23.01.2022 We're sending special Birthday wishes to Tongala Football-Netball Club and GVL legend Bob Dawson who is 100 years young today! For those that don't know, Tongala were part of the (as it was then known) GVFL from 1924 - 1933 and again in 1940 - 2005.... Bob, who was born in Elmore, started playing football in 1937 aged 16, for Elmore. From there Bob played with Rochester in the Bendigo League in 1939. He was recruited to St Kilda in 1940 where he played 3 senior games in one season. His football career came to a halt when he joined the Australian Army after war broke out in the Pacific. During the war, Bob served in transportation and was involved in active service, fighting against the Japanese. After the war, as coach of Elmore, Bob won the Michelsen Medal in the Bendigo League in 1946. This was the only year that Elmore fielded a team in this competition. In 1947, Bob was still coach at Elmore when it re-joined the Echuca League. That year, he was runner up in the leagues Cook Medal and won it the following year in 1948. Bob was recruited to Tongala as coach in 1949. That year, Tongala won the premiership over Kyabram. In 1950, Bob won the Morrison Medal in the GVFL. He played the next 9 seasons at Tongala before hanging up his playing boots. After retiring as a player, Bob played an integral role in establishing the thirds competition in the GVFL. Bob went on to coach Tongala’s Under 18 side for 18 seasons. The GVL's Under 18 Premiership Cup is named the Bob Dawson Trophy. This recognition is well deserved by Bob. On behalf of everyone across the GVL, we would like to wish Bob a fantastic 100th Birthday. We hope you have an amazing day with your family and friends.

20.01.2022 The GVL's B Reserve Best and Fairest Medal is named in honor of Gaye Eaton. Gaye showed that a true netball champion had arrived when she moved to Tatura in 1989 and joined the Tatura Football Netball Club. Gaye became the playing coach of Tatura and gave her all to the sport she loved as a player, coach and administrator. Her record is amazing in the GV, she won 4 Wellman Medals as Best Player in the League and was runner up twice. ... Eleven times she won the Tatura A Grade Best player award and was runner up once. She was a member of 5 Tatura A Grade Netball premierships as either Captain or Captain/Coach. Gaye loved representing her Association, she has been a country week representative for Shepparton, Seymour, Wodonga, and Goulburn Valley (including captain of the GV A Reserve winning team in 1992). She also coached the GV Netball League team in 1994 and was in the GVL World Masters representative bronze medal winning team in 2002. In total Gaye played 338 games of GVL Netball. From 1993 to ’97 Gaye was the Senior Vice President of the GV Netball Association and President from 2000 2006. She was responsible for the introduction of the B Reserve Grade in 2003. It is fitting that the Best Player award for B Reserve is called the Gaye Eaton medal. She became a qualified Life Member of GV Netball on playing her 200th game in 1998. Gaye was honoured with Life Membership of the GVFNL in 2007 and in 2018 was the first netballer to be inducted into the GVL Hall of Fame. #GVLNetball #GayeEatonMedal

19.01.2022 As NAIDOC week celebrations continue, we look to Indigenous players who are in the GVL's Hall of Fame. Debbie Atkinson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019. Debbie, a triple Wellman Medallist was the first player to win 3 best player awards. Debbie Atkinson became a sensation when she burst onto the scene as a Shepparton Swans player in the second year of the competition in 1984. Debbie had played junior netball in the Shepparton competition. ... The Swans were well aware of her talent and recruited her to play in the GV competition. Debbie was just what the Swans needed as she showed her talents in attack as a goal shooter and helped to put winning scores on the board for the Red and White colours. From her first game the umpires were very impressed with Debbie’s performance. She amassed 39 votes to win the Wellman Family Medal as best player in the League. It was a triumph for the Swans and she also won the Swans best player award, a preview of what was to follow. However, Debbie chose to play with her friends at Ardmona Football Netball Club Ardmona the next year, where she won the Kyabram District Football Netball League Netball medal. She returned to the Swans and won her second Swans best player award and her second Wellman Medal. 1978 saw Debbie playing and coaching Wunghnu in the Picola League. Debbie was chosen in the Australian Indigenous team to play in an International Competition in the Cook Islands. She returned for a third season with the Swans in 1988 where once again she was successful in winning her third Wellman Medal whilst helping the Swans team to become runner up in A Grade. She won the Swans best player award again. Debbie was also selected in the GVL All Stars team voted by all clubs. She spent her final season with the Swans in a wonderful culmination of her 78 games in red and white celebrating the A Grade premiership. Debbie was inducted into the Swan’s Hall of Fame in 2013. #NAIDOCWeek2020 #GVLHallofFame

09.01.2022 Some time ago, Great Yarmouth High School Old Girls Association in the UK, posted a photo of netball rules, that has been widely shared. They have since clarified that they were intended to be tongue-in-cheek. "It has been pointed out to us that people are taking this ‘tongue in cheek’ version of the netball rules seriously," they wrote.... "The 1946-47 netball team would be furious! Please may we confirm that this was not how netball was played during those years." Regardless, it provided a good giggle to us so we thought we'd share! Let us know what you think #GVLNetball
