity under one God.’ He also taught that God loves all humans and that one must live a life of service, humility, truthful living and meditation in order to feel closeness to God. He also preached that one can live a normal life and yet strive for spiritual enlightenment. Guru Nanak taught his followers that they should respect other religions as they want theirs to be respected and laid a foundation of a true pluralistic society.
