13.01.2022 As you now know, smiling has so many wonderful & positive effects. Did you also know that the smile also deeply relaxes our facial muscles and leads to the whole body feeling more relaxed? When you soften muscles in your cheeks and eyes, the edges of your mouth naturally turn upwards and facial tension dissolves. Studies have shown that holding any particular facial expression can mimic in us the feeling of that emotion, and marked changes can be found in our autonomic... nervous systems solely from our chosen expression. Even when we don’t feel like smiling, holding a half-smile has been shown to help stimulate positive emotions which naturally puts us into a more relaxed state, and lets our sympathetic nervous system know that we are OK. I’ve started being more mindful in practising the half-smile in my meditation. It’s something I never really paid much attention to until I read more about it. We hold tension in so many areas of our body, and consciously holding a gentle half-smile in my practice has really highlighted how much more relaxed I can feel. Other ways you can practice incorporating the half-smile include: Placing a post it note on your mirror with the word smile. Having this in front of you when you’re getting ready can serve as a reminder to practice the half smile. Give it a go! You will absolutely feel your body and energy shift. If you’ve been triggered and are able to catch yourself (potentially in the pause) before reacting to something or someone, you can implement the half smile immediately. Admittedly this takes practice! But again, this practice can enable you to create a new and more positive response and outcome. With the amount of time we spend either on the phone, or at our desk waiting on-line, it’s actually the perfect opportunity to also practice the half-smile. As I mentioned, our smiles are felt and heard! This is what is making me smile today A beautiful snack plate of a carrot, blueberries and frozen sweet potato that shellie made My emails back up and running! Uplifting messages I overheard my kids receiving from their teachers What’s making you smile today? #gutzy

08.01.2022 Self appreciation, for me, falls into the same buckets as self compassion and self love. We all to an extent intellectually know the importance of having a healthy dose of these things, and yet it’s still so challenging to truly nurture ourselves this way. You may have heard me share before that science tells us we think between 60,000-70,000 thoughts per day! 90% of those thoughts are the same thoughts as the day before - that’s really mind blowing if you sit with that for ...a minute. Thinking the same thoughts means making the same choices, demonstrating the same behaviours and ultimately creating the same experiences. Our patterns are so embedded within us that unless we become aware of the thoughts we have and the things we say to ourselves, we don’t give ourselves the opportunity to break the pattern and create a new experience. As with anything we want to change or improve on, a conscious and consistent practice is required, and that can be challenging. For all that I know and all that I try to do, I still have my days where there is so much noise in my head. Noise of all the things I feel I haven’t done, should be doing, not doing enough of, haven’t done good enough and on and on it goes. I had one of those days last week, and the noise in my head was SO persistent. Does this sound familiar at all? I ended up saying SHHH! out loud just to get it to stop or at least break up the incessant noise! It worked by the way..worth trying for sure!! Another practice that’s worth trying is allowing yourself to recognise and focus on the things you do that are valuable for yourself and for other people. We are so quick to dismiss our talents, feats and achievements, big and small, and I truly believe we need to make more room for the practice of self appreciation, self kindness and self love. So if you’re stuck thinking of some things that are worthy of your own appreciation, I’ve provided some ideas for you below. We are human, and can be hard on ourselves and it’s not self serving at all. It’s exhausting and debilitating and if we are so easily and able to to lift others up, then surely we can do the same for ourselves - with some practice. @ Gutzy

07.01.2022 SMILINGI love it! It’s something so simple and yet so powerful! Try looking at someone happy or smiling and not smile yourself, it’s contagious! The part of your brain that is responsible for your controlling the facial expression of smiling is an unconscious automatic response area. Meaning that smiling can be completely unconscious, particularly when it comes to our habit of mimicking another person's smile.... Smiling not only has the power to elevate your mood, but it can also change the moods of others and make things happier. I particularly love that! When you smile, dopamine, endorphins and serotonin are all released into your bloodstream, making not only your body relax but also lower your heart rate and blood pressure. Life throws us our challenges, and we can’t always control what happens to us. There are and will be times we all get in negative psychological and emotional states, but when you find yourself in that place smiling and laughing can trick your mind into thinking you’re feeling better than you actually are, changing your internal and external experience, and brightening your perspective on life. So just keep smiling! It totally works!! #smiling #contagious #gutzy #changeyourmindchangeyourbody

06.01.2022 I’ve been reflecting more on the theme of perseverance this week. The more I think about it the more I realise we’ve all be persevering whether we like it to not! Persevering with home schooling, persevering with working from home, persevering with not having access to some of the luxuries we’ve become accustomed too, persevering with not seeing the people we love and care about the most, and the list goes on.... I’m not sure if you’ve seen it as perseverance - perhaps it’s simply seen as not having a choice. Yet I believe even amongst the challenges and hardships, we’ve still had choices. I recognise the incredibly difficult times that we’ve encountered and experiences people are going through. However, how we’ve each individually chosen to respond and adjust our thinking, our doing, our being to so many things have all been choices of ours. And there are not any right or wrong ones within that, it’s about what’s been right for you. So I’m wondering if we can all take this time and reflect on the inner strength we all actually have - and when it comes to seeking out other areas in our life we wish to pursue, whatever that may be, that we in fact all have everything we need in us to strive forward, persevere, and chip away, even when things aren’t going the way we planned or want, or are so uncomfortable. For all the negative views we can take with what’s been happening in the world, perhaps acknowledging your resolve, and your ability to preserve is the exact thing you needed to be shown. Soooo, if there is anything else in your life you want, use this this time as a positive reference point when you need to and reflect on all that you are capable of! And persevere with whatever is in your hearts desire!! Lots of GUTZY love Stefanie #perseverance #innerstrength #gutzy #changeyourmindchangeyourbody
