25.01.2022 A reminder to keep the mineral blocks up this year

24.01.2022 Some of the sweet faces we saw at the clinic yesterday. We hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend.

23.01.2022 We would like to welcome Heather to the team here at GDVS. Heather has lived in the Guyra area for about 5 years. Prior to this she went to Agricultural College in Emerald, QLD and she also plans to complete her certificate in vet nursing. Heather has a love of the land, she enjoys riding horses and her cattle dog Ditch is never far from her side. Welcome to the team Heather.

22.01.2022 A big happy birthday to Amy our fabulous vet nurse

22.01.2022 Introducing our little fighter Zeus. Zeus presented to our clinic very unwell earlier in the year. He was lethargic, not wanting to eat and had yellow gums (jaundice). Blood results told us that he had a dangerously low red blood cell count (or PCV). Normally the PCV of a healthy animal is around 35-55%. Zeus had a PCV of only 15%. Further work up lead to the diagnosis of a disease called immune mediated haemolytic aneamia (IMHA). IMHA is a potentially fatal disease, where ...the body starts attacking its own red blood cells, thinking that they are foreign. IMHA requires aggressive therapy. In Zeus's case, his PCV continued to drop and got as low as 10%. Zeus was started on high doses of immunosuppressive drugs. An emergency blood transfusion was also performed, the blood was donated by a beautiful greyhound called Zara. Unfortunately, Zeus’s body quickly destroyed the new blood and a further 2 transfusions were required. Eventually the immunosuppressive drugs started to work and Zeus stabilised. After a long slow recovery and lots of TLC, we are so happy to say that Zeus is now doing well.

22.01.2022 Ainslie here I just couldn’t leave without saying a personal goodbye to all of the lovely clients (and their animals) I have met over the years. So many happy waggy tails, some very sad goodbyes and everything in between. It has been a privilege to work with so many beautiful animals and their owners. I will miss you all greatly. Also, a huge thank you to Leisa and the wonderful team at GDVS. I have loved working with you guys and have learned so much off all of you. Leisa, you have been the greatest mentor, support and friend to myself, Sam and Grace. We love you!! We will miss you and the team so much, but we will definitely be back for plenty of visits

18.01.2022 We had Poppy in for a vaccination and health check today. Poppy was recently adopted from Tamworth pound and she looks pretty pleased about it. We love her happy smile

15.01.2022 Myth Busting! 'My pet is too old to be desexed' We hear this a lot and it could not be further from the truth. Pets still benefit from desexing no matter how old they are. Today we desexed a lovely 14 year old cat called Molly.... Molly has always been an inside cat and she has never had a litter of kittens. However, her owner noticed that she had recently gone off her food and was not feeling well. We examined her and found that she had a life threatening infection in her uterus known as pyometra. She was desexed today and her pus filled uterus was removed. We are sure she will have many happy healthy years to come. July is desexing month. We are offering 25% off all desexing surgeries. There is only one week left! So call ASAP to book.

14.01.2022 WARNING!!! Local graziers, there is a bit of chilly weather coming our way so please have all your stock in friendlier weather safe paddocks.

13.01.2022 AUGUST IS DENTAL MONTH. Did you know that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of gum disease by the age of three. Poor oral hygiene can cause many health concerns for your pet. Pets can experience bad breath, pain, tooth loss and in more severe cases kidney, liver and heart valve infection. ... For the month of August we are having FREE dental checks with our wonderful nurses. Our nurses will grade your pets teeth from 1-4 and give advice regarding the best course of treatment. All dental procedures done in the month of August will receive a complementary sample of the Hills Dental Diet and Greenies dental treats. We recently had Sophie the greyhound in for a scale and polish. Goodbye smelly breath and hello happier dog and owner.

13.01.2022 Parvovirus warning We have seen a number of Parvovirus cases recently. Parvovirus is a highly contagious and often deadly disease of dogs. It is spread in faeces and can be carried in dirt on your shoes or vehicle. There is a highly effective vaccine available to help prevent this horrible cruel disease. ... If you have unvaccinated dogs or puppies they are at risk. Parvovirus is not just a town problem, in fact a lot of the Parvovirus we see is from dogs on isolated properties who have never had Parvo before. Call us today if you wish to book in for vaccination. Photo of Black and Rusty, their owner had them in for vaccination and microchipping last week

11.01.2022 Annie recently presented to our clinic with a very sore leg. Dr Tracey took some radiographs and they showed that Annie had broken both bones in her front right leg. Dr Tracey realigned the bones under anaesthetic and applied a splint. Lucky for Annie, her owners provided fantastic after care and kept her quiet while she was healing. After 8 weeks the splint was removed. Gentle exercise was slowly introduced. We are now happy to report that Annie has made a full recovery. ... 09.01.2022 NO EMERGENCY/AFTER HOURS THIS WEEKEND 13-15th NOVEMBER This weekend, the team at Guyra District Vets is off to the coast to celebrate coming through some fairly difficult years. The clinic fire (2018), drought & bushfires (2019), and covid have thrown up some challenges. Now it is time for us to reflect and celebrate all that we have achieved. I (Leisa) would like to take this opportunity to thank my staff for everything that they have done and continue to do . I am so blessed to have such an amazing supportive team!

08.01.2022 The story of Sage, the worlds cutest goat Sage the Pygmy goat presented recently because she had stopped eating, she had a large swelling under her jaw and her gums were white (they should be pink). A blood test showed that she had dangerously low levels of red blood cells. We also examined her faeces under the microscope and discovered lots of worm eggs. The swelling under her jaw was actually oedema. Also known as bottle jaw. One of the most common causes of this is l...ow blood protein levels due to internal parasite. Sage needed a life saving blood transfusion. Dr Ainslie and nurse Heather performed this with the help of Ricky, the blood donor goat. Sage was given an appropriate drench and lots of TLC. We are happy to report she is now doing well and a follow up worm egg count showed she had ZERO worm eggs in her system. Goats are very susceptible to internal parasites. We recommend regular worm egg counts to determine an appropriate drenching strategy.
