21.01.2022 CHEAPER IN CLINIC CONSULTS In case you haven't seen our facilities at the Livestock and Equine Centre in Leongatha here's a few snaps to show them off. Bringing your horse in for appointments when possible not only provides access to a full range of diagnostic equipment (xray, endoscope, ultrasound) and handling facilities (crush, yards for fasting, flat surface and roundyard for lameness examination) but is also cheaper! Next time your horse is due for a vet visit save yourself at least $50 by bringing them in to our Leongatha clinic. To make an appointment please call 03 5662 2251 ext 2.

18.01.2022 A PRICKLY PROBLEM Last week, we had a mare present to us with a swollen front leg (fetlock area). She was fairly lame at the walk but no other abnormalities seen. The limb was bandaged, the mare was started on pain relief and antibiotics. The bandage was changed a few days later - the leg swelling was markedly reduced, however, the fetlock joint was still swollen. A joint fluid sample was obtained which revealed severe joint infection/inflammation.... Septic joints are considered an emergency in horses, so Sammy and Tom performed a standing fetlock joint flush under local anaesthetic. Antibiotics were injected into the joint and a bandage was replaced on the limb. Three days later, the bandage was changed. When the bandage was removed, a thorn was found to be poking out the back of the fetlock. The joint was reflushed at this point. Two days after the thorn was removed, the fetlock swelling had markedly reduced and the joint fluid is getting back to normal! Antibiotics and anti-inflammatories will be continued for another couple of weeks. Fingers crossed for this lucky mare!
