25.01.2022 Regarding the closures at Tiger Wall at Dyurrite/Arapiles announced on Thursday, GWRN has since received an email from Barengi Gadjin Land Council (BGLC) asking us to share this message through our networks: "Naturally, the closure under the Set-Aside mechanism of such a large area will be cause for concern for many climbers, and the underlying message we would like to convey is that we intend to undertake the assessments as quickly as possible with the view to potentially reintroducing climbing in locations that don’t conflict with site protection."

25.01.2022 We really appreciate this clear and informative fact sheet.

25.01.2022 GWRN encourages all Australians to consider the meaning of January 26th to First Nations People. This week National Indigenous Television (NITV) and SBS invite communities to deepen their understanding of January 26 and what it means to be Australian through the upcoming programming slate, Always Was, Always Will Be. Dedicated programs, special events, premieres and news highlights will air across both NITV and SBS from January 19-26 with a focus on encouraging greater unders...tanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. https://www.sbs.com.au//nitv-and-sbs-invite-australia-to-c See more

23.01.2022 It is a privilege to be able to bring together these honest messages in the spirit of reconciliation. Thanks to the members of the climbing community for getting involved in this project. 22.01.2022 The insightful and reflective discussion in this episode of "The Point" on how colonial perspectives shape our identities as settlers on Aboriginal land provides food for thought about how we, living in this settler-colonial society, create our sense of who we are and how we move in the world. The section on Australian identity is 15.40-35.20, but we'd recommend watching the whole episode, which also contains a discussion of the importance of cultural burning practices and t...he impact of the recent bushfires on aboriginal peoples, and reflections on the 250th year of James Cook's landing on the East Coast. https://www.sbs.com.au//the-point-aussie-aussie-aussie-who #NRW2020 #InThisTogether2020

22.01.2022 An understanding of our history is a foundation for moving towards reconciliation, but local histories in Australia tend to deal primarily with the history of Europeans. However, Benjamin Wilkie’s new history of Gariwerd is a good starting point for those wanting a wider understanding of the story of Gariwerd. It's not a long book, but well covers Aboriginal culture and land use prior to the dispossession by Europeans. He also covers the politics around the restoration of ori...ginal names, which may be unfamiliar to many. The book finishes in the Colonial Legacies chapter with a discussion of Native Title and moves to return Gariwerd to its Traditional Owners. Sadly it concludes that prior history suggests that this will not come easily. This is a slim book covering a lot of ground. As such, it is very much an introductory text and worthwhile as such. Those wanting to extend their knowledge further should find the bibliography helpful. 18.01.2022 In this article from Rock and Ice magazine, American rock climber Kai Lightner gives a thought-provoking and insightful personal perspective on systemic racism and some of the difficulties he has experienced. Kai talks about the self preservation strategies which are required learning from a young age, and he discusses the importance of acknowledging the issues, but stresses action needs to follow that acknowledgement. Once you know better, it’s your responsibility to do better https://rockandice.com//kai-lightner-open-your-eyes-to-t/

17.01.2022 We recently did an interview with Vertical Life about our work with the Traditional Owners of Gariwerd around Taipan Wall and Bundaleer, read it here: https://www.verticallifemag.com.au//gwrn-and-the-closure-/

15.01.2022 We are reflecting on the important messages released in BGLC's Statement of Position. We wanted to make an early comment on the invitation that GWRN has received from BGLC to be involved in recreational use assessments at Dyurrite. We understand these to be of a similar nature to those we conducted in Gariwerd. We are taking time to think through our role in the pathway that BGLC has offered and will update when we can. www.bglc.com.au/media

13.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who responded to our last piece of communication and expressed their support for GWRN being involved in Recreational Use Assessments at Dyurrite. We were pleased with the level of support we received and have accepted the invitation from Barengi Gadjin Land Council (BGLC) to be involved. Here is a full update from us: https://gwrn.org.au//dyurrite-recreational-use-assessment/

10.01.2022 In the past week, we've linked resources to the meaning of reconciliation, and ones that discuss skills and knowledge that support a reconciliation journey. Even with these starting points, it can feel hard to know what to do to support reconciliation actively and in concrete ways. This note by Frank Hytten, accompanied by a table of actions by Clare Land provides some guidance and ideas for what can be done as an individual or collectively, and suggestions for personal and p...olitical actions to create safer spaces for Aboriginal peoples. http://decolonizingsolidarity.org//22/what-can-i-do-36-id/ More detail can be found in Clare Land's fantastic book about learning how to be better allies to Aboriginal people, "Decolonising Solidarity". http://decolonizingsolidarity.org/book/ #NRW2020 #InThisTogether2020

10.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC Week! This is a week for us to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme is Always was, always will be: a great reminder of whose land we are on and of the peoples, culture and history we can do more to learn about every day of the year, and in this week especially. You can find more information about this year's theme on the NAIDOC website. https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/2020-the...me Anyone can get involved in celebrating and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Something simple to do is following and supporting artists and Indigenous-owned businesses like Rachel Sarra (@sar.ra_), Aretha Brown (@_enterthedragon), Jenna Lee (@jenna.mlee), Mackenzie Lee (@birripba), Magabala Books (@magabalabooks), and Blak Business (@blakbusiness). If you’d like to venture out into the sunshine this week, the NAIDOC week website contains a list of events. https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/naidoc-week-events You can also get involved from the comfort of your own home: SBS NITV has curated movies and documentaries for every night of this week. https://www.sbs.com.au//always-was-always-will-be-your-nai We hope you find something in the list above to be inspired by and learn from.

09.01.2022 Great set of resources to begin your own personal reconciliation journey.

09.01.2022 Learning about the land that you are on is a crucial part of moving forward together in reconciliation. This resource about Gunditjmara land and the Gunditjmara journey for land justice is essential reading for anyone interested in land issues in Gariwerd. https://aiatsis.gov.au//weir-2009-gunditjmara-land-justice #NRW2020 #InThisTogether2020

09.01.2022 Statement from Gariwerd Traditional Owners about Cultural Heritage protection at Taipan Wall and Bundaleer.

08.01.2022 We are keen to share this short video from GMATOC, which reflects on the last stages of a long and sustained 17 year effort of the Gunditjmara to get the Budj Bim Landscape recognised for UNESCO World Heritage - the first successful application by a community group. We're incredibly lucky to be listening and learning from Gunditjmara Traditional Owners. This is a great insight into the passion and effort it takes to realise protection and recognition of Cultural Heritage Values. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtPOzOWa4Xs

07.01.2022 Some of our members watched the premiere of this film at the Melbourne International Film Festival. We think it's well worth watching. "Looky Looky Here Comes Cooky" will screen on NITV and SBS Viceland this Thusrday night at 8.30PM. https://www.sbs.com.au//new-documentary-examines-captain-c

06.01.2022 The new Deadly and Proud campaign encourages us to learn about and find pride in Aboriginal cultures, resilience and history. In their very accessible website, we can learn more about our true history in the lead up to treaty legislation being tabled in the Victorian parliament. A particularly moving story on the site is that of the Warrigal Creek massacre - it helped us to see how colonisation was experienced by the people being colonised. We'd highly encourage you to have a... look. https://deadlyandproud.vic.gov.au

01.01.2022 GWRN is pleased to hear of the Minister's decision to put in place interim protections for Dyurrite 1, reflecting the value and importance of this site to Traditional Owners - a first under the Victorian legislation. We look forward to working with Barengi Gadjin Land Council and community groups to realise this rare opportunity to listen, learn and protect this incredible reveal for current and future generations. We remind users of Dyurrite/Arapiles to be mindful of all signage in the area, as a temporary exclusion zone has been established around the larger Taylor's rock/Declaration crag area. We understand this will be in place until a longer-term management approach is determined with Traditional Owners." https://www.aboriginalvictoria.vic.gov.au/interim-protectio
