22.01.2022 QUICK WEEKEND TIP! Clean brake dust off regularly Brake dust contains all sorts of nasty stuff. If you leave it too long, the combination of road grime, moisture and heat from your brakes will bake it on to your wheels. Brake dust normally clings to wheels with static electricity so a damp sponge and clean cold water is the best way to get it off. ... 18.01.2022 The VEHICLE HANDLING MODEL Did you know that any condition of Vehicle Handling can be categorised into the following simple headings? STABILITY - RESPONSE - BAL...ANCE - GRIP Any state of vehicle handling (eg. wheel spin, snap-oversteer, turn-in understeer, brake-turn instability, etc.) will fall under one of these headings. Doesnt that make it easier to start solving handling problems of a racing car? We will be teaching how to use the Vehicle Handling Model at our Advanced Workshop in Feb 11-22 in Sydney, but lets have a quick look at it here. We represent the categories in a diamond shape, as per the image. This shape is chosen intentionally because it highlights that Stability is the most important (and should be adressed first) and Grip is the least important (and should be adressed last). As for the other two, Balance and Response, you can choose depending on which you need to achieve the required Stability. STABILITY is the most important because an unstable car is one that occupies the driver and reduces a drivers confidence. Its also risky. A stable racing car is one that maintains its direction despite any external disturbances (bump on the road, wind, bump from another car). You can imagine how difficult it would be to drive a rally car down a hill if every bump on the road caused the rear of the car to come around?! RESPONSE is usually the next important because when we chase STABILITY its almost always at the cost of RESPONSE. A car that responds well is one that gives the desired change in state in the required time, eg. a car that turns-in well gives the desired amount of direction change as quick as the driver needs it to happen. BALANCE is the general understeer/oversteer characteristic of the car. Interestingly, some people mistake poor response with turn-in understeer and instability with exit oversteer. However, this mistake has a positive in it - they are indeed related! GRIP is the last on our agenda, but once we have solved our other issues, grip will gives us performance. Again, people often confuse BALANCE with poor GRIP, by saying they are lacking front Grip (understeer). Using the VHM we can see that they are indeed related and should be treated as such. The take-away from this post is this: vehicle handling can be simply categorised. Importantly, the categorised are ranked on their importance and are INTERELATED. Making a change to one will result another and this is the key to knowing which change to make to the car. To understand how the cars setup affects each category, join us at the Advanced Workshop in Sydney Feb 11-22, 2019. As a special offer, if you have made it this far down the post, heres a video from our Vehicle Handling section from our RE01 course in 2016: https://youtu.be/F7r6nD3cw9w

14.01.2022 QUICK WEEKEND TIP! Your tyre wear pattern can tell you a lot about any problems you might be having with the wheel/suspension setup. The first two signs to look for are over- and under-inflation.
