25.01.2022 Not all communication is speech. Around 1.2 million Australians have communication disability. Though, communication disability is largely invisible. Unseen an...d out-of-sight. That’s why during Speech Pathology Week (23-29 August), we strive to raise awareness of communication disability and the important work speech pathologists do to ensure every Australian is ‘communicating with confidence’. This short video highlights some of the many and varied ways Australians communicate. www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au/spw2020 #SPweek #SpeakUp4CommRights #WeSpeechies #SLPeeps #slp2B

24.01.2022 Flash back to a few weeks ago when our first year students song with Advocacy Rep, Portia Thomson, attend the Hope for Health Teddy Bear Hospital. Thanks to our awesome Speech Pathology student volunteers, a bunch of Prep & Year 1 students of Beenleigh State School we’re able to learn about healthy ears! Partnering with Hope 4 Health, the Teddy Bear Hospital is an initiative that teaches young students all about health! We even learnt that a cold can cause our ears to hurt. It is best to tell our parents and see a doctor (Dr Duggal the Teddy Bear Doctor in this Case). Our big teddy bear, Hugo, had a fun day out, having his ears checked by all the students. Thank you to Mathea, Michael, Anmol, Mathilde and Portia. And big thanks to all those involved with the Teddy Bear Hospital!

14.01.2022 Did you know that around one million Australians have a swallowing difficulty? Today, Speech Pathology Australia hosts Swallowing Awareness Day to raise awareness about dysphagia, the impact of swallowing problems, and the work that Speech Pathologists do to help those with swallowing problems.

13.01.2022 We're back at university, but many of our students have been hard at work and busy over the university break! Priya, Amanda, and Mathea had the opportunity to volunteer at the first Australian Aphasia camp, where they provided support to individuals with aphasia.

11.01.2022 In second year, our students are attending placement throughout the semester so here’s a placement update to brighten your day! Mika, Laura, Emily, Portia, Rach and Dee are currently doing a stage 3 placement at a public hospital in Brisbane with an Adult caseload. Our caseload includes assessment and management of Aphasia, Dysarthria, Dysphagia and voice. At the beginning of the placement, we were provided with the opportunity to observe our clinical educators provide ther...apy with a variety of patients. However, currently we are providing all therapy sessions via telehealth. We are all enjoying placement with highlights including VFSS analysis, planning and leading communication groups both in person and via telehealth, observing multidisciplinary team meetings, assessment analysis and bedside assessments. It has been a novel challenge to modify our approach to therapy and continue to connect with our clients online due to the current environment, however the support of our clinical educators and Griffith staff have made this placement a fantastic opportunity for the development of our clinical skills. #askusaquestion #guss #slp #slp2be #placement #covid_19 #shareyourstory #griffithuniversity

11.01.2022 Hello all! Thank you for following our Dysphagia Awareness this past week couple week. We hope you have all learnt something about swallowing and how SLPs can be of help! Let’s finish with a favourite recipe in our recent Dysphagia Kitchen Experience. Alix & Bridie, two of our second year students, prepared Zucchini Balls for their Soft and bite size IDDSI level recipe. It was a flavour explosion with a softer texture and smaller bite size pieces a perfect meal for easy chewing and safe swallowing. This recipe uses basic pantry ingredients and is fun to create. Keep an eye out for the recipe in GUSS’ upcoming Beyond the Blender cookbook second edition. Thanks again for supporting us! Check out the comments for a photo of the finished product! #dysphagia #swallowaware2020 #softandbitesized #IDDSI #IDDSIlevel6
