24.01.2022 Sunshine Coast Gliding President Trevor recently displayed his self-launching DG-400 glider as part of an aero club fly-in at Gympie airfield, then decided the day was too nice to waste so off he went to the north. Turning towards home Trevor noticed a line of convergence and decided to see how far he could glide without circling. He went 105km cruising between 5500' and 6500' for just over an hour! Crickey!
22.01.2022 The first flight today was an enjoyable one for me, as I was accompanied by an impressive young fellow (14 years old) named Flynn. He is undertaking powered flying training but jumped at the chance for a glider flight. We had a great one-hour flight in the K21 and Flynn displayed a nice touch on the controls!
17.01.2022 It’s hot! Temps nudging 40C and cloudless skies dominated the week. Despite the tough conditions several club members got airborne last Wednesday in a mix of two-seat training aircraft and a privately owned single-seat glider. One of our training gliders, the IS-30, rode a thermal to above 7000 feet! Hope it was cooler up there!
17.01.2022 Gliding friends are probably aware that the 10th Women's World Gliding Championship has been running at Lake Keepit NSW for the past week or so, and conclude tomorrow. Our Australian ladies have done very well on the very challenging tasks. (more on that later). After battling extreme heat and dust all week today's flying was canceled due to nearby storms and lightning!
13.01.2022 Our President Trevor has been making some very interesting flights lately, completing long loops way out to the west in his DG-400, as far as the Bunya Mountains and beyond. Here are a couple of pics from a recent flight with some challenging weather moving in. The countryside around our airfield looks great after the rain this month!
10.01.2022 The hot conditions and patchy thermals made for challenging flying today. Nonetheless, several flights of 1-2 hours were logged. Did I mention it was hot?? My face looked like Barnaby Joyce's by the end of the day!
08.01.2022 Quck clip of one of the aerotow launches at Sunshine Coast Gliding yesterday. The winds were challenging, 12 knots gusting to 20 with a bit of crosswind to make it interesting!
06.01.2022 Here are a couple more photos from the recent very successful visit by senior students in the aviation studies program at Noosa District State High School. Looks like the Council needs to get the airfield mowed!
04.01.2022 Today our club hosted a visit by around 30 senior students in the aviation studies program at Noosa District High School. We demonstrated both winch launching, along with our new simulation suite. Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take any students up for a flight but we strongly encouraged a return visit out of uniform to try a flight. It was a terrific day, with lots of interest from the students and staff.
04.01.2022 Club President Trevor had a terrific long flight in his DG400 glider last Thursday, from Gympie to Kingaroy and home via Biggenden. Nice work Trev! Here's is his account of the flight: On Thursday last week, the sky looked good enough to try flying to Kingaroy and back. I launched at 12.45 and had a pretty good run to Kingaroy with only a couple of 'holes' along the way. I was at 7900 feet as I turned at Kingaroy, and decided to take a detour to on the way home. I was at good height over Biggenden but there weren't any thermals after the last one that got me home. I landed at 4.15pm covering 320km at 91kph overall.
04.01.2022 Wishing all our friends a safe and uplifting (get it?) Christmas! Enjoy this time with your loved ones and be careful if you are on the road or affected by the fires. We are flying again on Saturday 4th January 2020!
03.01.2022 Wow! It seems this is the week for amazing gliding achievements. It'll be hard to top this one by club member Milan, who flew an extraordinary 875 kms last weekend, launching from Kingaroy in his LS-8 glider. Congratulations Milan! He was airborne for more than 8 hours! Here is an account of the epic flight in Milan's own words: "I launched shortly after 10am while the conditions were still soft but quickly improving. I left Kingaroy at about 12,000ft on a declared task to f...ly to Rolleston (West of Rockhampton) and then back to Kingaroy, an 800km roundtrip. It took me long 4h and 20min to reach the turn point over Rolleston Airfield. The smoke and fires that I encountered on the way north expanded significantly so a detour northeast was required. However, two large storms developing put a squeeze on my options. At around 5pm I finished what I thought was my last climb of the day with about 180km to Kingaroy. The clouds ahead didn't look good and it appeared that my flight was over. I kept stretching my glide in a hope of landing at Wondai (35km from Kingaroy) and getting an aerotow retrieve, daylight hours permitting. At around 5:50pm, just a few kilometres short of Wondai, I've noticed a large area of farmland fully lit by the sun. I ventured there to discover soft lift in the area so I dumped my water and started a climb. It turned out to be the best climb of the day at 9kts to 14,000ft. From there on it was easy sailing so I added an extra turn point at Nanango to burn the extra height. I eventually landed back at Kingaroy at 6:17pm, only 15min before sunset."
03.01.2022 Our first club flying day is this Saturday 4th January. Come and fly!
02.01.2022 Our club is now equipped with a dedicated glider simulator similar to the one used by the US and Brazilian airforces. Members and aspiring glider pilots will greatly benefit from this new and powerful learning tool by getting more ‘stick time’ while following a very comprehensive set of lessons/building blocks under our instructors' supervision. It's brilliant! The simulation suite was very generously donated to the club by Philippe Lamarque. Thank you so much, Philippe!
