25.01.2022 What we learnt at the markets this morning: Jicama is pronounced Hicama (Hi as in Hi and cama as in karma). It is served on the streets fresh with chilli sauces or citrus juice on it. It does not go brown like apples and potatoes. Have some in the fridge for over a week and still white. Will just leave it there and see. It is great baked and just do like potatoes. Great heath food one such place in town wanted us to grow and supply.... Treat the toxic seeds with boiling water and let it cool to increase the germination rate. But keep the water as a spray for bugs in your vegi garden. It can be hosed off after doing the job. A guy from the Philippines eyes lit up when he saw the half tuber on the table. The taste was from his young childhood when the boys went bush and dug them up wild for a snack. He called it singkamas. In checking my spelling singkamas with Dr G: The Spanish word jícama came from xicamatl, the Nahuatl (Aztec) word for root vegetable. So spread in the Spanish colonies. See more
11.01.2022 We believe it is a Yacon - Peruvian ground apple. Is crunchy like an apple but tastes more like a pear. Currently we are growing for seed and tubers to plant. Let us know if you know more about it or how to cook it.
08.01.2022 Thanks to anon who dropped all the 100mm pots at the garden gate.
07.01.2022 Will have some raw Jicama to try at the Gordonvale Markets. Can say it works in a stir fry, a fruit salad and a tropical smoothy. Been told it bakes well. As for plants ... only the seeds will tell in time
06.01.2022 Plants doing well at present
